The flying car affiliate of Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng unveiled its latest experimental drone car during a short test flight on June 18, 2024. Scores of spectators watched as Xpeng AeroHT had its two-seat intelligent electric vehicle called the Voyager X2 perform a vertical take-off and landing in the city of Langfang in the northern province of Hebei.

Back in the days when I was a teen watching the tv series “Beyond 2000” and the show stating that we would have flying cars, I truly believed that it would be the US that were going to design the first roll out of the flying car but here we are witnessing history in the making and it is in fact China leading the race. Actually if you look on RU-vid, there was a fellow that did this with a bathtub about 10 years ago. The faa in the usa would have fits. Not to mention things are so litigious here anymore, one mishap would end it.

The title is misleading, this is called an electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle. Short for eVTOL, it has nothing to do with flying cars.

In Chinese, 'vehicle' is “车”, and 'car' is also “车”(the same word). So this might be a translation error.

The same question was asked to henry ford some 100 years ago and they wish the horses will stay forever because horse runs faster than model T. The same mentality doesnt changed after more than 100 years, maybe the same dna from great grandfather to their grandchildren

@@Ameng3471 I get what you mean but the main benefits of these drones is when they are flying. When they are not a large area is needed for safe landing/take off. Plus they have no wheels so charging will need to be brought to them. I can’t see them replacing cars in someone’s garage.

Engine? It should have 4 motors. If designed correctly losing one should still provide enough lift to keep it in the air.

Drunks arent a problem with helicopters so why would they be with this? The average guy at the bar wont be able to afford it anyways. And with AI and automation manual driving may not even be an option since human error is the biggest problem with small aircrafts to begin with.

It’s in our genes to explore and try new things, but flying cars, I think, are one new thing that is going to be forever in the future - never quite ready for prime time. We’ve had vehicles for ground travel for over a hundred years and we still have trouble using them safely. So, flying cars? Ha! Forget about it!

Air transports like this won't happen in China, people are gonna go mad when they drive those things. This is basically a helicopter that looks like a drone. Pilots needs to be trained for years just to drive a heli or plane.

Cool until those blades cut something in half.. will a pilots license be required? Why not put a bend in the arms and move the blades higher? Up above the passenger areas. The math differences wouldn't be that significant. It would seem safer. Fun project though. I am envious.

is just a mini chopper carrier.... but i dont think is suitable for urban traffic even thogh is up in the air. Imagine amount of mini choppers in the air with crazy noises as if the big flying bees. But i would considered this for an emergency use like medical supply kits delivery emergency or delivering organs for transplant. I dont see the mini chopper to be part of public air transport any sooner unless for moon or mars where there is no road built.
