I get a lot of questions about how to improve your equitation when working with your horse, so I made this video with some of the equestrian tips and tricks that I use during my routine to improve my eq, as well as teaching my students. I hope you find these to be useful and you can put them to good work when schooling your horse and training to be a better equestrian. Thanks so much for watching!

Zoey Luna is a USEF Active Professional Trainer specializing in OTTB's (Off Track Thoroughbreds) based in Southern California. Zoey started her riding career over 10 years ago in Santa Barbara, California. Growing up competing in Equitation, Hunters, Medals, and Jumpers, she found her love for riding and training at a young age. From numerous wins in Equitation championships to more recent year end Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program High Points and Jumper Classic wins, Zoey has proven herself as a well rounded and accomplished trainer. ZL Equestrian was founded originally for specialization in Off The Track Thoroughbred retraining and sales, as Zoey's true love resided in the breed itself. The program has expanded to all breeds, with the same basic principle, a solid foundation for results that last. With the application of her prior dressage training, Zoey focuses on a reward versus reprimand based training system proven to build confidence in the production of young and/or green horses.

This is so helpful! Although I have jumping experience, I’ve never had a trainer work on MY position. My “position” over jumps was push hands forward and pray

One day could you please do a video about the different classes in the USA? Also the differences in the horses used for the different classes? Like what is the difference between a hunter, an equitation horse and an open jumper? As an Australian, the whole hunter and equitation over fences is a mystery.

I loved this! Could you please make little eq tutorials more into depth on individual techniques and what helped you develop strength doing those things? Like half seating the canter, sitting the canter, posting/sitting trot, ways of riding the canter and when to use them, and doing different exercises without stirrups? I’m so lost about what to even do with my body when I’m half seating and I can’t move fluidly and I just wind up flailing and I would really appreciate some guidance about the basics of how I move in half seat canter:)

I have to be honest, everything you do with your horses brings back so many great memories of when I had horses... Just keep being you and sharing :-)

Bounces are THE BEST for your position. I also had trainers make me drop my reins into the bounces and put my hands out in order to develop body independence from my hands. This will also teach you to keep your abs engaged in case something happens (refusal, chip, etc.).

Up-up-downs at the trot are also good for making sure you are balanced. What sort of phrases do you use (on yourself and students)? I love hearing these because everyone says things differently and visualization (or little pep talks) helps me a ton. (“If you can stop you can slow down.”) Also that hose nozzle

The video is amazing!! I wanted to ask you a question? When I approach the jump it's fine when I takeoff it's fine but when I land my bum goes almost behind the saddle even when my lower leg is in the correct place, why does that happen? Aren't I engaging my core enough, I'm totally clueless??

I always struggle with not folding enough and straightening up too soon over the jump. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to work on this? (Also worth noting, I only jump for fun, I'm a dressage rider so I haven't gotten jumping lessons, I've jumped up to 1m but it was a single fence)

I’m no professional, but the tips given to me were to press the neck until you feel the horse lane on the other side for straightening up too soon.

I like the bounce exercise. He’s very handsome. Riding style looks stiff backed, so I am thinking this is California?? Position; shoulders, hips, heels good, but where is your release? Your elbows are out and you hands never come off neck or withers. it looks like there is a lot air between elbow and body. Why the stiff straight arms, and hands down….Curious?

The only reason I clicked on this video is bc that hack sits so low on the nose It should be 2-3 fingers down from the cheekbone. Right now it sits on the fragile bone
