Results are in!! We incubated half of a clutch of snake eggs inside our bullsnake's enclosure, and the other half in an incubator, to see which method hatched more/bigger babies. The results are surprising!

I super appreciate how much you guys try to let the snakes hatch naturally with a little intervention as possible! I've tried watching other channels similar to yours but hated how they were pulling snakes out of their eggs as soon as they pipped/were cut open.
@_Fizel_

Yeah. And these are pets so a bit of help is expected. Cause there's a major difference between a baby that died because of a bad egg tooth and literally drowned in its own egg, and a baby dying because of say that major spine kink in one of the last few clutches...

@@Tell-Your-Dog-I-Said-Hi Brian doesn't do that anymore from what I've seen. We can't hold things against people when they've made the effort to change bad habits/practices. If you watch his more recent egg cutting videos, he doesn't pull them from the egg even if he has to untangle an umbilical cord. People make mistakes, but if they learn from them and change how they're doing things it's a lesson learned and it should be acknowledged as such rather than thrown up constantly even though they're no longer doing that negative thing.

I must add. For the weighing, you probably need to weigh them the same amount of days after they hatch. Cause the lot that hatched first might have lost some weight in general cause they are older and havnt fed yet. And vis versa.
@snowpuppies1

I did think that would likely be more accurate.
@arynphillips5888

True, but also a scale that only weighs to the nearest gram is not going to give a ton of accuracy for this. I'm surprised they haven't gotten a scale with more accuracy. Especially when they weigh hognoses, you will see a clear size difference and they will both come out as 3 grams, and one is probably 2.5 and the other 3.4.

The weight difference can result in the ones hatching first had a week of absorbing their yolk with no food to compensate for the energy spent on moving around and living in general. And the freshly hatched babys are still full of yolk. Similar to human babys drop up to 10% of their birth weight during the first days until Moms Milk is fully there. To compare the babys better in a future experiment, you should weigh them the day they hatch and compare to the second half when they hatch later. Sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes. English is not my native language

I just commented about this too, I wish I'd seen your comment first 😂 That would be an interesting experiment, to see if it's typical for baby snakes to lose weight during that small window of time, and how much weight is typical to lose.

Yes! I commented, too. Though I think they would need a more accurate scale to see that % change, since theirs rounds to the nearest gram. 10% of a 6 gram snake might not change the reading!

Yeah... and the small sample size doesn't help either. The bigger clutch had both the smallest baby (20g) and the largest baby (26g) which might have skewed things a little. I'd love to see this done with a larger clutch and with weights taken at the same age!

So if the parents are 2 different strains of axanthic, what does that mean for the babies genetics-wise? Does it mean that they have the genes for both and present for neither? Would they in turn be able to breed with a partner of either strain and have axanthic babies? The little honker is absolutely adorable

Technically the weight experiment wasn't perfect, considering one tub of babies were older than the others (even if it was only a couple days). I think weighing them all the day after all have hatched, and then weighing the others the day after they hatch as well. It would make it a little more accurate 😊

On average the incubator hatchlings were heavier but the one small one weighing 20g ruined it for them. The biggest was in the incubator. So I would say that one was too small a sample size to make judgements on. 😊 But it’s interesting to see these results.
@lidiaf9598
@lidiaf9598 Год назад
The incubator babies were lighter. If we do not include the outlier, the incubator babies sum up 23/24/26=73g while the enclosure babies sum 25/24/25=74g. Even without the 20g baby the incubator babies had an average lighter weight, and their weight was more inconsistent, while the enclosure babies had more stable weight

I'm afraid that you can't draw any conclusions about average weights from this experiment, since the runt of the clutch at only 20gms was in the incubator group, and dragged down the average weight by a lot, and it was random chance which group that runt ended up in. Using a different method for finding the average - along with the larger sample sizes you're hoping for in future, would resolve that problem!

You know, those babies that didn't come out axanthic will probably be very good for future breeders if any of them are het for BOTH axanthic genes. I'd be interested to see in the coming years if some of them spawn lines renowned for very reliably producing axanthics by carrying both genes.

1) If your scale only weighs to the nearest gram, you can't calculate to a higher precision and expect the result to be accurate. You don't magically generate precision by combining numbers. 2) Weigh the younger half again after as many days, but before they eat, and see how much weight they lose from burning a week's worth of energy. 3) And you might want to take a look at the variance of the weights in each half and overall. Because if the difference in average is really small relative to the variances, it makes it more likely to be just coincidence. The heaviest and lightest babies were both in the same half, so that does make me smell a bit of a rat.

The "69" is the symbol for Cancer the Crab. And it's supposed to be a horizontal symbol. Those patternless are gorgeous! I love that brownish orange.

PLEASE do not incubate eggs in an enclosure. Snake Discovery has set a horrible example here. Temperatures can easily fluctuate if you don't know what you are doing and you will end up with deformed and non hatched eggs.
@raphaelwilliams1820
@raphaelwilliams1820 Год назад
From an outside perspective, this “experiment” was just to cover up their own negligence in setting up the new incubator. It was there for several weeks and every egg video they referenced getting around to it. The experiment itself and how it was framed seemed problematic, as whether the perfectly good eggs live or die was made light of because “haha we procrastinated and that’s relatable. It caught up to us though, so predict whether our babies will die in the comments!”
@fenus609
@fenus609 Год назад
@@raphaelwilliams1820 Correct! They got so lucky it worked out. I've heard people trying this before and because of the incorrect heating and fluctuating temperatures the eggs go bad or the animal inside becomes deformed. They had NO reason at all to delay the incubator. They have staff and they KNEW that they were going to breed lots of snakes this year. They knew but chose not to prepare??? Like wtf
