What you can do mate is get an orbital sander with a 240 grit pad, add some oil to the stainless and go over it with the sander it gives it an excellent Matt finish. So basically professionally scratch it to save you looking at scratches at the beginning. Then just re finish it same way whenever you want. That’s what I do 👍🏻

Good video & thank you for telling people they will scratch! I am a sheet metal woker. We get so many calls about scratched stainless countertops.If you want a countertop to stick without releasing use a glue specifically made to adhere to metal. We use Loctite PL Premium for countertops all the time and do not have any release issues. Also recommend returning all exposed edges with 1/2" so people who run hand along edge of countertop do not get cut.

Quick question... you said that stainless steel countertops go between $70 and $100 a sq ft. At the end you said this countertop would be over $1k. Then you said it's 24sq ft. That's tells me you saved way more cause a countertop place would have been $1890 to $2400 😳

I have some ideas for you. Don't use plywood as your base, tell the fabricator to use square or rectangular tubing to make the base, way stronger and will not sag or absorb water. Second, clean surface with lacquer thinner and use 2k clear coat to spray the top and sides with a spray gun and compressor, 2 coats with some reducer to help it flow like glass, let dry, and flow coat it, spraying 2 more coats, go crazy. Now to have scratch resistance, and you repair it like a car. Also if you're rich Tamco sells ultra hard clear coat for boats and cars, looks like glass but hard AF. Same formulation as what they originally used in Disneyland, unless I read that wrong
@kellyreid978

This is such a great idea! With a stainless steel countertop, you can roll dough (baking), temper chocolate, etc! The possibilities for all things baking and cooking are endless with a stainless steel counter. The only modification I'd make to it is to install a cooling mat under the stainless steel sheet because stainless steel takes time to cool down when you put hot stuff on it (example: chocolate to temper it). A cooling mat will eliminate that problem and make it easier, and more enjoyable, to work (baking cooking) on that countertop. Thank you for sharing!!! It's a really great idea!!!

I know it's been a few months, so I hope you see this...I'm actually looking into making one section of my counter stainless for the exact reasons you mentioned & I had the same thought re: it holding onto heat. What do you mean by a cooling mat? I was thinking just a garden-variety insulated mat on top but I think that would still prob get/stay hotter than I'd like so now this cooling mat idea has me intrigued! Thx in advance 😊
@claramorgan8670
@claramorgan8670 2 года назад
@@marchi.fleming Professional kitchens, dedicated to candy making, have a cooling mat installed under the stainless steel. For what I've gathered, some cooling mats have different temperature settings to choose from, depending on what you're making. Those cooling mats can usually be bought from specialized vendors only. However, they're worth it. I hope this helps.

If you have access to a metal brake, or the ability to build/use a DIY brake, you could always make it so the sides capture the table. You can make it slide on, from one direction, then you could turn the stainless, into a big C clamp basically. It would clamp the table, keeping the stainless secure, while making it removable. I would lay a 1/4" foam mat or lining, over the table, to act as an insulation, as well as to have something to keep the clamps tight by resistance.
