A highly audible experience.. it's worth putting your headphones on and settling in to the suspension of disbelief for a few minutes as you experience a 1940's London Blitz during World War 2. Get a feel for what it was like to be sheltered in a London tube station from the bombing above ...Don't forget to turn the volume up and huddle under your blanket..

Jesus Christ. That was terrifying. I'm not watching it in full VR, just on my laptop. I'd made the mistake of turning it up full volume with my headphones in, and I'm using a volume enhancer that wasn't even up that high, and about a second after I did, the bomb hit and I literally just flinched and panicked for a second. Can't imagine what it'd be like being there.

I wouldn’t know personally, but my great-grandmother lived through this. She rarely went to the shelters though and instead actually used hand-cranked sirens occasionally. She actually used to have some of the sirens back in the 70’s, but I don’t know what happened to them.

There is one thing missing from almost all the blitz sounds. The sound of the bombers, which was a continuous throbbing, which carried on throughout the raid.
@Liquona
@Liquona 7 лет назад
Thanks John it is there, the hum is more noticeable at the beginning. Though I wonder if we should have made that sound louder and more apparent?
@johnbarton7543
@johnbarton7543 7 лет назад
Yes the throbbing engine noise was very apparent particularly when the guns were silent. The other thing I remember is the way the bombs sounded. They were dropped in "sticks" you could hear them quite faintly and then louder and louder as the plane passed overhead. (fingers crossed)

No need for sorrow, but thanks all the same. We had no fear, and as kids, we thought it was a big adventure. Maps that we used to stick little flags on. Aircraft recognition books that gave us pictures and dimensions of all the aircraft (ours and theirs) We used to watch the battle of Britain, before the blitz began, from Parliament Hill in north London.

@@Nine-Signs Amen to that. Thank you for acknowledging this--people forget it much too easily. Much of my personal fascination with the 1940s comes from having spent a lot of time around refugees from more recent conflicts. The foundational myth of modern Western culture is that of our own invulnerability and the idea that unpleasant things can only happen to brown people far away who aren't anything like us. It is humbling to remember that this is not true.

Although most early raids lasted 8--10 hours, If you had already worked a full day before the raid, exhaustion would take over. It must have been terrifying for babies and little kids. This is an example of being way below ground. Most people were in their gardens, in Anderson shelter's ,with only a thin corrugated steel roof over you head, plus 14'' of soil. Watch the excellent film, ''Hope and Glory'' for a realistic experience . There are further recordings in the London Museum, with realistic Air raid shelter's and sounds of the Blitz.

My grandma has memories of when bombers mistakenly bombed Ireland. She lives in Dublin and remembers the bombs exploding in what she described as ‘banging noises’ and she remembers the throbbing/buzzing noises of the planes. She was just 1 year old at the time. Her parents would tell her stories while the bombs fell and closed her ears. The bombs is what woke her up at night. However because she was so small she doesn’t remember being scared.

Ngl this is the best video to feel the Blitz that I've seen. Watching videos with footage, explaination, etc, is all good but this video of just sitting in the Underground with people keeping calm and carrying on (though that poster was rarely used) is probably the best way of actually getting a feeling of the Blitz. Sitting in a pre-made accidental bomb shelter, listening to the German bombers overhead, the flak and sirens as well as the occasional night fighter while just hoping they didn't score a direct hit on the station. The fact that it's VR /interactive makes it so much better, with the sounds and flickering lights as bombs disrupt the power lines.

By September 1940-two months into the battle-faulty German intelligence suggested that the Royal Air Force (RAF) was close to defeat at the hands of the Luftwaffe. The German air fleets (Luftflotten) were ordered to attack London, thereby drawing up the last remnants of RAF Fighter Command into a battle of annihilation. British fighter production rose from 256 in April to 467 in September 1940-more than enough to cover the losses of BOB-and Fighter Command emerged triumphantly from the Battle of Britain in October 1940 with MORE aircraft than it had possessed at the beginning !!

Time to try again with my wireless headphones with volume all the way up! I might modify your advice just a bit-- feeling your smartphone in your pocket seems like a great way to break immersion. Multiply this by several hours then multiply by 59 consecutive nights. Then add many, many more nights. A few years later there's the V1s and the V2s. Churchill had ordered that the underground railway stations be kept locked at night. He thought sheltering in these stations would look like cowardice which could be catching! Londoners ignored him and broke into the stations and saved their lives. My mother was in Liverpool and she was bombed out of her house twice. She was tired of starving, so she joined the WAAFs, was sent to Yorkshire where her aerodrome was again bombed by the Luftwaffe. Her elder sister was made homeless and spent days pushing a pram with two boys in looking for accommodation in Liverpool, but because she had children she wasn't welcome. On top of that, you could emerge from sheltering only to find your house bombed and possibly looted. Took years for my dad to persuade my mum to drive through Germany (to Switzerland for a holiday). He spoke fluent German was blonde and blue eyed. They thought he was German. He had been in RAF Bomber Command. Funny old world, as he used to say.

Must be pretty unsettling being in the dark subway tunnels at 3 AM hearing those bombs and sirens going on.

Omg whilst this was on my mum played Sirens like them because she heard this on my laptop and I literally gave up with life and hid under the desk... I thought I was gonna die. So dumb.

This is great. I loved it. Just some notes. Holborn starion is a very deep tube. You would not have heard sirens or plane engines. Bombs woukd be muffled considerably. Tube shelteres must not lie within 6ft of the platform edge. If I had your skills, I would have picked Earls court or another shallower station. Sirens sound for one minute. Hope this is useful factual info.

You wouldn't hear that much in an underground station. Nearby explosions maybe. Gunfire unlikely and engines absolutely not. You probably wouldn't even hear engines at ground level, the planes were thousands of feet up. A maximum effort bomber command raid, 800+ Lancasters and halifaxes, would be completely silent to those on the ground.

I'm guessing the sirens either could be a Carter, Castle Castings, Klaxon/Secomak GP12, Klaxon/Secomak GP8 or Gents
