I have in mind the possibility of having a vertical supply pipe of about 13 feet going upwards from the wood-fired boiler through a small buffer tank (40 gallons) and placing both the expansion tank and the system pump there, near the top of the system. This would be an unusual arrangement, but is there any reason why it cannot be done?

In the system design, one of the important design relationships is between the expansion tank and the circulators. Specifically, the expansion tank should be on the suction-side so the pump head is additive over static pressure. If you want to elevate it 13 feet above the buffer tank, it will have no effect as long as the two components are moved together. Hope this helps.

Im going to share this with the salesman at our company.....here in TX boiler knowledge is lacking. I was just at a job....new Viessman and a old Bryan water tube were there.....they installed a new air separator and didn't add an expansion tank and chopped off the piping to the existing compression tank....i was like WTF is going on here. Im not boiler Jesus by any stretch of the imagination....but dang this is boiler 101 stuff. Thanks for the video
