Fantastic! That was great fun although I didn’t completely understand why you used oxides and different acrylic media to influence the print. Assuming it is to absorb ink differently. I will explore further. Right now I don’t have an etching press but will be trying some of these technique for my gelliplate and other mark making. Perhaps an etching press is in my future.

Hi Donna, yes the different pastes and gels are used to achieve different tones and textures. You can actually use collagraph plates with gelliplate too, worth experimenting!

I know how you feel, I am just emerging from motherhood myself and only had more time to myself recently. I use Polymetaal Press HS-35 Tabletop Etching Press which does take a bit of space but Akua makes a really good to press alternative that you could easily stash away: www.amazon.co.uk/Akua-20-Inch-Pin-Press/dp/B00DRE967Y I printed for a while from a very limited space before I got my studio and it’s possible but you do need to be a bit more tidy and organised. Hope you manage to find some time to get back into it, the joy you will get will be hugely rewarding 🤗

This was very informative thanks. How long will your plate last? Asking as I did not see you use your Shellac and wondered why. Also wondered if you initially wanted the melted plastic to retain all the shapes you had when you used your iron? I love how experimental you approached this piece. Very brave. Exciting result to watch.
@CollagraphPrinting
@CollagraphPrinting Год назад
Thank you Carole, the plate won’t last as long without varnish, but I’m really into editioning and I like the detail you get without the varnish. When melting plastic, soon as you melt it onto the plate it will loose some of the textures but at the same time gain some too, very exciting as results are always slightly unpredictable!

@CollagraphPrinting

Thank you 🤗. The plate can be made of any cardboard, best is mounting board. There are different types of mounting board and the surface depending on if you want to start with dark or light tones. If you start with dark, then rough surface mounting board will be ok. If you want to start with light, then enviromount board is best. Hope this helps

You're work has really inspired me to up my game in collagraphy printing! You've given me many new ideas and techniques to try, including switching to the Akua inks. Unfortunately my first order of 8 inks arrived with half of them extremely thick and stiff, nowhere near the thick creamy concistency I was expecting. I've read that cold weather can cause this. Do you have any suggestions about how to remedy this? I have some Akua Blending Medium coming, but these are so thick I fear I'd have to use a LOT of it. Other methods? Would gently warming the inks help? So eager to dive in so hoping you can help! Thanks for all your work on RU-vid!!
@CollagraphPrinting
@CollagraphPrinting Год назад
Oh my gosh I am a huuuuge fan of your prints I follow you on instagram! It’s a huge honour to hear you are inspired by my videos thank you so much! So, about akua ink, the ink consistency varies depending upon the pigment and temperature conditions. Ink will be stiffer when cold and looser when warm.To loosen and thin the ink, mix in a few drops of Blending Medium with a knife. To loosen unmodified ink, work it with an ink knife under a warm lamp, hair dryer, or place the jar on a hot plate set a very low temperature. I actually got this instructions from mccains website as they describe it really well. I really hope it helps 🤗

@CollagraphPrinting Год назад
@@bobcornelis5514 interestingly I opened a new large tub of black akua and it was really stiff, just like you mentioned! When I mixed it with blending medium it was a little bit lumpy but printed ok. I guess you will get more out of the jar with the stiffer ink, it will last longer 😊

I’m curious what the acrylic behind the heated plastic does? Adhesive heated? And confused about mercacious iron oxide’s I quality?
@CollagraphPrinting
@CollagraphPrinting Год назад
Hi Kat, the dried acrylic medium gets activated by the heat and adheres the plastic to the plate. Micasious iron oxide is a paint by golden with rough surface which, similarly to carborundum adds dark tones to your prints

@CollagraphPrinting
@CollagraphPrinting Год назад
Good question! Actually I didn’t. It will mean your plate is more vulnerable but if you are not into editioning then it won’t matter. I like to keep all my details exactly how I made them and shellacking will always create another layer and will affect the tone.

What is the difference between Collagraph Print And Mono prints
@CollagraphPrinting
@CollagraphPrinting Год назад
Hi there! Collagraph uses a plate that you carve into and stick things on and can use it to print intaglio or relief. It will show all the marks of contours. Monoprint is essentially painting or rolling ink on eg plastic sheet and printing that on paper. You can mix both techniques in one print
@NasserAlhameli
@NasserAlhameli Год назад
How did the plastic stick to the plate?
@CollagraphPrinting
@CollagraphPrinting Год назад
If you paint acrylic media on one side of the plastic, wait for it to dry, and iron it on to the plate (with baking sheet in between), it sticks on really well!

Accidental marks accidental results. It may satisfy the amateur but here no skill to any degree nor self challenge are attempted . Simple drypoint with drawing far surpasses these chance decorative effects.

@CollagraphPrinting Год назад
I love being an amateur, I don’t feel in anyway there’s anything bad about that, as long as you love what you do. In fact I feel I will always be one, as art is a journey of discovery and the joy in it, is that you could never reach perfection
@jezzab5621
@jezzab5621 Год назад
@@CollagraphPrinting Art is a spiritual journey . The journey of discovery and the path of the artist requires huge amounts of effort , will , love of the craft and passion. The amateur forgoes this for easy decorative returns. An artist never sets perfection as a goal, it has no meaning, reaching for perfection ? and it's never discussed among artists. Having painted and printmaking now for some 58 years it gets no easier as a committed artist to achieve good or even great things. Melting plastic and inflating it as a "process' may sidetrack a new audience from the multiple traditional possibilities in print processes and why learning a technique and the mastering of media medium and tools reward the artist.
