Completely agree about Classroom and experience. You made an important point about being accepted and respected by those on site. Anyone who doesn't have experience and thinks they know it will be found out very quickly. If you have the humility to ask and learn, you will get great support from those who would otherwise be criticizing you.

Have you considered going down the route of building your software system in house? It will cost more in the short term but if you are having a hard time finding a system to meet your needs, you can be certain other companies have the same issues. Therefore once you've built it you can sell it.

@Ashville , observation of the new portacabin office, why have you got a POWDER Fire Extinguisher in an enclosed space???? These are mainly for Class C gaseous risk and for SPECFIC risk NOT office space. I would suggest you use a 2kg Co2 for the electrical cover and a 3 or 5litre Water as I am sure there is sufficient coverage nearby outside. Has the new off ice had a FRA completed??? if so I would seriously question why POWDER> I have been in the fire industry 20 years so just giving you some advice.

I've spent the last 18 months trying to Implement a new system at our workplace. After many meetings and zoom calls and more meetings and on-site workshops they admitted that it can't do what we asked for. And guess whose fault that is? Apparently they have thousands upon thousands of happy customers and it's an unfortunate situation we "cannot agree a way forward". I'm sitting in that meeting like "no we CAN agree a way forward. Your system needs to do what you promised". Unfortunately it wasn't my decision to make and we agreed to part ways. I've now got to start all over again but fortunately I've seen a few good systems but it's loooonnnnggg man.

Any job in general it is good to get hands on experience. Any logistics/transport industry such as buses/trucks needs hands on experience. Only 1 month in a bus workshop taught me more about the logistics and human element to a business than a classroom did in 11.

My personal take on that software company Daniel is “take it as a sign” to stay away from that company. As a person that has been in business about the same as you and seen things and felt things like this happen to me where you fight and fight to get something to work and it turns out to be a nightmare and then you say to yourself after if I had only cut them loose. This I think is one of those times I think they might be a nightmare after you get the system to “work”. Just my 2 cents. Great episode as always!

If the mighty D does not end up retiring healthy (very) wealthy and wise, having had a brilliant career and amassed a sea of respect from everyone he has engaged with- then there is no such thing as fair, or Karma, or justice! I'm nearly 60yo and I've met every type of person out there, from saints to murderers and Daniel blows me away with the energy he puts into the details and lengths he goes to, to be fair and do the right thing. It's so easy to slide by and just don't hurt anyone around you- it takes a serious effort to actively do the best you can and deliberately make a positive impact on everyone around you.

Extended car warranties are mechanical failure warranties. They do not cover wear and tear, the component has to have failed. But as vehicles get older most components then fall into wear and tear.

Had 3 cars over the years with warranty wise which is the company you was offered the warranty through and never had an issue with them at all, you just pay the diagnostic fee then they approve the work.

Getting in touch with Warrantywise could be a good route for the Amarok vehicles should you prefer to have them covered. Alternatively have an account in which you deposit an amount each month to offset any unexpected repair costs. If no problems the cash is still yours. Thank you.

Better off extending warranty with VW if you can, third party warranties on cars are often a waste of money as they try to get out the repairs every single time.

Re your IT challenge. I am presuming they are not writing a custom solution just for you, they will be adatpting their core system to your specific configuration. Your first step should be to ask them to arrange visits to at least three of their existing customer base and speak with the customers yourself without anyone from your supplier being present. Secondly, I don't know your use cases, but you mentioned delivery drivers needing to get sign offs on customer premises. You must go for a cloud based solution and as you are Windows based go for Azure, not AWS, as the security and identity management is totally integrated. Don't know anything about your construction business, but have just retired after 40 years in IT/telecoms... 😉

Also consider scaling, when going with a server with minimum spec, can this spec be changed with no downtime or need for reinstallation etc. Hopefully it is a virtual server that can scale vertically for a higher spec (as your needs will change over time this logic should apply include any database(s) as well) and horizontally for load balancing as your fleet and company resources grow.

I like how Vesha broke everything down for you, 3 years for 3 vehicles for 3 grand is well worth it, even if they don’t fail, it’s worth the 3k to have the peace of mind, if one engine blows up like you said then it’s worth it, if you don’t have the warranty, think how much that will cost. It’s better to have it as a preventative measure than to have no measures in place for this kind of thing.
