Hi friends, just to clarify: all of this inspo-gathering and shopping happened back in May and June, way before No-Buy July! It just took a while to fit this video into our filming schedule. No-Buy July is still going strong and I'll be posting another check-in soon. Sorry for the confusion! I thought I mentioned in the video that this all happened a month or two ago, but that sentence might have gotten cut when I was tightening up the video (it was originally like 45 min long...le sigh). Thank you for watching!
The sweater with the skirt! YES! It inspires me to do that with my dresses. I primarily wear dresses and leggings because of my fibro. Pain my legs means pants really bother me.
As others have stated, I appreciate the fabric content and care info. I didn’t see an outfit here that wasn’t a smash success. Super fun. Love the space too.
Dear Hannah, this video is so refreshing! I wish that more content creators would post these types of in-depth love letters to pieces like this instead of fast fashion "hauls" that encourage death spiral capitalism. This type of content is inspiring!
Oh my goodness that monochromatic outfit with the red sweater with the trousers 😍 stunning!! Also, as a knitter, I absolutely adore the way you talk about knitwear. It's wonderful to hear you talk so knowledgeably about fibre and caring for knitted garments! And hearing the love and excitement you have about knitwear makes me so happy! I'm not a "professional" knitter by any means but if you ever feel like commissioning a custom-made hand-knit sweater/any piece of knitwear, let me know.
Oh my goodness, ditto! Knitting for someone who would appreciate the finished fabric AND take care of the knitwear is the holy grail for a knitter. Plus HLP isn't afraid of color or avant-garde fashion making it an even more attractive thought.
Surprisingly I did too! Lately I've been more into wearing solids but more videos like this may convert me back to patterns. Hannah has such style that I think she could make any outfit look fabulous!!!❤
Dare I say it, the outfit looks much better on you than in the original fashion editorial. What a great pair of pants and I appreciate that you took time to style them different ways. I love your tonal dressing, especially with such an assertive colour. A note about dry-cleaning: I am a professional tailor, and you can hand-wash and home clean ANYTHING. I work with some of the most expensive fabrics and garments, and I suggest that you avoid dry-cleaning like the plague. Dry cleaning uses harsh and unpleasant chemicals that are no good for your clothes or skin. Manufacturers put 'dry clean only' labels on garments mostly to cover themselves against product liability claims, often because they have cut corners in the manufacture, not because they have to be dry-cleaned. As tailors working with $5,000 plus garments, we have people who hand-wash client's garments using baby shampoo. Baby shampoo is great for natural hair fibres. It is worth learning now to properly press (iron) garments, since that will preserve your surface finishes and make them look sharp and new. For outerwear such as jackets and coats, you need to wash far less frequently than you might think - only once a year. To make the biggest difference to your clothes, get a soft clothes brush and gently brush your pants, jackets, coats as soon as you get home and take them off. Brushing will remove all of the light surface dirt and pollution that typically happens in cities, and will reduce the amount of actual washing. The garments then simply need hanging up and airing to make them fresh. Sorry for the long comment. Taking control of the clothes washing will give a lot more freedom when deciding what to buy. Great outfit, great vid. Thank you.
Thank you! This is brilliant information. I've always hand-washed dry clean only goods...except for a white corduroy blazer i bought last year...I haven't dry cleaned in many many years. So great to hear it from a professional and I will definitely invest in some baby shampoo!
Thank you for your comment. Good ironing is a key, so I almost never wash tailored clothers made from natural fibers - airing and some textile spray (previously tested on an invisible part). Brushing makes magic, and a good suit brush is a great investment.
Those trousers are a smash hit! Every outfit you put together using them was just so strikingly beautiful. Also, the jumper with the skirt you made is such a lovely combination! It's giving family (blood/chosen) Sunday lunch, slightly dressed up, but still cosy and comfortable
I would be the most dedicated viewer of a HLP fashion channel where you research, design, and produce your most desired designer fashion items. Just putting that out into the universe
First, I really enjoy the fashion content and hope it can sustainably continue. Second, I’d love to see a video detailing your process when searching for a second hand item to buy. I struggle to buy second hand online because the whole process seems so daunting. From finding an item (where to shop?) to interpreting listings to determining what that item might look like on me when there is no image of a model wearing it, etc
I use Dryell on dry clean only clothes as long as they don’t have any stains and more just need to be refreshed. I’ve never had wool, alpaca, or cashmere shrink with it.
Came here to suggest dryel too! I rewear my dry clean only pieces a few times before batching them in the dryel bag. Works perfect, and I have yet to ruin anything.
I love your orientation to fashion! I would also love to continue hearing you discuss fabric content. I have been paying attention, but I still have a lot to learn in that regard. Thank you as always!
In love with the pants! I actually like them best with the red cardigan at the end. I also imagine them well with a blazer. And I love the pink cardigan with your blue jeans! It gives such a nice vintage vibe, like I care but I don’t kinda aesthetic.
hi! i have a pair of Tibi trousers in the same fabric and I wash them by hand in cold water, lay them flat to dry and then iron them (on low heat) as needed. haven't had issues
As much as I love your beauty content, I'm living for the fashion and home videos as of late. I can only speak for myself, but I feel like the pandemic really eroded a lot of my love for make-up, so it's great to see videos centred around things that aren't in that space. Thanks for sharing! (And the pants are divine. What a great purchase!)
you make the absolute most insightful, transparent, down-to-earth, and practical fashion content I have ever seen on the internet. Thank you so much! as someone who has loved clothes all their life but has recently been in a huge funk with getting dressed, your content has been a breath of fresh air and I can't get enough!
Any time you want to make another video talking about an outfit for half an hour, please feel free 😄 I think my favorite pairing was those gorgeous coral trousers with the Free People tiger tank top! There was something a little subversive, a little cheeky and insouciant about wearing such a casual, fitted top with the drapey, long lines of the designer pants. Thank you so much for sharing your process!
I really love your fashion content. I too care a lot about fabric composition and trying to get out of drycleaning. I like that you buy designer second hand and not too much. Keep making this content!!!!
Hi Hannah!! Thanks so much for this video! I am obsessed with your aesthetic and eye for fashion, colour, and details. I could listen to you describe beautiful garments all day long lol ❤️. Love you so much!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I think this is very much proof of ways that fewer nicer things can lead to being more satisfied with what you do buy and own. The description of how to find the same/similar high quality clothing on the 2nd hand market is very helpful for myself as someone who has very little experience buying online secondhand. Seeing you try on different combinations in a wardrobe playtime was fun to see, I think the jumper skirt combo was quite glamorous. Hannah if you're worried about ruining the pants by washing them you could always do a patch test on the belt by dampening a small patch of the belt with water and seeing how it dries. If that works out you could also gently wash part of belt and watching how it effects the fabric quality and seams. I look forward to the pants and the jumper's future career in your wardrobe with great interest.
Yes, please teach us more about fabrics and how to get second hand garments. I am size 16 so for me it is a struggle to find designer pieces. But, I would totally love your insight here. I learned about wool today :)
That red on red but not the exact same colour. I loved it. I literally gasped at the gorgeousness of it! My heart leapt. I normally would think it’s too close and will clash. But it’s perfect!
Your fashion videos showed up in my recommended videos and I am so glad they did. Really like your style and view on things. Hope you continue down the fashion lane 😊 That outfit and colour combo is to die for. Great find! Also if you want to cheat hemming the pants, there are iron on hem tapes. They often come with drapes but are also available for hemming pants. And I personally never bring any of my clothes to a dry cleaner. I use the hand wash or wool setting on my washing machine and make sure to wash delicate things separately if I am really anxious about the first time washing an item. I have a lot of wool and hand wash / dry clean only clothes. And so far everything is washable in my machine (front loader). Even my wool coats and blazers 🙃
I love the video concept of creating outfits from what you already own inspired by pins you love, I could watch that all day (if you wanted to do more of that).
I think you might be my favorite fashion you tuber. So loved your minimalist wardrobe video, so now I’m looking back through your fashion content. Being included in your thought processes and analysis is so satisfying and enlightening. I especially love the pants worn higher with the silk cami and also with the bright cropped sweater. Beautiful classic silhouettes!
This is one of the best videos I’ve watched in a long time! You have such a beautiful way of speaking and explaining things. I wasn’t surprised when I learned that you were an English major in college when I watched your interview on TFD! It’s so lovely listening to someone who is passionate and cares so much about a topic. Thank you for making these videos ❤️
It is fun, since I found these videos so inspiring even if my silhouette / style preferences feels so different 😄 I started thinking what I would love to see in my wardrobe, how to find my style and make cleaver purchases, so thank you for inspirations on how to do it ❤
I just finished the Pinterest video, and was looking to see if you updated on if you bought the pink V neck sweater! What wonderful(and slightly strange) timing. I'm really loving all this fashion content you're giving us!!
The pants look great on your frame no matter how they’re styled. What surprised me was the versatility of the sweater, and I absolutely loved it with the sweat pants (& I’m usually not a fan of sweats). Congrats on your wardrobe addition!
Love this video, advert vs reality. Champagne cami w red pants😍. But that skirt though…I love it, I would wear that everywhere. I love the way it moves as you walk.
Thank you for explaining the allure of the deep v on the sweather! I used to have one and could not realise why I am missing it now. Love your videos xx
Love this type of content! Please make more personal style videos. I am curious too about your thoughts on body type, essence, colors, etc. (I am just dipping my toes into these topics recently and find it a little overwhelming)
Is there a better garment than a good sweater? I don’t wear straight sizes, so it’s a little more difficult for me to implement your secondhand strategy, but I was really inspired by how you took the new garments and immediately incorporated them so well into your existing wardrobe. This wasn’t the point of the video, but I noticed how the color palette of your wardrobe is carefully curated. The new pieces seamlessly fit into that color scheme. A good reminder that fashion is seasonal and ever-changing, but personal style is timeless.
Even though your style isn’t my style, and we for sure don’t have the same body type, I’m loving your energy around these pants and they look so great! I know you like the monochromatic look and I thought that look was my favorite!
This video is making me happy I’m no longer that into fashion and would rather just be comfortable and focus on other things, most of the time. I put my effort into makeup and my nails. Love your videos! ❣
I really enjoyed this style of video! I’d love to hear you talk more about fabric qualities. Maybe show off some of your favorite pieces you’ve had forever and talk about how the fabric makes them unique?
I loved this video on SO (and literally sew) many levels. I love awide legged pant and these pants both ways are extremely attractive to me. My body is markedly different than yours in size and shape, but I am already plotting a replication of them on some level. Some of the appeal is the juicy stunning color, but I also feel like the silhouette would be extremely successful in A fabric with a bold print as well. Thank you for speaking on the importance of how natural fibers can be elevated by being blended with other textiles, especially something like polyamide can add resilience to wool that's worthwhile, both for wearability and care. It's about the longevity of use and wear in your wardrobe. I truly love to hear you speak on this subject.
Hi Hannah, can you make a video dedicated to fabric types in clothing? How they hold up, how they wash, etc.? It would be super helpful for someone like me, who is just getting into checking out fabric content prior to making a purchase.
Love the look, love the other looks with the pieces individually! I think that the sweater is more 'you', but the pants are just on the line of 'you' and an 'ideal style of you' and I'd love to see you incorporate more similar looks in your daily looks on insta stories! :)
I love the color combo and the contrasting fabrics. When the no buy is over I may look for a similar pair of pants. My legs aren't long so I'll probably have to hem and still wear high-waisted.
I love the black tank tee and the red sweatshirt the best with those pants!!! Looks lovely! And of course the original sweater and the bodysuit u tried
About fabric content, I knit and so a large portion of my wardrobe is animal and plant based natural fibers. The fuzziness she mentions is called a “halo” and I agree, alpaca is lovely and light and has a beautiful halo without looking too fuzzy. Cashmere and generally soft fibers have a shorter staple length and that is why they pill and take more care, mixing it with nylon, polyamide, silk or other strong fibers give it durability and longevity. If you are someone getting into wools and animal fibers and worried about care there are wool washes like SOAK that you can buy, and it’s actually very easy to get a soaking bucket, toss in your woolens, then press out the water between some towels and lay flat to dry. The pants are trickier because of the (yuck) polyester, it may not allow the wool to bloom and drape correctly if hand washed without blocking or steaming and may cause areas to drape oddly or not lie correctly. The best part about natural fibers is that they are much better about “self cleaning” than synthetic, they do not hold onto stains or odors the way plastic clothing will, also you will find that your clothes become even more comfortable and beautiful with time provided you care for them. Also they breathe unlike any synthetic fiber can, it’s amazing in a wool sweater to realize that you don’t get really sweaty in your clothing, even if you get too warm. After a while, wearing synthetics starts to feel like wearing plastic wrap, clammy and gross. Natural fibers are more expensive, but it’s something that improves your clothing by so much it’s worth the investment.
Wow this is inspiring me to look for more colorful pants... I've always felt my summer wardrobe was a bit bland and desaturated and I've never really considered colorful pants. I'm going to keep my mind on this and try out bright pants if I come across them!
Those pants were made for your shape. I thought all of the tops looked fantastic. I loved one of your previous videos looking at trends and trying to find that within your closet. That would be a great semiannual video.
I'm way late to this video BUT two things: 1. Gods, it was so fascinating to hear you talk about fabric. thanks for giving that insight into your considerable expertise. 🤓💚🐲 I doubt more of that technical kind of content would be for your audience, but if you know if any RU-vidrs who do fashion and discuss it in that kind of technical detail, I would love to know about them! 2. I haven't finished this video yet, but I wanted to comment before I got to the end that I would love to see a stacked flat with these pants. I am feverish happy to leave stacked flats/tennis shoes in the 00s where they belong, but I feel like these pants are too casual (at least in silhouette) for a heel. Idk if stacked white sneakers would with with the fabric, but if so that's what's in my head. Okay I'm going back to the video now. I'm curious to see where you land on shoes 😳🧐
so i own a yarn brand, and i do a lot of knitting and spinning, and another thing about alpaca is that it's rare that alpaca will make you itch. it's a fiber that gets along well with most people. and yeah, that sweater can absolutely be handwashed in cold water and dried flat. i'd hand wash the pants too and then just carefully iron them with a clapper, but i am lazy about dry cleaners.
I wore 'dry clean only' wool pants every other day as part of a uniform when I had no access to anywhere to handwash them, and I would simply throw them in the wash inside out on cold and then hang dry hanging over a plastic hanger. And then, when the pressed seam began to fade, after a few weeks, I would take the pants to the drycleaner. I'm not sure how long the pants would have lasted past the year and I half I had them, but I do know 1. It probably helped that I washed them infrequently compared to times worn. 2. I probably should have used a gentler detergent. 3. I didn't care if they got messed up, but they always stayed in good shape despite my best efforts to the contrary.
Very interesting! And the pants! Fabulous when you wear them up high; they looked marvelous with everything! Have to say, while I can understand the charge you got out of recreating the inspiration image, I think dropped crotch pants with excessively long legs are dopey looking. I always think they look like the manufacturer cut corners in producing the garment. Maybe that’s a little too “form follows function” for art, but in the end, this is wearable art that can’t be worn as it is in the inspo image without destroying the pants. But that’s just me. Enjoy your purchase as you look great in them!
I've never watched fashion RU-vid, but I loved this video! Will go back and watch more of your fashion content, I also usually buy second hand high quality garments or sew them. I would like suggestions on how to find good quality garments on the internet, especially regarding sizing. I usually shop second hand in person (I'm lucky to have places to go near my home) but I just had a baby, he's 2 weeks old and I'd like to acquire a few breastfeeding friendly pieces but can't go in person. Suggestions on how navigating shopping second hand online would be great!
