This vlog is filmed in Osaka and Bangkok, I explore why Thailand is a better choice for expat life compared to Japan. ‪@PhilipJames360‬ #japan #thailand #expat
KEY MOMENTS
Part 1: Shot from Osaka
Seven reasons Japan could be attractive as an expat ⬅️
00:33 Japan is cheap thanks to a weak yen
01:01 Poilte and safe
02:01 Everything is clean and orderly
03:05 Professional sports and the spectator experience
03:56 Interview with Manu from Thailand at Moto Coffee
04:50 Matcha at Moto Coffee
05:18 Environmental factors
06:02 Pedestrian and bicycle friendliness
07:02 The grocery store, Japanese food, and tropical fruit
Part 2: Shot from Bangkok
10 reasons why Thailand beats Japan for expat life (in ascending order) ⬅️
08:59 BANGKOK
Reason 10
09:14 Tropical fruit
Reason 9
09:35 Grab bike and 'sabai sabai'
Reason 8
10:25 Better interpersonal skills
Reason 7
11:01 Thais speak better English than Japanese
Reason 6
12:40 Fewer xenophobes and Thais are more welcoming and less homogenous than Japanese. Thailand is more welcoming.
Reason 5
13:48 Better expat housing options.
Reason 4
14:59 Healthcare
Reason 3
16:25 Healthy living and fitness lifestyle options
Reason 2
17:58 "Ease" and fewer friction points living in Thailand as an expat than Japan.
Reason 1
19:26 Mental and emotional health
Interview with Japanese living in Thailand:
22:10 Taku
25:03 ‪@nampla.brother‬ and Ayaka
26:27 Yuki
Starting in Japan, I highlight several appealing aspects: the weak yen makes living costs cheaper, the safety and politeness of the people are unparalleled, the public transportation is incredibly efficient, and the environment is impeccably clean and orderly.
Transitioning to Bangkok, I list ten reasons why Thailand beats Japan for expat life. These include Thailand's more relaxed and less rigid lifestyle, the friendliness and familiarity of locals with foreigners, better English proficiency, and ease of settling in with various visa options; and joyful atmosphere in Thailand, which contrasts with the perceived sadness and economic struggles in Japan.
Other advantages are the more affordable and accessible healthcare, plentiful fitness options, and the overall convenience of daily life.
Thailand is the best choice for mental health and emotional well-being.
While Japan is a great place to visit, Thailand offers a superior quality of life and emotional well-being for expats.

For this video I shot it from Osaka and Bangkok. When traveling to other countries, it always validates why I love Thailand the best. It comes down to quality of life and warm-heartedness, and how a place makes me 'feel'. I feel best in Thailand. Question for you: where is it in the world that you 'feel' best?

- I once told my professor, (a Russian who studied, worked, and lived in Japan for a long time) that Japanese is kind. He immediately responded, "Japanese are very polite but not kind". So, it is nice to hear you pointed out 00:19:36 the differences between kindness and politeness because many people misperceive that politeness has to come from kindness, but that is not always the case. - Many people see Japanese as a collective society similar to Thailand, but that is not true. By nature, Japanese are very individualistic (this is polar opposite to Thais), but they are forced to live together in the collective society by rules, maybe due to the harsh weather conditions and wars. This explains why in the interview 00:25:46 he feel more human connections in Thailand than in Japan even though waitress/waiter are also welcoming in both countries. (actually, waitress/waiter smile even more in Japan because they follow that rules or manners, but in Thailand they are more genuine about their feelings, if they smile, it means they are happy, if they look grumpy, it means they are in a bad mood, that is it.) - Finally, if you ask Thais which country they want Thailand to become, 90% of the people will say Japan. Thais adore the Japanese so much especially cleanliness, work ethic, orderliness, and politeness.

Interesting to hear your professor said the same, about the difference between polite vs. kind. The thing that you mention about collective seems true. In Japan the 'collectiveness' is different from Thailand, it feels more forced in Japan, less 'together'. Whereas, in Thailand it feels the opposite and more natural. I wonder how much of Thai admiration is due partly to being naive to the realities of Japanese 'cold' and less joyful culture.

@@PhilipJames360 Many people realize the negative side of Japanese society, especially the young, and surely, they don't appreciate that part. Idealistically, Thais want the cities to be more clean, more organized, and the people to be more obeyed to the laws, and more responsible to the public. Ironically, the main obstacles of all these is the sabai sabai mentality. Sabai sabai could stand for happiness in buddhist sense or the term associated with laziness, irresponsibility. A japanese youtuber who have lived in Thailand for so long once said, adopting pros of japanese values with the thai values will create the most perfect human.

I am Thai and what you said is so true. I guested it's the orderly, cleanliness and the communal responsibility of the Japanese society we admired so much. Maybe in a sense, we feel that those are the kind of things far fetch for our society to be able to achieve. when I learned how Japanese teaches children in kindergarten, I was astounded. The amount of discipline and responsibility ingrained into every school activity is crazy. Sabai sabai is a thing in the Thai genes. I admired Japan very much BUT I would never live there just for the very same reason this video mentioned. I think many Thai especially the new generation do not realized how lucky they are, to inherit an exceptional cultural traditions and religion for which played a vital role how the Thai society are shaped into. We have a society of acceptance and not tolerance, thus making it more natural as a collective community. Not perfect by any means but much acceptable for everyone.

Wow, this is a praise of the highest order. Thank you! Thailand does look up to Japan as her benchmark - her model - although we realise we'll never rise to that level simply because we don't have their work ethics and, quite frankly, integrity.

100% true, not only Japan, Thailand beats every country on planet earth, while most western countries are drowning in debt with people queuing to rent unaffordable apartments and rising cost of living, Thailand is as affordable as it was a decade ago. Thai's also do not take BS in their life, if they do not like something they just quit, slavery isn't in their genes, they keep stress to a minimum, which is why they are so happy, polite and kind aka lack of corporate slavery like in Japan & west which sucks your soul for few pennies.

I find that like comment here. Japan is what happen if Thailand put their people into serious mode. It good place if you like travel to city and live like a City people perfect City suppose to be. While, Thailand are more of slider from City life at Bangkok to Villager kind and cheerful life. Chang mai still between City and Villager life meanwhile bottom of Thailand are Fisherman villager life. Japan do offer this but it is very hard to get into when local are seeing you like alien because they can not communicate with you. While Thailand as sabai sabai. They can not speak English but they will help you and get to know you too.

When I first travel to Japan everything seems pretty as expected. But when look hard enough, I really feel stress in the air and it's heavy. That's make me don't even want to work in Japanese company in Thailand lol. Japan is still top on my travel bucket list. Very very nice for traveler.

For Thai people, Japan is the older brother that Thailand tries to follow. We try to follow in the footsteps of Japan even though our country is only a 3rd world country. But we will not abandon our old habits. fun-lovingness It is a simple and uncomplicated nation. We are a people who live a simple and friendly life. Japan has an advantage in that it is a serious country. and set goals As for Thais, they have simple, laid-back personalities. Like siblings who have different personalities. Each person has different advantages.

Before I retired I had three favorite countries that I considered: Japan, Brazil and Thailand. For Japan I was not suited.... the politeness level is too high there. Brazil was too dangerous with muggings at gunpoint and you always had to be aware of that. Thailand is far more relaxed, so I decided for Thailand.

It also depends on the preference. If you like to be alone and love being by yourself, a nice area in rural Japan would be best. On the opposite side, if you want warmth from other people and acceptance, Thailand and many other asian countries are receptive and appreciate foreigners who want to know about their culture.

Japanese women will never ask you for money, and you have a ZERO chance of getting your items stolen while you're sleeping or awake. If you lose your wallet full of cash the odds are that it's waiting for you at the nearest police station as well. You cannot be broke and live here so if you're on a budget then Thailand is a much better option. You CAN OWN LAND here, I own Commercial Property so it can be done easily.. You can buy whatever you want but don't expect Japanese bank loans. You can own, homes, apartments, land and businesses without issues and you will never get scammed with leasing or rental agents as you hear about in Thailand.

Big plus for Japan. I've got experience in both countries. It's way easier to find a girlfriend (an actual one, not a prostitute spending time with you for money) in Japan. Someone who actually likes you, doesn't ask for money, makes their own money, is educated and intelligent. That's common in Japan but very uncommon in Thailand.
