Why did you call Joel Seedman White? He's clearly Jewish. Seedman is a joke, and us Jewish folks need to own this one instead of passing the buck on to White folks! 😅
How about doing an unstable exercise after one of the staples? I was trained by a guy who trains gold medal Olympians (this was 20 years ago). He swore by this method. Eg. Chest press superset by pushups on a bosu or Swiss/therapy ball. Front squat or back squat superset with bodyweight squats on bosu ball or Swiss ball?
The most annoying thing about Seedman is that apparently 80% of the time, he trains people with the standard stuff even though his Instagram reel is only the useless stuff. Dude is just a boring clickbaiter.
I was going to comment, but you beat me to it. Seedman's 80/20 principle: do standard lifts 80 percent of the time, complex lifts 20% of the time. Basically, grow and get stronger from the 80% and do the 20% for ... reasons.
I find it annoying that he uses such jargon, which is fine for some audiences, that will reach mostly casual viewers. They may not understand some of it and just assume that it is totally correct!
Doing my eccentric isometric hip hinged banded explosive box squat jumps with the earthquake bar and super setting with isolateral dual kettlebell static swings while watching this video.
The worst part about that neck ball nonsense is that athlete is Chris Carson, an incredibly tough running back for Seattle Seahawks, who unfortunately had to retire prematurely because of *checks notes* a NECK INJURY. I'd call that poetic justice if I didn't feel so bad for Mr. Carson who was indeed a tough football player. Can't make this stuff up.
@DarthNoshitam that is not at all what that means. Doing random things, without a clue, leads to gains but zero understanding why. The degree and knowledge rules out the b.s over time.
I'm shocked you aren't also calling him out on not even doing 90 degrees on any of his squats. He's doing like 45 degrees because he's not strong enough to do those weights at all.
I left a comment saying this exactly to Joel and he responded by saying that his knees did in fact hit 90° because he was leaning more forward at the ankles... I was shooketh 🤣🤣
Half squats and quarter squats are better for explosiveness when it comes to athletic population. There's a study on this by Rhea et. al. called 'Joint-Angle Specific Strength Adaptations Influence Improvements in Power in Highly Trained Athletes '. Pretty sure partial roms for squats also improve full squat max. Point is half and quarter squats simulate the starting position in sprinting and jumping. Tell me a sport where you develope power from full squat position.
@TheJimLahey combat sports. Football. Basketball. Rugby. Soccer (goalies). Baseball (multiple positions). I could go on, but what sports have you engaged in?
@@valspals9188 none of those go under 90 degrees except maybe combat sports. what are you talking about? Especially a goalie. Ever seen a goalia in full squat position? Rugby players sprint and their starting position is closer to half squat. I feel like you don't understand what a full squat position is if you think soccer goalies engage in it.
"eccentric isometrics" had me rolling because I literally looked up a chart of these terms when I started to take lifting seriously and EVEN I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
I've seen a few clips of his and I legitimately thought it was just trolling. I never in my life thought it was something he portrayed as genuine advice. I'm shocked it is, and glad Dr. Mike is tearing him apart 😂
In my personal opinion, this is the funniest video you have done that I have seen. I also love the full transparency, too many fitness professionals acting like they never make mistakes. Good Stuff as per usual
Remember that time Joel openly admitted to Dr Mike that his nonsense is literally just to sell his material when 90+% of what he does and does with athletes are the basics? I do
Thanks, Dr. Mike for keeping it real!... I've been lifting for 30+ years and I'm disabled with a TBI and I'm partially paralyzed, but I keep lifting b/c I feel joy in doing such - and I fully agree with how you structure your form on any said workouts.
I though (and hoped) that this about the guy on Tiktok that is training for badminton tournament :D You should critique him also, it's quite similar to this :D
My first intro to Joel Seedman was a guy I worked with who claimed Joel was his personal traimer, but he also claimed he picked up four girls in one weekend by playing guitar on his porch and was best friends with Morgan Freeman AND was an executive chef at three restaurants while also being a full time student and gym weekday opener so... honesty never had a super close link in my brain.
Had a coworker who claimed Charlize Theron followed him on Tik Tok and slept with over 3 thousand girls in his life... he also said his special cologne makes girls literally wet around him (funny part is I saw him get shot down twice in a day when he tried asking out girls walking by). He also claimed certain supplements he takes melts away body fat and that's how he lost 30 pounds and didn't work out... oh ya, he's also a notorious liar that nearly everyone disliked and got himself fired....I found his lies entertaining cuz he was delusional af
At 7:41 you say he's lying but, technically, he isn't. Since an "eccentric isometric" is impossible, there's not a single person who tried it and doesn't swear by it.
Honestly having someone who’s instructed and has actual licenses that isn’t scared of being straight forward critiquing the bs around the gym industry is a blessing. When this series ends (hopefully in a long time) it will be missed. Thank you Dr Mike, and RP your contribution should be praised more
Mike talking about how not everyone likes RP, and that some people have actually gotten negative results from the program speaks volume to his integrity to me. Yes, not everything works for everyone, that's the real world. For him to actually say that goes a long way to demonstrate honesty, transparency and integrity and I am here for it.
These days it's very hard to find someone like Dr Mike that actually says what he really believes and doesn't do random shit that gets views. Thank you Dr Mike 🥰.
Thank God, you posted this video because I’ve been contemplating following this guy for a while, but found his workout so weird, I appreciate this video
9:00 That was the first clip I saw or heard of Joel. During lockdowns he said this was what could help “maintain” muscle mass. I genuinely thought he was a social media comedian at first
Why has it taken me this long to have discovered this channel?! Dr. Mike smart guy holds who holds no punches and the commentary is truthful and hilarious.
I figured out his following, and it's something I haven't seen any seedman critiques mention. He's very openly Christian and a surprising amount of the followers that defend his content reply with "thoughts and prayers!" or "thanks doing the lord's work, Joel" in the comments. Rather than being a lifting coach, he has set himself up as a lifting preacher - a religious lifting authority that's not to be questioned. You don't have to understand, because his techniques work in mysterious ways. P.S. The guy that he was hitting with a medball broke his neck on the field one week after that reel.
That's an interesting observation. Perhaps there is some element of conspirscy mindedness that's giving the whole "conventional wisdom and knowledge is wrong, I'm the ine with the real secret answers" implications of his content?
Holy shit thats hilarious. Makes sense cause hes from Georgia lol. The guy breaking his neck better have chargebacked the personal training payments 😂 thats just too good to be true.
I just want to mention how I had a huge patellar tendonopathy injury in my left knee. And lifting using full knee flexion [heels to ass] on the pendulum squat has not only healed my knees but they are now stronger than they have ever been. Full rom works! F**** stopping at 90
Reason why I know Dr Mike's channel is worth every minute I spent on his content? Beside vast knowledge and will to educate people, he is not afraid to say that no product yields 100% satisfaction or success rate even when talking about his own products.
Being a 4 year trainer / 7+ lifter and just completed my degree in exercise science, I can not understand why people are doing all this flashly stuff. It's freaking wild
I love the clips of seedman doing what i like to call the high-intensity tantrum exercise. Just flailing around with no weight looking like he's trying to hold back the world's heaviest nut. Amazing stuff.
I love these videos because they’re funny, but then Dr. Mike slips in actual useful information too. I get to laugh and learn. I’d love to see Dr. Mike and Dr. Layne Norton calling out people together.
Another hilarious commentary with truth behind the jokes!! I would love to talk shop with you sometime about your opinion on optimal exercises for Volleyball athletes specifically, with improving injury reduction, as well as force production in season.
As a PT I appreciate the roast. I had to take a break from IG because the feelings of inadequacy been feeling watching these fake ass bs fitfluencers, claiming they have the best and any therapist or training not doing their stuff sux. Anyways thanks for putting science behind their critiqued vids
You know what I love when under extremely heavy loads? Wobbling all over the place. I can't see how that could possibly go wrong but in fairness I did have my imagination surgically removed
Just once i lost focus on form during deadlift, thus making it a wobbly one, the next second i knew I F***D UP. Save my back or spare the floor? The game was on. TLDR: Back pain won
Also fun to know, his plates are not "correctly colorcoded" His greens are 10lbs, yellow 25lbs, blue 35lbs, red 45lbs So every lift seems more than it actually is (You can see the numbers on the plates in his videos)
Love how real Mike is. Totally no BS he is realistic about his own products in that they might not be for everyone. A great fitness role model and general role model too
Instability isn't _completely_ valueless for core stability, but his clients would be much better served by just adding some farmer's carries to their program of basic lifts.
Saying your own product isnt magic or for everyone because its the real world is g shit. that is the genuine attitude you love to see. Mike has definitely earned the respect he has.
I’ve been a personal trainer for 25 years now. I was blessed early on to learn and train with a trainer who had been training about 30 years at that time. One of the core beliefs I learned was to keep it simple. Every time I had ideas and practiced away from this system I actually saw less results. There are 6 basic movements the human body makes, just load those and make them stronger and move through a long range of motion. Simple= better I trained a hockey player who came to me and showed me all these balance/complicated exercises he was doing. I got him to stop and do the above. Not only did he look and feel better, but played and skated better too.
While this video is 10/10 entertaining, it's also helpful! There are so many trainers/influencers out there who are full of crap, and this helps teach you how to spot red flags 🚩🚩🚩
I haven't laughed as hard as I did at 5:20 in years. I inhaled my coffee and I've been choking on it for a solid few minutes. I don't even have words for how hilariously dumb that "exercise" was hahaha
There was a question at 14:45 - "why are you training instability", I could try to answer that, there are many throws in Judo that could require some strength while balancing on one leg, Dr.Mike should know that. No idea why is the dude training for it, but the exercise itself might have some use.. maybe.
Seedman is ridiculous, no question. However, the hex bar saved my back. I use as close to regular DL form as possible though. U also use it for deficit squats.
