Dry ice is not a good thermal conductor on it's own. That's why when using dry ice to cool a cpu in a computer they have to use a thermal interface material, In that case they typically use isopropyl alcohol if I recall correctly, which would be a bad idea here due to it going up in flames from the lava. I'm not 100 percent sure this is what is going on but if I was a betting man I'd put all my money on that.

The way dry ice works when in contact with something hot is the dry ice rapidly off gasses so quick that although the lava seems to be sitting on top of the dry ice....at the molecular level it never came into contact with the dry ice once...only the gasses of the dry ice. So if you threw dry ice in lava in would just hover above the lava on a gas cloud so thin it would look like the dry ice was sliding on top of the lava and surprisingly not melting as fast as you'd imagine. The gas cloud is so thin you can't see it with the naked eye...but at the microscopic level hot materials can not touch dry ice...only the gasses of it.
