Today I will show you an exercise with which you can train the double tongue! 🎺
The double tongue is one of the advanced skills on our brass instruments. In order to master them well and fluently, we have to practice them separately. In this video I show you my exercise, with which you can start with tongue training. 💪
I divide the exercise into three steps:
1️⃣ In the first step we speak the syllables, that is, with the rhythm of an eighth note, two sixteenth notes and a final quarter: dü-dü-gü-dü. I repeat these syllables until my tongue has got used to the movement.
2️⃣ In the second step, I blow these syllables outwards without a voice but with a conscious stream of air. A small intermediate step that brings us closer to the instrument is blowing the air flow through the trumpet. To do this, take your mouthpiece loosely to your lips, you don't have to seal it completely, and blow the air flow through the mouthpiece.
3️⃣ In the third step we play the double reed on the instrument. Always pay attention to a loose approach and a round, soft tongue movement.
Start this exercise on a constant pitch. To get us moving, I use a small sequence of tones: g1-f sharp1-g1-a1-h1-c2-d2-c2-h1-a1-g1. Of course, you can always play this exercise higher or lower, paying attention to the accidentals.
Now I use a wide variety of rhythms and play them, of course with a double tongue, based on this sequence of notes. You can also speed up the pace at any time. How exactly, I'll show you in the video! 👍
