I was 100% sure you were going to see this. Well Chris, I see no other option. It's time we cancel Dr. Mike (ha, get it? Cause there's other Dr. Mikes and he's upset about it).
@@SirEpsilonn we still use the consonant in spelling. The reason it's not pronounced is because the act of drinking tea and pronunciation both use the mouth.
@@charleswhitefullbusteruchi1972 he says 10 chin ups, 20 press ups and 10 dips. I didn't hear the chin ups initially as well. I thought he said sit ups.
10 pullups/chin-ups (strict form, not those kipping ones) = significant challenge for average males. 20 pushups = pretty doable for most adult males; compared to pullups, you are moving significantly less weight with bigger muscles. 10 dips (full depth w good form) = solid challenge for most guys. These standards are very uneven. I know plenty of men who can't do a single pull up. I hardly know any guy who can't do two pushups .
Child strength is different due to differing strength-to-weight ratios for various movements and body development through puberty. Even so, 10 strict pullups is still rare in elementary school . But anyway, Mike Thurston was specifically talking about adult men, and there is plentiful evidence based on large samples showing that doing ten good pullups is MUCH harder for most people than doing 20 good pushups. As an example, check out the Secret Service fitness test standards. For a 20-29yo male, doing 37 pushups in one minute would be graded as "very poor" and put you in the worst category in the test. On the flip side, doing just 11 pullups WITH NO TIME LIMIT AND BEING ALLOWED TO LET GO AS OFTEN AS NEEDED will put you in the highest category of "Excellent".
@@steven-furypull ups are easy ig you 30kg . Not so much if your 90kg+ . I can lat pull 95kg. ,, doing a single pull up as a 128kg is going to be nierly imposibe naturally . (Overdid a bulk 21%bdy fat. Going down to 115kg)
It seems to me that pushups vary a lot in difficulty by the strictness of technique, but can be counted as pushups even with "meh" technique so the numbers can be deceiving when that is not taken into account. You can double or triple the number you can do just by "cheats" like resting your body on the ground between each one, not keeping your pelvis high, "bouncing" up using your whole posterior chain as a spring, dropping down with a lack of control, etc etc.
@@steven-fury im glad you speak as a representative for all 4 billion men on the planet based on your own anecdotal evidence. im sure being humble is also listed as one of your strengths.
Now that AthleanX has started doing the same video format, maybe its a fun idea you critique Jeff? I mean I know there is some animosity against the guy but I honestly learned A LOT from the both of you. And whilse I am leaning more towards your teachings since the algorithm blessed me with you a couple of years ago, I actually do believe there is quite a bit of overlap between the things you two preach. It could be a fun time doing an episode on AthleanX/Jeff.
@vinceb557: I agree, Athlean X has some VERY valuable content that has proven to actually be effective when put into practice. I have been watching his content for at least ten years and have the utmost respect for his knowledge and experience.
Small correction. Dubai is not dry, it's actually pretty humid, which quite frankly makes it even hotter in the summer. 45 degrees with 50% humidity is no joke! I typically leave for several months in the summer....
@@mixalis6168 Well you can just look on a weather app, or just Google average humidity. Dubai is NOT dry, it's right next to a hot ocean. Right now today, 43 degrees, 57% humidity.
Before Mike turned into an 'influencer' he was actually a personal trainer, in my hometown. So his technique has always been very good, and he even competed when he was younger. That being said theres no doubt he's on ped's, no shame in that, but he does lie to his audience. Also he's gone down the route of selling lifestyle courses, to rich assholes who pay upwards of 20,000 dollars to go and stay and be on his course for a few days, again no judgement but the 'influencer' lifestyle is obviously a very affluent one if you can con people into buying your courses.
If he has taken PEDs he's done very well to remain consistent with years of travelling. I've followed him since the early days and it's hard to tell there really isn't any huge fluctuations in size. Genetically gifted or flying around with his prescribed trt who knows
@@markc2622 could say that about any influencer though. They all maintain year round. It's the kids I feel sorry for, all of their major influences come from roided up divvies selling a dream. Not surprised men's mental health and body dysmorphia are higher than ever (not to mention needle exchange traffic...)
He has always denied any PED`s. I`d have respect if he just stopped lying to his audience. In Dubai the arabs love muscular guys and the Police turn a blind eye to usage. I know i lived there for years.
@asktherightquestiontoday No you cannot. Have a look at all the bodybuilders in the natural category and you will see. These are some of the top level guys genetically. I don’t think he’s on loads just on enough to cruise after his usage over years.
Been waiting for this! I've recommended reviewing Mike Thurston workout vlogs months ago on RP Instagram. Glad you guys really reviewing his exercises! Thanks Dr Mike
I love your sense of humor. Whomever did the thumbnail, that's epic! Had to immediately click (not that I don't always anyway the minute I see new stuff from y'all). I guess I'm in that 1.5% of females you're always talking to.
I have been waiting for this... my two favourite fitness channels (plus the only two fitness gurus I have ever actually sought out their respective apps) finally collide.Let the knowledge begin!!
I've wanted to say this so many times but never got to a video early enough where anyone would see it. Also reminds me, I'm overdue for my quarterly rewatching of Pumping Iron
Just do something else for tri's, like overhead cable extensions for example, no point in going through pain, you'll just make it worse. Edit:. just saw the part were mikes talking about this, as an Australian this word is very common, so I thought you were just asking for realz.
I love Mike. He's a nice bloke and a pretty funny guy. Way better than 90% of the fitness influencer types. He has a mild Northern England accent. Most Americans when they think of British accents are probably thinking of Southern England posh accents (RP).
Can you do a video for trainers on how to train their clients with different stages of their lifting (beginner, intermediate and advanced) it'll be a big help
About the dips: it depends on how experienced you are and how strong your shoulders and chest are in the internally rotated positions. My first injury was from this and it took me long to realize that you not only need to train external rotation for posture but also internal rotation for shoulder protection on pushing movements. I had to start over with lighter weight or support to learn to train in that deep of a stretch. It feels so good once you can stretch that far down.
I'm from the UK, nobody says "spangling", not in that context at least. Getting "spangled" is when you get drunk or high. "Mate, I was absolutely spangled". Yes, we know, it's supposed to be a silly sounding word, that's the point. Spangled, in my use cases, is when I've had something "more than alcohol" and I've lost my mind a little bit...
Mike is from Leeds in the UK. Which is north England, Southampton is the south coast of England and sound nothing alike, lol! Mike has publicly had a hair transplant also (he did RU-vid video on it!) He seems a good guy, and has a dry humour!
Not doing the "Pulsing from the bottom" is a very good advice in general. A few years ago, I dislocated my shoulder, tore off my long biceps tendon and damaged the humeral head, just because of explosive strength when doing a downward lat pull with a little too much weight for my own good. The snapping sound is something you never forget.
It seems like you’re making the opposite point Dr Mike was. He said that “pulsitile” force from the bottom increased the risk of injury. His advice was gradual acceleration.
@@nickgodfrey1148 It was a chest expander with supposedly ~75kg strength, so roughly about my body weight when fully expanded, nothing too fancy, unless you are as stupid as me. :) I now have 6 carbon anchors in my shoulder for life and the surgeon who put them in as well as my physical therapist afterwards were both surprised how I even managed to do this. I have mild kyphosis and hypermobility in the shoulders, so that probably contributed to it somehow. The best part is that they didn't even know the tendon was torn off before they cut me open because in the MRI they could only see the ligament being ripped off partially from the upper socket part. Anyway, it took about 2 months until I could remove the big shoulder orthosis which had to be on 24/7. Then it took another few months to restore some muscles and regain some movement and then another 2 years until I was somewhat pain free when doing normal every day movements. Naturally, I took it very easy with any weight exercises over the years, so after almost 10 years and I'm still not fully pain-free and have "trust" issues, but I'll keep on trying to regain full movability. :) tl;dr Be careful
Mike Thurston actually had a hair transplant (and I think some micro-pigmentation): he covered that in the past in a video vlog, and his insecurity about it! It was probably one of the most useful things he ever did, as it got a lot of attention at the time outside of fitness YT - because here was this nearly perfect looking dude who was dealing with this major insecurity alot of us deal with. He was essentially bringing awareness to it when alot of influencers were hiding it; so even in Mikes case, there is truth to the old adage that 'No One Is Perfect'! 👍
I love how the thumbnail changed from a bunch of hearts and Dr. Mike swooning over Mike Thurston to now just a normal thumbnail. Or Scott the Video Guy could be A/B testing different thumbnails and a different one popped up for me the second time it showed on my homepage lol.
What? I moved to Dubai because it was beneficial for me and my family. I was earning 230k a year in Miami but being taxed my ass off and I'm earning 215k in Dubai and pay no tax. My daughter goes to a great private school and is safe and cost if living is great here. I get more value for my money here. Dubai is what you make it, it's a blank canvas. There are a lot of misconceptions about Dubai and the UAE.
Some good fitness stuff, but recommending listening to Mike 'Thick as Mince' Thurston on any other topic is like recommending you step in shit every time you see some on the sidewalk. The world has surely had enough of 'influencers' chewing on Andrew Tate's pole - if he actually has one.
In the UK we make up words and usually end them in "ing" to give a feel for what we mean. So spangling sounds sortve like 'spanner', so throwing a spanner in the works or 'spangling' is the sortve thing hes going for here (probably). This is a trend started by or atleast prominently promoted by Roald Dhal a mega famous childrens books writer from days gone by
I was thinking spangled also means messed up (as in drunk, e.g. i was absolutely spangled last night) so maybe it's more like you'll mess up your shoulder.
Spangled refers to stars twinkling, as in 'star spangled banner' referring to the American flag. So 'spangled' means being high or drunk to the point that you're seeing twinkling stars in your vision
2 things Mike 1: its not always cloudy in the UK (we occasionally have 1 or 2 consecutive sunny days) 2: Mike Thurston is from the North of England ( Leeds specifically) Note: Not all British (even English) people talk like londoners. We have regional dialects, just like in the US 😉
Exactly. He has little character and not a very good business brain or academics given him virtually failing his degree. RU-vid has been main source of money until his channel views die. Other than that were scamming clients with overpriced courses and looking for other scamming opportunities from social influencers
Thurston is a pretty real dude -- he documented how he was losing his hair and went through a hair transplant. That was a few years ago though; I dunno if he's still as real today
Niggle. From the viking influence. Norwegian nigla. Means "a slight annoyance". Could see why it could be confused, but in the UK I've never heard anyone double take it because it's almost always used in context.
The one thing that I find strange about Mike and a lot of the other so-called "influencers" in Dubai is that they are living in a country where mohmedism reigns accept for mindless tourists and mega-rich folks. All the rest of the people who do the actual work must follow sharia or if they are from any other country have no rights and are forced to follow sharia as they cannot afford to go to the bars or the pork pots (or the other places that Dr. Mike alluded to where mainly females from Eastern Europe "work". A place that might looks nice, but is even more of a place of hypocrisy then the USA or Europe. A place to be avoid in the winter as well as the summer.
another guy whos read about dubai in the newspaper and never been there.. probably from the US considering how badly educated you guys are internationally..
@@stephanottawa7890 I have been to dubai on multiple occasions. It's nothing like you are describing. So I am asking what the.... are you talking about?
