The last use of them was on the original Abrams tank with the M68 105MM cannon. Carried I believe 5 of them as part of ammo load out on my tank in Korea back in 1994. They had a fused nose cone that could be set to explode from muzzle end out to I believe 3000 meters (memory may have failed me there). You set the desired range and the round would detonate 200 meters short of that for maximum spread of the flechettes.

The flachette rounds were used during Vietnam because they had lower recoil and were extremely adept at penetrating heavy vegetation. Originally, they were designed with stabilizers on the back end and dumped onto trenches in World War 1 or 2 (can’t remember which). They were extremely effective because they could punch straight through a soldiers helmet, but were eventually deemed illegal in battle. It’s actually a pretty fascinating piece of warfare history.

@richardkelly897
@richardkelly897 2 года назад
That should have been the first one he tested. I think being on the same line is fine because when the first slows down and expands, the second one would crash into it causing greater expansion and energy dump while exploding the first in every direction. Both shots in this test basically passed through without hitting anything.

I don't think it's anymore effective than a single slug. Field expedient "slugs" - Take inexpensive trap/skeet loads and cut around the shell at the wad but not all the way through. Upon firing the entire front of the shell leaves as one, essentially acting as a slug. This was the way old timers used their shotguns to harvest deer during the great depression due to the only available ammunition at the time and the need to provide for their family. EDIT: WARNING - Cut shells can be extremely dangerous, do not attempt and leave this technique in theory. Only professionals in controlled environments may attempt. Stay safe

Fun fact: Before the advent of Hardpoints for mounting munitions on planes, in WW1 pilots often carried a bucket of bombs, mortars, grenades between their legs or in their laps. This sometimes consisted of flechettes (pronounced FLEH-shets btw) which were basically like lead or iron lawn darts, dropped from the aircraft by hand into the enemy trenches and fighting positions.
