From dawn to dusk. Sit back, relax, and be transported to the Lake District with a specially commissioned immersive film that celebrates the sights and sounds of a landscape that inspired Beatrix Potter.
The Lake District is a region and national park in Cumbria, North West England known for its glacial lakes and rugged fell mountains. Beatrix Potter eventually settled here after growing up in her 'unloved birthplace' of London, becoming an award-winning sheep farmer and respected member of the local community. When Potter died aged 77 on 22 December 1943, she left 14 farms and more than 4,000 acres to the National Trust.
Produced and directed by award-winning filmmaker and photographer Terry Abraham, this film captures intimate shots of the native wildlife that Potter would have sketched and later immortalised in her storybooks, alongside epic panoramic footage of its mountains and lakes, featuring locations where Potter lived, worked and admired:
Catbells and Derwentwater
Newlands Valley
Watendlath
Yew Tree Farm, Coniston
Tarn Hows
Hill Top and Near Sawrey
Esthwaite Water
Ullswater
Great Langdale
Read an interview with Terry Abraham on our blog: www.vam.ac.uk/blog/museum-lif...
This film was produced to accompany the V&A exhibition, Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature, until 8 January 2023.

The Beatrix Potter exhibit at the VA was an almost life affirming experience. Never have I felt so connected to someone I have never met. Her books always felt special but to actually feel like I walked through her life was beyond words

My favourite place on earth. We're very lucky to have The Lake District within an hour of our home. It changes with the seasons and never fails to impress us with it's magnificence and beauty.

I lived in Far Sawrey, next to Near Sawrey, until the age of 20. I am so glad of my early life with all the seasons and links to the farming year. It is stunning to live in too. The video took me right back to being a child again. I went to see the exhibition at the V & A, where bits of this video are shown on a big screen. Well worth the admission fee. There are lots of her water colours from different collections.

I was fortunate enough to go and see the Beatrix Potter exhibition at the V&A when it was on. This film played on a loop on a big wall projection at the end of the exhibition and no word of a lie, I sat there watching it for a solid half hour / 45 minutes and forgot where I was. Was so meditative. Want to go there myself properly now ❤

One stunning scene after another, just a beautiful area this Lake District. Then at the 8:42 timestamp.....I had to freeze frame the video. And just stare. Wow! Just speechless looking at that landscape and view. What a lovely place to be. Wish I could visit one day and experience this beauty first hand.

Stunning! Hard to believe such a magical place exists here. A perfect setting for so many types of art to be drawn from. Incredible work capturing such beauty. This is somewhere now on my list of places to visit and I’m very much looking forward to the exhibition

I must have lived in the Lake District in another life....ever since I saw the first picture of it decades ago, it’s looked like home. My favorite episode of the David Suchet “Poirot” series is the one called, “Dumb Witness,” bc it’s set there in and around the most beautiful home and everything feels so familiar to me. I do love it so!

It’s like something that came from the mind of Tolkien himself. I’ve been when I was less than a year old and long have i desired to return to this majestic landscape.

This is phenomenal! Thank you for encapsulating so many memories (founded or otherwise), and for allowing us to enjoy revisiting them since travel during this pandemic is obsolete. Please stay healthy! 🐰

I have an idea of England as a very manicured place that has been smoothed out over centuries. I'm from Canada and haven't visited England (yet!). This video shows that there's still rugged beauty there, and it makes me want to visit all the more.

Less than 1% of the island is 'built on', with England being at 2%. This decreases even more when the tide is out. You really don't have to go far to find a field.

Stunning! I am just now reading "Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life" by Marta McDowell. If you have not read it or even heard of it, go out and buy it. It's much more than a mere biography (of which there are dozens). It's a time-capsule of her day-to-day gardening life; what she planted, where she planted it, and who gave her plants for her beds. It's marvelous for the gardeners among us.

If I could return, I would skip the very dark house tour and just enjoy the garden. I saw an English robin, and bunnies in the orchard.

Was the Lake District a, Nat'l Park when BP was alive, or was it in the domain of 'public land'?

It became a National Park in 1951. Beatrix Potter died in 1943.
