Fort Polk in Louisiana is the home of the US Army’s Training Centre.
It takes 300 days to plan an exercise because of the scale and complexity of what happens during training.
Forces News reporter Sian Grzeszczyk was given exclusive access to find out why it is so important.
Report by @SianGrz and @FTVHan.

Ha. He comes in a Blackhawk helicopter, goes to some meetings where they installation command and leaders butter him up, show him parts of the operation that seem relevant, gives him a “VIP visitor’s” field kit to wear to take a tour of the field training exercise in which everyone is notified and are acting in their most professional and best behavior. Then he gives out some awards and military coins to some “well deserved” people. Then a final schmooz with the top leaders and he flies to the next base to do the same or back to Washington DC. It’s just a dog and pony show. He doesn’t spend a night out in the box. He’s either in a nice hotel or one of the VIP guest houses in the installation. The days of him getting dirty with the troops ended 4-5 ranks ago.

Met some UK troops in Southern California at a party hosted by a friend after they'd finished joint operations training. They took a fancy to my restored 1965 GMC pickup truck. They wanted a ride in a real classic American truck. They piled in the back of the truck, I put 2 more in the cab and we all headed down some back roads to a local beach. They were drunk as Lords and we all had a marvelous time. I got us all back to party in fine shape and their C.O. pulled me aside. "You Americans seem to take your country for granted. You criticize everything about it. America is a great country. You ought to realize how much depends on that." That's something only a friend will tell you.

I don't usually comment on n interviews, but this was a good interview, I was interested to hear what he thought about working with our amazing and hardworking British Soldiers, and the fact he actually spoke the truth about the Brits having particular capabilities that they either don't or having to tye degree or trained to do so to the level of the Brits, in my opinion smaller means more specialist units or just more units with high level skill and capabilities that are usually reserved for either tier 2 and even tier 1 Special Forces, because we have to do more with less making our personnel the highest trained of any military anywhere in the world. The UK are the friend everyone wants. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🇺🇲🇦🇺🇨🇦🇳🇿-🇪🇺

All I remember was my fathers generation loved and spoke highly of the Aussies that fought in Vietnam with them. Said they fought as hard as them, was as crazy as them and had balls like them. Never a negative thing said. That sticks in your head so if there's ever a ww3 and you find some detached Aussies roaming around snatch em up get em some food and water they'll do ya good. But yes it's imperative that you train with the UK hell a lot of us still have relatives over there. I thought back a few years back we was going over to slap the EU around a bit for stalling on releasing the UK after the vote. It wouldn't take much to sell that to the public for a just war............that'd be a easy sell. I was thinking this may get hairy real quick, the public would jump all over that.

This is done whenever any foreign military train on an American base in order to ensure US personnel render proper respect. Each foreign military member is given a badge of their equivalent US rank. Case in point, I once saluted a Saudi sergeant because his badge of rank was 3 stars.

@thomasdemay9805

The whole United Kingdom is a part of NATO so that automatically makes the Welsh part of NATO. The difference between NATO and the UN is significant. The UN is a political body made up of most of the worlds nations and is designed to settle disputes between these nations diplomatically and avoid military action and wars. The UN contains countries that hate each other or are even at war with each other and the UN tries to mediate between countries like this. The UN doesn't have an army it has "peacekeeping" troops (wear the blue UN helmets) who are more like a police / military hybrid and while useful in certain scenarios or conflicts they pose no threat to any significantly powerful nation. NATO on the other hand is a military alliance not a political body. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was designed after WW2 and made allies of the "free democracies" in Western Europe. The main goal of NATO was to protect West Europe from potential Soviet invasion although the allied countries can help each other in other areas of the world as well if necessary. NATO was a "mutual defense treaty" between nations like the USA, Canada, the UK, France, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Iceland etc that if any one of them was attacked by the Soviets all would join together to defend that nation. This is one of the main things that encouraged these nations militaries to collaborate together and train together. The alliance grew over time. Turkey was added very early on for strategic reasons. Turkey has always been rivals with Russia going back to the Crimean War and WW1. After time passed and West Germany was de-Nazified and rebuilt it's Army eventually it was allowed to join NATO as well. After the Cold War ended and the Soviet Union broke up NATO expanded in size and scope of alliance. The USA had originally promised the Soviets if that if they broke up they wouldn't add any ex-Soviet nations to NATO (which would basically be taking advantage of the situation to hurt Russia) however NATO did not keep this promise. It's hard to blame USA or NATO as it was just smart geo-politics to take advantage of the situation and it was also "the right thing to do" as far as some of these nations did need protection to remain free. These are nations like Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Poland etc. In the modern world NATO continues to grow but is somewhat threatened by the rise of the European Union which is developing it's own shared military infrastructure between member nations. The EU is kind of a mix of the UN (a political body) and NATO (only for allies who will defend each other especially against Russia in either a small scale conflict or a World War 3 type scenario). The process of developing the EU Army / Navy is ongoing and it remains to see exactly how far this goes over time. It does have the potential to eventually make NATO redundant as the majority of NATO members are also members of the EU. However the backbone of NATO is still the USA and UK who are the two strongest nations and very close allies. Meanwhile the backbone of the EU is Germany and France, specifically Germany who wields the most economic and political power. Brexit somewhat alleviated this as the UK alone isn't powerful enough to really leverage itself against France and Germany in the EU but as a NATO member it's "special friendship" with the USA and it's connections to Canada give it a much stronger position. For this cause conservatives in the USA are also looking to add other non European nations as well. For instance Trump mentioned Brazil several times as a possible future member. This would mean if the EU developed it's army and navy while it would be a very powerful member it wouldn't just be basically USA+EU but instead USA+EU+UK+Canada+Brazil etc. Another interesting nation is Turkey who is NATO but not in the EU. It is often talked about as a possible future EU member but it's interest dont really align with either Continental Europe or the USA/UK/Canada. It has concern over Russia but is much more friendly with them and even buys some of their military equipment now. The government is become much less secular and much more Islamic. It often finds itself on the opposite side of conflicts in the Middle East as USA and UK do. For instance Turkey was criticized for intervention and attacking certain groups in Syria who were fighting against Assad. Turkey is a natural rival with Saudi Arabia especially in Islamic context which is the direction Turkey is headed. Remember the incident with Saudi and the Turkish Journalist which was used to try to damage the USA / Saudi Alliance. Turkey is less threatened by Iran the the rest of the region and is much less friendly to Israel (another USA ally) than Saudi, Egypt, Jordan etc are. Despite all this Turkey still has significance because it will always control the straights (Dardanelles, Bosporus) which connect the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea and is one of the greatest strategic choke points in Naval history. This is significant for all of Southeast Europe but specifically against Russia. For this NATO is hesitant to cut ties with Turkey and it offers great potential benefit to the EU (as well as Economic benefits). The EU also has tons of new Muslim refugees from Syria who passed through Turkey to get there are are very supportive of Turkey and will be a "grassroot" voice in support of Turkey's goals and political positions from with the EU.
