Hi Alex, When I work on such repair I would always put the cap or whatever component in the original position. In the past I had instances where the board didn't fit back into the housing because the moved component was in the way of the housing. So I learnt to always position the component in the original location if I didn't have the housing to make sure it's not in the way. Great video as always.

These cards are used typically in broadcast facilities which is my area of work for communicating between different areas. Typically called ‘talkback’ where the director calls out to video server team and calls ‘Roll A’ to play the video clip in port A. Or to communicate with an outside broadcast facility. We used RTS products for a number of years before changing vendor

This board reminds me of the Dialogic DM3-IPLink board from the late 1990’s. It was a PCI card that could do multi channel voice over IP. It cost well over US$10k and was the first board I ever programmed with an FPGA. Great video and repair; time to buy some fancy glue from Alex!

@NickoDim

Super glue does not like heat. The pads will fall off when solder is applied. The only thing I would have done differently is perhaps use solder wick instead of wire as it stays flat.

Quick comment/question: should you have put kapton tape between the cap and the pcb traces to make sure, in the long run, no shorts will happen between the cap pads to the pcb traces? (I understand that the pcb traces are isolated with the solder mask, but just to be sure...)

Greetings. I too was concerned about that as well. However, I observed that the traces were not immediately beneath the point where the cut was made. Therefore, with close attention the incision could have been, and was carried, out without damaging the surrounding traces. I was also concerned about the negative terminal until the glue was applied. It did not appear sturdy enough for me. The glue removed my fears.

Hi Northridge repair ! I wanted to ask a question. As my laptop screen is nasty I wanted to replace the panel and know pretty much what to do and how. But i am just wondering why is the reason we disconnect the battery while we replace the panel ? Is there a reason why replacing the panel shorts anything while the board has ambient juice from the battery while it is fully powered off and unplugged from power supply ? Would just like to know from a quite experienced from the looks of it technician. Thanks much.

The screen connector might do electrical damage when being removed or put back as some pins can touch other pin If the battery is still connected, there might be some power through that connector. So dont try to save time when a single short will cost def way more arse

HI, very interesting, but I have two questions: if the cap is for voice, can't the wire replacement for the pad induce some interference (i.e. like an antenna)? when cutting the wire directly on the board isn't there a risk of cutting the two traces on the board?
@NorthridgeFix
@NorthridgeFix Год назад
U need to know what you're doing and you'll be fine.
@robertpage2023
@robertpage2023 Год назад
Mr. Alex's surgical touch is from experience in working and repairing so many devices. As he said, "Knowing" is what it's all about along with his vast experience in the field. Antenna's on a board are specifically placed and I don't see where the extra wire soldered to the base of the cap is a problem. The cap itself would have to be an interference as it is made of aluminum with much more surface area exposed. Anyway, a capacitor is a passive component and cannot amplify the signal.
@jackofalltradesmasterofnon4835
@@strawman9410 My guess is; the cap is for power supply. It’s not a part of a filter. (It’s too large). The wire is still short, in comparison to the wavelength of audio. I would assume any conversation of analog/digital is done close to the connectors.
@Sloxx701
@Sloxx701 Год назад
@@strawman9410 100 uF bulk electrolytic caps on a telecom/intercom/VOIP board like that are likely being used for power rail filtering, just like they would be on most types of boards. You can also tell by the width of the traces used going to the foot print of the capacitor, this is a high current power trace, not a signal trace. So no, a wire a few mm longer there would have no effect on the circuits.

Hey @NorthridgeFix! How much do the pads differ depending on the factory process? Do you notice certain manufacturers having crappier pads than others? For example, If Sony used a better manufacturer for their motherboards, would it be harder to snap an HDMI connector and it's pads off a board? Love learning from you. I just wish I had the liquid cash to buy everything from your shop. :D

Either the circuit card (pre-populated) was manufactured incorrectly or with contaminated materials, or the soldering was done improperly when populating the card at the OEM. Usually though it is just handled too roughly. Why do think its video cards and consoles and gaming laptops that are constantly sent in? Teenagers and kids are rough with their things. I'm so delicate when unplugging my screen from my thunderbolt port, I pull with just enough force so it pops out on its own. Never yank, and never at an angle.
