Having taught in China for 15 years, I must say you guys gave great advice! One other thing I would advise is to make sure that you get your own apt if the school is providing one (if you want to of course) but this may depend on your age, experience, family status, type of school, education level. Make sure to put this in your contract and take a video of the apartment BEFORE you move in to verify that it is in good order and that the fittings and utilities are in working order and to verify bedding and utensils etc. Also don't have a security guard in your community or school who goes to sleep and locks you out at 11pm as he'll be pissed if he has to wake up at 4am when you stroll in from clubbing!! Again as the guys said make sure you get a working (Z) visa BEFORE you go to China. DO NOT RELY ON THE WORD OF YOUR SCHOOL on this!! You will be F*ed otherwise if the police catch you and you NOT the school will be fined and perhaps expelled from China. The old days when when you could turn up on a tourist visa with a high school education are long since over. Finally, DO NOT HAND OVER YOUR PASSPORT to the schoo or anybody else for "safe keeping"!! Love the Shenzhen t-shirt on guy #3 btw!

@@moniquealves3828 Try a google search on the term "International schools in China", and you will get this link - www.international-schools-database.com/country/china Pick your city where you want to work and you will find a list of schools there. Then do your research on each school you are interested in. Also, check out Dave's ESL Cafe at www.eslcafe.com/ While I have my opinion on some schools I will keep that to myself, but as a general rule AVOID training/cram schools.

@@uwanttono4012 I actually intended to teach in kindergartens, as I've got much more experience with kids at this age. I found vacancies only for native teachers in Dave's ESL Cafe (I am a non-native speaker, so it means it will be harder for me to get a job there as an English teacher) Once more, thanks a million for your advice! 🙏🏻

Thank you so much for this informative video and honesty. I almost signed with Sea Dragon. I really wanted a public school but the agency was mentioned here and elsewhere. I knew the salary was low but public school sounded simple and fun. The agency has a lot of good and bad reviews. So, its hard to really know and I feel based on placement. I just don't want to worry about money. Not sure I would save much after the salary in Shenzen. I can do it on my own! Thank you again

Hi. Thank you for this video, it was very informative! I just wanted to know, what's the difference between a recruiter and an agency? I'm looking at a bunch of recruiters like Adventure Teaching etc to help me find a job, but if they're the same as agencies I'd like to know before getting scammed. Thanks!

How do you know if there is an agent involved or not? Sometimes they try to hide it. Also is there a difference between recruiter and agent? I worked in china for a year and had heard about all the troubles with using an agent. I thought posted in a WeChat group and thought I was working directly with the school but turned out he lied was an agent. Also I was told that most of not all use agents for visa reasons- most schools don’t have the right government contacts to get Z visas for teachers. Is that accurate?

The issue with agencies - is that just a lower salary as they're taking a big cut? Or do they screw you over? I also downloaded WeChat but it has a really mean approval/authorisation step! I must be being stupid
@pbjofficial
@pbjofficial 3 года назад
the agency is matching employers to potential candidates so they will be taking a cut, just have that in mind

These agencies are notorious in China and are often in bed with the local police. Their goal is to make as much money from you as possible. They will screw you over BIG time so avoid them at all cost! Don't go unless you have at least 20,000 rmb (USD3,000) in reserve as an emergency fund to get you back home if you have to leave quickly.

no need to go home, just try to ask around friends or other teachers you meet where they work and ask for referrals!

Did they really say SIX TIERS to the cities?? Six?? Wow. I've heard of three or maybe four, but never six. I suppose in a tier six city they might still use chalk boards, which would be ok with me. : )
