It's like black snake fireworks, but on acid. Literally! What do you think happens when you mix sulfuric acid with sugar? You’re going to want to check this acid experiment out! The purpose of this experiment is to see what happens when we mix sugar and acid. We’ve seen experiments where you can mix sugar with acids, but we wanted to really understand the entire process. Grant Thompson has done some cool experiments in the past and in this video, we're just experimenting and playing with acid. We dive into the chemistry of sulfuric acid and sugar. We also have some other fun tests we performed. Hopefully this gives you an idea as to what can or can’t be experimented with sulfuric acid.
This interesting acid and sugar experiment is perfect for those wanting to try some cool experiments: acid experiment, sugar experiments, cool chemical reactions, sulfuric acid and sugar mixed, playing with fluoroantimonic acid, and fun and easy science experiments.
If you want to test something creative and entertaining or do an activity such as: science experiment, STEM project, STEM science experiment, science fair project, science fair experiment, or a fun weekend project...watch the video to learn more.

Hey, a buffer or buffer solution is something you put in a liquid (in this case sulfuric acid) to make sure its pH stay constant even if you put in contact with for example sodium hydroxide (something with a different pH). I'm not really sure why this is important for drain cleaner but for exemple you have a buffer in your blood because you need to have a very precise and constant pH to stay healthy and you don't want any ion in your body to change it.
@retrograde3971
@retrograde3971 7 лет назад
NeRv0usSTA A buffer stabilizes pH because it's a reversible reaction. A buffer is when you make a solution of a weak acid and its conjugate base or a weak base and its conjugate acid. Sulfuric acid is a strong acid, which means it completely dissociates in water rather than partial dissociation. So I don't really understand how they can make an H2SO4 buffer, maybe it's something else, some other kind of buffer.

Though buffers will only be formed with a mixture of a weak acid and weak alkali. Sulfuric acid is a strong acid and wouldn't form buffers. Anyway, the buffer will resist the change in pH best when the concentration of acid and alkali is the same, anyway.

This reminds me of the experiments I used to do when I was 8 years old using household chemicals found in the home. I'd just combine minute quantities of various detergents and chemicals typically found under the kitchen sink to look for any reactions. The coolest explosives I made was mixing Crystal Drano with gasoline, and a muriatic acid bomb by pouring some muriatic acid into a 2 liter bottle, twist up some aluminum foil (not tin foil) and drop it in, tighten the cap tightly, shake it up, and throw it (far a away). For the Crystal Drano bomb, I first used a McDonald's straw because they're really fat, capped one end with candle wax, poured in the Crystal Drano, then capped the other end with wax. Then dropped the straw into a close-able container of gasoline, and sealed the container. The gasoline dissolved the plastic of the straw, and once it made contact with the Crystal Drano, it exploded. Later, I drilled a hole into a ping pong ball, and used that as the Crystal Drano container, and plugged the hole with wax. It gives a longer "timer" before the gasoline breaches it. The muriatic acid bomb begins its reaction the moment you shake the bottle. Once you tighten the cap on the plastic bottle, shake it violently about 5 times, then throw it at least 30 meters away, and take cover (it will expel a cloud of acid which you don't want to be anywhere near). Then, watch as the plastic bottle doubles in size before the pressure makes the container fail. The loudest explosion was from using a 3 liter bottle. I was in artillery in the Army, and that explosion rivaled an artillery cannon firing. It rattled windows several houses away in my neighborhood on 1/2 acre land parcels. Oh, also don't set one of those off on a lawn as you will have a perfect 20 meter circle of dead grass for at least a year. If using a 3 liter bottle (or larger), it is concussive, and you can see the concussion wave spread across the ground ... Do not be anywhere near it as concussive explosions can cause brain injury. This is what kids who are bored, and in a rural area come up with (at least I did) LoL

I'm fairly new here so you might have addressed these things in other videos but I have three things to mention. (1) What would happen if you put the carbon column in a baking soda solution? (2) Could you add sugar to sulfuric acid instead of the other way? It might be easier to mix in the vessels that way. (3) Please, Please use proper technique for smelling potentially caustic gases. You should waft the gas toward your nose and not put your nose into the substance.

A buffer is a substance that resists changes in pH. It's usually a weak acid or weak base. Lots of things that need to stay at specific pHs, including blood, contain buffers.

A buffer solution can resist small changes in pH so its pH remains reasonably constant. Shampoos and stuff have them in so the pH doesn't change and damage your hair and your body is full of them so enzymes don't denature.

Indeed they are. You can also calculate the pH of a buffer solution using pH = pKa -log([HA]/[A]) (it's the concentration of negative A ions but YT comment formatting is not a fan)

Powdered sugar dissolves in water. In the event you did this experiment in a drain pipe, you'd need a long, flexible, blunt object to break the carbon into powder, then water to flush it away.

why do you add the acid to the sugar instead of sugar to acid? so you wouldn't have to stir...
@Colaman112
@Colaman112 7 лет назад
I don't think you want to do that. If you added the sugar later, it might instantly react with the acid, and you might have a really bad day.
@davidtollefson2693
@davidtollefson2693 7 лет назад
Colaman112 do you know that for sure? it looks like there is a long delay before the mixture gets warm
@Colaman112
@Colaman112 7 лет назад
I'm not 100% certain, but it would make sense. And I don't think it would even help with not having to stir since the surface tension might just make the sugar float on top of the acid.
