Ummm "History" is not their debut song. This and "What Is Love" are their pre-debut songs. Their actual debut was "Mama" and there were 12 members split into two sub groups EXO-K and EXO-M that promoted in Korea and China respectively. All their MVs have two versions, Korean and Mandarin one, and it's important that you watch both versions of the MVs because the members that are actually singing are different, or have different parts in the songs. Especially MAMA that explains their concept, it's one of the MVs that differs the most, even in visuals. Sadly 3 of the Chinese members left in 2014-2015, leaving only 1 Chinese member in the group, Lay. He's unable to promote with them, but has a very successful career in China. 2 of the members enlisted for mandatory military service in 2019, before Obsession. Their leader, Suho enlisted this May, so they are focusing on sub-unit and solo careers probably until 2025 when all the members will finish their military service.

Since they are an 8 year old group a lot has happened and sadly there were some members leaving because of their 'amazing' company and because in some come backs they are split into two groups and in some they are all 12 and then at some point 10 and then 9, 8 and 6 in Obsession... it can be confusing. There are also two sub-units too EXO-CBX and EXO-SC (3 members and 2 respectively). EXO-SC will have their come back on July 13.

Exo-K sang in Korean (the Korean version is what you just reacted to) while Exo-M sang in Mandarin (there is a video for this same song in Mandarin). We the fans are called Exo-Ls. This video highlighted the Exo-K members though all the others were in it. The Chinese version of the song highlights the Exo-M members (the 4 Chinese members plus 2 Koreans) although the other members are in the video. You can watch History Chinese version on your own. When they had public appearances, tv shows, variety shows in both China and Korea as the whole group Exo, they spoke the language needed. "History" and "What Is Love" mvs are pre-debut songs, sort of an introduction to the new group Exo. The mv " Mama" was their debut song. They were introduced with this concept; (ready?) They are aliens from another planet, their planet, Exoplanet. They are 12 forces or legends, each with a superpower vital to life and balance of the universe. They, on their planet, are the roots to "The Tree of Life", giving life to the tree and keeping the universe in balance. The Red Force (evil in the universe) want to steal these powers and use them for evil. The Red Force comes and kills The Tree of Life, exposing the legends. The legends hide on different planets, and the Red Force keeps looking for them in the universe. Then the legends see Earth and the turmoil and hate on this planet. Thet want to help preserve life. In 2014-2015, 3 Chinese members Luhan, Kris and Tao, filed suit against SM citing unfair treatment and being overworked to the point of injury. They left Exo and went back to China to pursue solo music and acting. Lay is currently the last Chinese member in Exo. Ever since the 3 members left, they united the remaining 9 members as the final group, with a few songs sung in Chinese for Lay's sake on all albums, but not in public. Lay did performances in Korean with the rest of the group. All members were very creative and have all wanted to do their own solo albums with their own style of music, which eventually would happen for them. In 2016, Lay had been writing music and wanted to make a solo album. He was allowed to go back to China to produce it, still under SM, but since he used his own money to produce it, he gets to do what he wanted. (SM gets a % anyway). He does not want to seem like a traitor to his own country, and eyes are always watching, as the communist party is still a part of the 5- party government. Lay is a very high-status celebrity in China now, and one of the richest people in China.. yet he is very humble. So although if you include Lay, there are 9 original members in Exo. But without him, there are 8 members. As of today, the "Obssession" mv you watched came out November 2019, last year, and in that there were 6 members. Two members D.O. and Xiumin (Shoo-min) started their mandatory military service (18 months) last year, and Suho just left last month, and one more will leave before the end of the year. All Korean males must do mandatory service before the age of 28. So with Lay stuck in China, and two members in service, the "Obssession" album was made with only 6 members when there should be 8 (without Lay). You should do individual guides from Mouma-K, and only do the 2019 Exo Group guide, the 2020 one and all others, especially the UNHELPFUL guides suck big time....sorry but they are horrible. You can't get a sense of 9 members in under 12 minutes. To really appreciate the "perfection' that is EXO, which is also what sets them in a class high above any other group, you have to watch not their MV's which are amazing on their own, but their live performances which are filled with flawless vocals and amazing dance moves. I would recommend their EXORDIUM performance in Japan. That concert hold the world record for a concert sold ever 0.2 seconds. Why you ask? EXO live is superlative. Mama is the debut song. This is the EXO-K version. EXO-K had 6 members and EXO-M had 6 members, so together there is 12. It is still fun looking at the little babies from back then.

EXO's debut song was MAMA. EXO debut with 12 members. They were divided in 2 sub-units names EXO-K (korean promotions) and EXO-M (mandarin/chinese promotions). In 2014-2015, 3 chinese members from EXO-M left the group because of mistreatment from the company. Since then they promoted as 9 members. In 2017 EXO's last chinese member Lay stopped promoting with the group because of korea and china's political issues. Up till 2019 the group promoted as 8 members while Lay promoted in China as a soloist. In mid-2019 EXO members started enlisting in the military. As of now 3 members (Xiumin, Kyungsoo and Suho) are doing their mandatory military services. Now the group is on hiatus but all members are still active with their own projects. Hope this would help you understand why EXO has different number of members on their MVs.
Everyone has already explained that this isn't their debut song, it's one of their pre debut songs to just showcase what they are all about 🙂 There is a Chinese version, which includes the other 6 members of the group. If you've noticed at the very end of the mv when they displayed the logo, it showed Exo and then a little "k" at the top right of the logo. So this is Exo-k.

There are 2 only members of each group sang the song, but it pretty much showcased how talented vocally EXO were even before their debut. Mama is their debut song. When you watch Growl, the song that skyrocketed them to stardom, please remember that the MV is one-take and you’ll see all 12 members together.
EXO's "History" MV is supposed to be an introduction for EXO and it was meant to begin to establish their storyline and concept as a group. As aliens from Planet EXO, the members are about to be sent to Earth on a mission. "History" is thought to be about how EXO are still on Planet Exo and they are preparing to be sent to Earth. So that is why it has a very futuristic look and feel to it. There isn't a whole lot of story because it is a pre-debut MV so this was meant to just introduce the members and establish their concept. "History" is EXO's second pre-debut track. It came out about 2 months after their first pre-debut song and MV "What is Love," and about 2 months before "Mama," which is EXO's official debut, so this is more than 8 years ago. So in this MV the oldest, XIumin, was 22 years old. And Kai and Sehun, who are the youngest, were 18. Suho and Kai are the EXO members who trained the longest with SM before debut, so at this point they had been training for 6 or 7 years. Suho became a trainee when he was around 14 and Kai became a trainee at around 12. However, Baekhyun was the member to enter the company last and he only trained for about 6 months -- he was one of the older trainees -- he was about 20 when he started. If you noticed, in the EXO-K (Korean) version of "History" (the version you just watched) you only saw the 6 EXO-K members singing, and in the middle of the song -- when you talked about the crazy visuals -- that is where you see the 6 EXO-M members. However, if you watch the EXO-M (Mandarin) version you will see that the EXO-M members are the main characters in the story and they only show the EXO-K members briefly. This establishes how the two groups are separate and yet still are all part of one group which is EXO. Both versions of their MVs may look the same on the surface, but the story is slightly different because it is being told from a different angle or different perspective in each version. To understand the story in their "History" MV this is one time where it is helpful to look up the lyrics. The song is called "History" and in the lyrics they talk about making history. It's about failing at something and trying again to make it right. So, the theory is that in this part of the story EXO made some sort of unknown "big mistake" on their planet, so they have been sent to Earth to try and right their wrongs by trying to prevent the Red Force from causing a "big mistake" or prevent humanity from allowing a "big mistake" to happen on Earth. They are trying to prevent "History" from repeating itself. And they want to make "History" here on Earth. It establishes the whole reason why EXO are fighting against the Red Force and why they need to find the Tree of Life and restore peace. They can't let whatever happened on their planet happen again on Earth, etc. However, just so you know, we didn't fully understand that was what the MV and song was trying to tell us, until several years later, after we had more context to go on after we had several other MV stories and more information. But that is why we say, if you want to try and follow EXO's story you have to pay attention to everything and you have to remember as much detail about everything you have ever seen and heard from EXO. Because although you might think you understand one piece of EXO's story, with every new release from EXO, we get a little more information, and, sometimes it helps to confirm what we thought to be true and sometimes it turns the whole theory on its head and makes us realize what was happening wasn't what we thought after all. What complicates this even more is the fact that almost nothing in their storyline is in chronological order, so we, as EXO-Ls, have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of everything any of the members are involved in to try and piece it all together and figure out where each part fits within their larger storyline. And I literally mean everything, from their teaser videos, to their MVs, to their song lyrics and live performances, concert VCRs and even some of their choreography, as well as their sub-unit and solo work. Everything EXO does is connected. To see their dancing better, check out the dance practice for "History" the choreography is very unique. They have an EXO-K dance practice and an EXO-M dance practice. And it's one of their few choreographies where the two groups are not combined because they were completely separate groups in this MV. The part of the dance where they put their hands in their pockets and shake their pants, I interpret as the nervousness and uncertainty that they are feeling as they are about to embark on this new journey as they prepare to go to Earth, and also as a representation of the nerves and excitement they are feeling as they are about to debut. As you can see, even the choreography is designed to tell the story.

Here is some information about EXO that I hope will help answer most of your questions. EXO's concept and storyline is kind of complicated, so in order to understand what is happening in their MVs you need to understand their origin story. As you might have noticed, EXO is known for their vocals and for their dancing. As an SM Entertainment group it's really no surprise that the members are all amazing vocalists and dancers because that's just a fact about the type of people that SM selects to be a part of its company. SM has become known for its amazing vocalists and dancers and that is why its one of the big 3 entertainment companies in Korea and around the world. EXO currently has 9 members (originally 12) and all of them are amazing vocalists, however, 2 are considered the group's main/lead rappers (Chanyeol and Sehun), but there are several other members that are sub-rappers as well. If you follow SM Entertainment groups, you will soon discover that all of SM's rappers were actually chosen to become trainees for their vocal and/or dancing skills. All of SM's rappers learned to rap, or at least became good at it, after they joined the company. Therefore, all of SM's artists are amazing vocalists, as well as really good rappers. SM is known for having some of the best vocalists and dancers in the industry and the members of EXO are proof of that. Yes there were 12 members in EXO at the start of their journey! They were divided into 2 groups EXO-K ie k for Korean and EXO-M ie M for Mandarin! Each group consisted of 6 members and EXO has always produced 2 version of their songs that's Korean and Chinese! As of now there are 9 members and one of them is Chinese and 3 of them are in military! Well you will get to know the whole picture slowly!!
