Replacing the complete exhaust system on a motorcycle like the Honda Deauville NT650V 2005 requires careful attention and proper tools. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:
Note: This guide assumes you have a replacement exhaust system that is compatible with your motorcycle model.
1. Gather the necessary tools and materials: You'll need a socket wrench or ratchet set, appropriate socket sizes (usually 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm), a torque wrench, penetrating oil, a rubber mallet or hammer, a jack or stand (if needed), and the new exhaust system.
2. Prepare your workspace: Ensure you have enough space to work on the motorcycle safely and comfortably. Park the bike on a flat surface and put it on a center stand or use a motorcycle lift or jack to elevate the rear wheel, if necessary.
3. Allow the exhaust system to cool: Make sure the exhaust system is cool to the touch to prevent burns or injuries.
4. Loosen the header pipe bolts: Locate the bolts that connect the header pipes to the cylinder head. Apply penetrating oil to the bolts if they are rusted or stuck. Use the appropriate socket and wrench to loosen and remove the bolts. Keep the bolts in a safe place as you will need them for the installation of the new exhaust system.
5. Disconnect any mounting brackets: Check for any mounting brackets or clamps that secure the exhaust system to the frame. Remove these brackets or clamps using the appropriate tools.
6. Remove the exhaust system: Gently wiggle and maneuver the old exhaust system to detach it from the motorcycle. It may be necessary to tap the exhaust pipes with a rubber mallet or hammer to loosen any connections. Be cautious not to damage any surrounding components or wiring during the removal process.
7. Install the new exhaust system: Take the new exhaust system and carefully align it with the mounting points on the motorcycle. Begin by sliding the header pipes onto the cylinder head and aligning them with the corresponding mounting holes. Insert and tighten the header pipe bolts using the torque wrench, following the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications.
8. Attach mounting brackets and clamps: Securely fasten any mounting brackets or clamps provided with the new exhaust system. Ensure they are positioned correctly and tightened to provide stability and prevent rattling.
9. Check the fit and alignment: Double-check the fitment and alignment of the new exhaust system. Ensure there is adequate clearance between the exhaust pipes and other components, including the frame, swingarm, and bodywork.
10. Reinstall any removed parts: If you had to remove any additional components, such as heat shields or covers, reinstall them securely.
11. Test for leaks: Start the motorcycle and let it idle for a few minutes. Listen carefully for any exhaust leaks, indicated by hissing or popping sounds. If you detect a leak, turn off the engine and inspect the connections. Adjust and tighten as needed to eliminate any leaks.
12. Finalize the installation: Once you're confident that the new exhaust system is securely installed and there are no leaks, you can lower the motorcycle from the stand or jack, if applicable.
Always refer to the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer of your new exhaust system and consult the motorcycle's service manual for any model-specific details or torque specifications. If you're unsure about any step or lack experience in motorcycle maintenance, it's advisable to seek assistance from a professional motorcycle mechanic.
A patchy video detailing how I managed to seal a leaking exhaust system. The head flange gaskets, the collector gaskets and GunGum to seal the joints.
Working perfectly now. No stray noises and goes like a rocket.
