for a lot of groups, the focus changes based on mv or concept or if someone improves so much in dance or performing in a general to the point where they eventually are good enough to be the centre but bc kai is the main dancer he dances in the middle of the chorus usually the better dancers stay in the centre for the chorus for pretty much all groups, but another factor in the centre is stage presence, visuals, facial expression and popularity(which kai also has all of).
Most groups have official positions, Kai is center and he is so by merit & talent, his fancam show how immaculate every movement of his is executed. He’s a trained dancer and having him in the middle makes the dance look clean and cohesive. All of them are really good dancers though & I think EXO actually rotate their center quite often and everyone gets their spotlight, if you see almost every member gets a close shot on their face that actually lingers, it’s rare to see that in kpop. And if you watch dance practices you will see how EXO tend to incorporate different levels in their dancing so that the person singing at the moment is seen, like making a natural spotlight, they change position all the time. An example of this is both The eve & electric kiss.
I think the thing is with Kai being the 'centre' is because he's the main dancer. Don't quote me on this or whatever but with most groups, the main/lead dancers usually take the centre while the weaker dancers/ performers usually follow them on the sides (who still do a great job). Also, they put the member with lines in the centre too if theyre singing/rapping in the chorus, like Baekhyun taking the centre in the second chorus in Love Shot (and that he's one of the better, more powerful dancers). For other groups like BTS, Jungkook usually was the face of the group and the centre, with Jimin taking the lead in the chorus a few times, but they've grown and they prioritise putting almost all the members in the centre positions, especially V and Jin more now than ever than they did in the past. All in all, I think its just based on who's singing the chorus or who's the better dancer(s) of the group, they take the centre more often.
About the KAI thing you could definitly say he's the "Face of the Group" wich is actually a approved Kpop term...🤠 *still* he's not always gonna be the focus and not everything resolves around him. With every comeback theres gonna be members who fit the *concept* the best or play a certain role in the *storyline* and it mostly resolves around that. Since you're already so familar with KAI tho he will obviously always catch your eye first even if he's not the Main focus. Asoon as you get to know every Member more individually they will also stand out way more! Most Kpop Groups do have a role for visuals (wich is under alot of debate by kpop stans) who get the most screentime since they're so popular. But that's mostly just marketing. I personally don't think kpop groups take the "Beyoncé and C.o." vibe to an extreme...but alot of groups will always have certain members that have strong charisma or stage Presence wich will obviously be shown on camera. Since KAI is the Main Dancer/Performer and the "Face of the Group" it's pretty normal for him to get more focus in dance and beauty shots. And that's pretty much how most Groups operate when they have a strong Performer... since everybody has their role in the Group (like you might have seen in I-Land, everybody will shine in their own strengths) 📸 This turned into a paragraph but i hope it'll help you understand this more 💕💃🏽💖🙌

Since Kai is the best dancer in EXO so when there's a group dance, he's in the center. He's not always the center of EXO mv all the time. Baekhuyn has more air time in Monster
It’s in their concept (the overall story) Kai can transport and help his members travel along. He was the first one to come to earth (first introduced Exo). Every little detail (even the line up in stages) is linked to their mythology.

Kai holds the role of Centre for EXO. It is a position chosen by the company and is mostly related to being a main focus in performance but also relates to how they line up / pose. When you see them early on, Kai is Centre for EXO-K and Luhan was Centre for EXO-M. As such, they were placed in the centre (not exclusively as the vocalist often takes the role for their lines, and Luhan was not a Main Dancer) and even had something in their look to make them stand out. It must have been difficult for Luhan that, outside of China, Kai was generally more the focus when they were together as a unit of 12. You only have to see the amount of pre-debut teases Kai did so see how much he was focused on. Since then, he has been called one of the best Centres in Kpop because he holds attention so well, but also because he works so hard as a main dancer that he deserves to be in the centre of performances. Having said that, as a highly talented, mature group, EXO all take the role, yet even so, their actual Centre Kai takes the position most. When they line up as 8, the changes with members leaving means he no longer stands centrally, with 9 it is their leader Suho, but the position is still held by Kai.

People say exo dance choreos are really easy, all they have is vocals . But let me tell you, slower the choreo is harder it gets to execute . Same is case with Taemin's move and Exo (love shot, eve, artificial love....) See whole k-pop has covered love shot but no one at exo's level. Even no one did justice to park chanyeol's moves too(pcy considers himself weak at dance, but he is not)
Yes companies some times pick who they want to have as Centers in their comebacks and different eras, based on the concept. Sometimes it turns out well , sometimes it is favoritism yk

Since their debut, Kai has been the center and face of the group, he was the first member to be introduced (on Exo's debut teasers) and he was kinda in charge of presenting the rest of members on their teasers too, thus his stage name Kai which means open/start (his real name is Jongin) I guess SM or maybe they all together decided their positions when the members were chosen to debut. Kai was the face of EXO-K and former member Luhan was the face of EXO-M (all the members debuted with positions) Nevertheless that doesn't mean everything revolves around Kai on their MVs, but due to his position he usually takes the center positions on their choruses
If I have to guess, I think SM chose him because of his strong stage presence (and artistry) You have seen how even on their debut mv and on early mvs he has always had this strong stage presence, he has always been like that. And the members too, take pride of having Kai as center and face of the group 🤍
As with most of EXO's songs and MVs -- Such as "Love Shot" -- the song and the story in the MV are two separate things. There are two messages that the story tells in the MV. Yes, the story in the MV is loosely based on the lyrics of the song, but the main point of the MV is mostly to tell another part of EXO's story. Part of EXO's mission is they are constantly fighting against and battling the Red Force for control. The Red Force is thought to be here on Earth inflicting their evil agenda and corrupting humanity and causing all the bad things that are happening in the world such as war, hate and destruction of the environment, etc. While on their quest to locate and protect the Tree of Life, EXO is also tasked with trying to fix everything the Red Force has caused. And because EXO is trying to undo and prevent the Red Force from accomplishing their goals, the Red Force is also trying to take down EXO by capturing them, corrupting them and standing in their way, etc. There are 8 members in "Love Shot." EXO's Chinese member, Lay, was not able to participate in this MV. In "Love Shot" I'm not sure why they first ended up at the gas/service station or the cinema/movie theater, but the story in this MV is all about how the Red Force is trying to corrupt and control them. For example, supposedly, most fans agree, that Xiumin may have been captured by the Red Force -- or maybe it's his X-EXO clone. If you notice, Xiumin is squaring off with a group of guys with guns, but a few seconds later we see someone with a mask and when the mask is removed you see that it's Xiumin, which seems to show that he may not be who we think he is. And when Chen is sitting in the theater watching the film, you see what fans agree is Suho, as the leader, probably trying to protect the members and prevent Chen from watching the film by covering his eyes. Whatever is being played on the movie screen is thought to probably be the Red Force trying to control EXO. You also see references to the movie screen with Chen being projected on the screen in their MV for "Lucky One" and the scene where Suho is running through the forest in their MV for "For Life," etc. These instances seem to be showing times when the Red Force are using the videos to brainwash EXO and to keep them incapacitated so they don't try to fight back or escape, etc. In "Love Shot" one theory is that the members are fighting to discover who has been corrupted by the Red Force and who may not be who they say they are, etc., which I see as a sort of continuation of the story in "Tempo." which is why you see them being very suspicious pointing their guns -- which are filled with alcohol -- at each other. (Get it? the song is called "Love Shot" so it has a double meaning: Love Shot like a gun and Love Shot like a shot of alcohol. :D) The flowers have two purposes, one is they represent Love and EXO is collecting love, but also the flowers are a big part of EXO's storyline. There has been a flower theme that continues throughout all of EXO's MVs. The flowers are thought to be something that EXO is collecting and trying to get rid of to prevent the Red Force from being able to control people, etc. They often collect the flowers and then burn them, like you see in "Love Shot" and in EXO-CBX's "Hey Mama." Blue roses also have some sort of significance, but I am not sure what yet -- we see EXO with a blue rose in their concert performances of "Lightsaber" and we see Sehun with a blue rose in "Love Shot." Some of what happens in this story is explained by past MVs and other parts will hopefully, be explained as the story continues in future MVs. Baekhyun is actually one of the main characters in EXO's storyline so he is often set apart or singled out in EXO's MVs. He is often the one that stands alone or is highlighted in the story. For example, in their "Power" MV Baekhyun has been singled out and is sort of separated from the other members, which seems to suggest maybe Baekhyun is the only member that hasn't been corrupted by the Red Force. So that is thought to be why in "Tempo" and in "Love Shot" we see Baekhyun standing on top of the building looking down on the rest of the members, almost as if he is observing them from another dimension or from another time period. Baekhyun is often the one who is going behind the sense to help EXO. For example, we see him disguised as a member of the police as he rescues the other members from the back of the police van in "Monster," and we see Baekhyun facing off with and confronting Xiumin in "Love Shot." :D And now that we have discovered that the Red Force has created X-EXO, EXO's evil clones, as part of "Obsession's" story, I am also starting to think that maybe in "Love Shot" we aren't just seeing EXO. I think maybe when we see the members dressed in the bright colors -- for example, when they are in their suits -- this might be X-EXO and when we see the scenes were they are in black, this could be EXO. Because, if you remember, in "Obsession" we find out that the members in all black are EXO the good guys, and when we see them in the colorful outfits with the crazy hair and makeup that is their X-EXO alter ego clones. This could also explain why Kai is dressed in a red suit. Although I am sure their stylists put him in red because he looks really good in it, I think SM chose it because it's another hidden message within the storyline. Usually, whenever we see red in EXO's MVs this has something to do with the Red Force, so for a long time I have been wondering why then would they put Kai in a red suit? However, now that we know about the X-EXO members, I am starting to think that when we see the members in their colorful suits and clothing in "Love Shot" this is actually the X-EXO members, so when we see Kai in red this is his alter ego clone, as well as the other members when we see them in suits, etc. I also think maybe the members who are collecting all the flowers in "Love Shot" are really X-EXO, as part of some evil plot, etc. If you look at the members expressions and the outfits they are wearing in the scenes where you see them collecting the flowers, this reminds me a lot of what they looked like in their MV for "Ko Ko Bop." Since "Obsession," theories now think that what the "Ko Ko Bop" MV was showing us was X-EXO right after they were created as they are becoming acclimated to the world and learning how to use their powers, etc. Which would explain why everything in the "Ko Ko Bop" MV is so brightly colored as well. But you should also know that no one really knows for sure what is happening in any of EXO's MVs. There are well known theories and storylines that are accepted within the fandom which we think might explain what is happening in each MV. And there are theories about how each MV is connected and where each falls within their larger storyline, but nothing is set in stone. As we have discovered with EXO's latest installment of their story with "Obsession," fan theories are constantly evolving and changing with every new piece of the puzzle and now it has completely changed what we thought we understood about almost everything in their previous MVs.
Center is usually given to a guy with outstanding vocals,visuals,dancing talent and most importantly STAGE PRESENCE. Kai is Exos centre. Because he has the best stage presence and is their best dancer(the guy is freakishly good). Other examples are Jungkook of BTS(dudes an ace), or Bangchan is skz(another ace), or Jennie of Blackpink(it’s not official though)
Love shot also became popular in public because of a few Kai live fancams that kept going viral every few months. The way he goes at the choreo is different as hell. Even if you put him in a group like superm with centers and main dancers of other groups, he is still the one who catches the attention in live performances and dance practices. It's just him. Though SM didn't give him an album or even a song till 2020 unlike other members who all were solo artists way before him, they know he is he center of exo so they gotta keep it like that.
Literally I think it’s just the Idol. As fans we all have our own vocal person for our favorite group but we all know who certain focal people are in certain group ie Mamamoo 🥰though I love all my girls since the beginning the focus person has always been for me particularly Hwasa and for me it’s because of the vibe that she absorbs and exudes out. IIt’sthe same with BTS for me my since the beginning it’s always been JHope because again he just gives out this energy that draws you in and makes you either want to laugh cry dance everything😘🙌🏾he just gives off such raw motion. But companies do have certain girls/guys in groups who are the focal person and you will notice it depending on like what kinda outfits they have on and the screen time they get.

Kai is the center(most charismatic performer and dancer) and face (the person public associates the group with) of the group. Companies try to assign positions but in a few years it's visible who is who based on how their image is. Many groups see gradual change in positions actually. But here Kai was always the one going viral and shit and hence promoting the songs to the wider masses. Hence he is still the center and face till now. EVEN THOUGH FUCKING SM DOESNT GIVE HIM LINES IN EXO SONGS AND MADE PEOPLE THINK HE CANT SING TILL HE DROPPED HIS EP.
EXO KAI is the center and face of the group. He is the main dancer that's why he's always in the center or in the front row. If you know Produce 101, SM has a training system like that, tho they don't participate in that show. Kai is always an A-class trainee with a 5 years training period (the member with the longest training period next to suho) and being picked as a center of EXO in that 120 trainees of SM that time is really mindblowing but if you see how he hold that title until now and seeing his fancams with a million views in a group song was really great. SM didn't choose the center just based on the popularity but on how he will carry the group while he's at the center and Kai showed it.
