This is 1 of 5 films that take you on a personal curator tour of our exhibition Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk.
Captured as the museum was closing its doors for a while, curator Anna Jackson guides you through the exhibition spaces, providing a personal insight into the making of the show, star exhibits and the fascinating history of the kimono. Sometimes perceived as traditional, timeless and unchanging, Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk counters this conception, presenting the garment as a dynamic and constantly evolving icon of fashion.
The exhibition reveals the sartorial, aesthetic and social significance of kimono from the 1660s to today, both in Japan and the rest of the world.
This film looks at: Kimono and early 20th-century western fashions | fascination for East Asia | new kimono designs in Japan | impact of chemical dyes | new department stores

Amazing history. The brighter, more commercial ones off the peg tho interesting I do feel something is lost there but it is all part of the rich story of Kimono.

I'm wondering if the popularity of kimono in the late 19th and early 20th century led to the popularity of a more cylindrical silhouette for European and North American women and then to the flapper silhouette...

Huh, that’s an interesting idea! In turn, I wonder if the rise of cylindrical sillouettes added to the popularity of kimonos, or even if they contributed to each other

Whomever designed the display at the 3:12 mark is a genius. Every Kimono is displayed to perfection with the hexagonal design and ceiling mirrors adding to the appreciation of every angle. Learning not only the history of Kimono in Japan but how they affected fashion design in the Western culture was simply amazing.

Ive been watching Downton Abbey clips on RU-vid and I've noticed Lady Mary wearing these beautiful kimonos as robes. I hadn't noticed that when I watched the series.

Fantastic examples and wish I could see them all in person. Thanks so much for making this video series. I'd love to see more too on weaving techniques of kimono fabrics, like patterns dyed before weaving, chiriminmata, etc.
