Sorry for some bad audio today. It's on the auto audio adjustment setting and it jumps around and causes problems. That isn't going to work. I need to try with a different mic. The camera really lost me and focused on the flowers behind me, too!

I also wrote a book called "Linux Administration Best Practices". It helps me a lot when people buy it from Amazon.

Good info, not something that people often think about.

Great information. Thanks! I have been living in DR for 3 years and I have always kept ties in Puerto Rico but my state of residency had been Maryland. Now, I just changed it to Florida.

I think if any retirees are living only off of social security, you do not need to file federal taxes.
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog Год назад
You always need to file, even if you are only living off of savings. Americans never get a filing exemption. You don't have to PAY in many cases, but you still have to file saying that you don't have to pay.
@rogermills2418
@rogermills2418 Год назад
when my mom retired 15 years ago, they told her she didn't have to file if she only had social security income. she hasn't filed in the last 15 years and has never gotten any letters from the IRS or anybody else. I will always have to file because I have a 401k, IRA and interest on savings.

@@rogermills2418 Yes, I live in a 55+ community in CA. Many residents do not file because of SS only.

Thanks Scott- I had not thought much about this yet. I got my tix for first visit to Nicaragua this March! Definitely feels more real when you have tickets and reservations, etc. Excited and nervous. It"s been a decade since real travel.

Better audio experience this morning. Listening from the San Francisco Bay Area. Looking forward to visiting Nicaragua in 2023.

you talked about a lot of stuff but not the most important thing - how to maintain a permanent legal address in your domiciled state and what that consists of. please make a part two.

Not a bad idea. The challenge is that every state has different rules. And needs. Even just focusing on Americans, there's 50 different sets of info... plus PR and DC. And do you even need one? That varies, too.

I’m in Georgia, retired at 62 to take care of my mom. After she passed I went back to work (3 years ago) I pay state taxes, I understand that, but I still have to pay SS . But I don’t pay federal anymore. I don’t understand how states get their money if they’re no state tax, federal I guess?
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog Год назад
States have loads of ways to get taxes. Remember that the primary tax base for states is property, business and sales taxes. Not income. Income tax is often seen as a really non-productive means of collecting taxes as it is SO easy to skirt. But sales tax, for example, is very hard to skirt. States with no income tax can rather easily have larger tax bases than states with income tax.

We will be living off savings until we start getting social security. At that point we think my check will pay all of our bills. I am a originally from Florida (40years) but currently a South Carolina resident. Eventually I will need to come back and establish Florida residency but I think I’m ok for a while ? Thx…great video ! ( still working on how to get our big dog Roscoe to Matagalpa…stay tuned 😃)

Hey Scott, thanks for all you. Can I ask, we're a family, currently situated in central America but considering moving to Nicaragua. I was wondering, are you available to chat online at a convenient time, maybe for an hour just so we can ask a few questions? Of course we want to pay you for your time. If this is possible could you pls advise how we could make contact 👍

If I just live off Social Security income, I don’t pay any taxes in my state? I will still need to file though.
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog Год назад
I don't know the details of state filing with only social security income. Some states may tax that. Some definitely do not. Some require you file. Some do not. I'm a Texas, I definitely never have to file.
@stephenharper6638
@stephenharper6638 Год назад
All states give seniors a break on taxes. Most have a 50K threshold before you start paying anything significant.

I am curious here : if you no longer live in the USA, why does it matter that homeschooling regulations are better in Texas ?
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog 8 месяцев назад
Because US laws apply to US citizens no matter where they live. You can't escape US law by living outside of the country.
@attentioncestpaslegal7847
@attentioncestpaslegal7847 8 месяцев назад
@@ScottAlanMillerVlog That sounds terrible.
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog 8 месяцев назад
Trust me, it is. What's worse, is if you move away and have kids, and they have kids... even kids who never speak English and don't know the US and wouldn't be allowed to move there... are still the "property" of the US and owe taxes and must obey the laws or face international prosecution. It's insane.
@attentioncestpaslegal7847
@attentioncestpaslegal7847 8 месяцев назад
@@ScottAlanMillerVlog Ohhh right, children of US citizens are de facto US citizens so they must pay taxes. From a fiscal perspective, I understand. But from an educational standpoint, I though the US had no say as soon as you are not physically present in the US.
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog 8 месяцев назад
MAYBE the fed has no say, but the fed doesn't really have any say anyway. The challenge is that you are "owned" by your state of residency. So whatever state that is remains in control of your kids' education no matter where you are physically. For us, that's Texas. It's one of the reasons that we chose Texas. We are originally from NY and their system is draconian.

I read online that you can obtain residency is South Dakota by using a mail forwarding service, submitting an affidavit and getting a drivers license, all in a period of 24 hours. Do you know anything about this? Does this get you state tax excemption while working remotely in the US from Nicaragua?
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog Месяц назад
If that really works, it should be fine. I don't know anything about the process. But if South Dakota lets you, you should be good to go.
