This is a quick overview of the VESC controller for DC electric motors. This is an open source electronic speed controller designed by Benjamin Vedder. We are looking to have some fun with this with the Discord community by pairing it will some motors and seeing what we can come up with.
If you are interested in the VESC you are welcome to join the Discord community where we will be sharing the results of our combined efforts. High Voltage is 100% committed to the Open Source nature of the VESC and will be sharing what we learn.

I look forward to where you take this. You already have a good handle on ASI products which are a pain in the ass to set up. ASI includes protection devices in their designs which increases their reliability quite a lot. I'd like to see you put that 100/250 through max load tests next to a BAC4000. I'm pretty sure the BAC4000 will shut itself down while the 100/250 burns out.

I am sure there will be casualties on the journey 😆 Some side by side tests would be really good. Cheers

@@HighVoltageKits There are VESC products that account for the sorts of things that happen in EV's, but they can't be quite "open source" since they go further than the Vedder designs which lack any forms of protection. It's not that Vedder designs are bad, just in need of further improvements. I'm not sure why he doesn't include them! I get it back in the 6 fet ESC 4.1 days, but that was years and years ago! By now, he's had plenty of opportunities to see the weaknesses in his designs and to change them. IF he did, then the protections would no longer be taking away from the open source nature of VESC products. Also, even without them in place, VESC stuff is still pretty good, just more likely to die than they should be.
@HighVoltageKits

Thanks for the information. We will see how long it lasts I guess! But it is amazing seeing how many are being worked on all over.
@de-bodgery
@de-bodgery 2 года назад
@@HighVoltageKits Agreed! VESC IMHO is going to take over. Proprietary solutions like ASI or Nucular rely on a specific company and whatever shitty support they might provide! VESC...being open source and how it works nearly identically regardless of who made the VESC based controller has the potential of deleting all the proprietary solution providers! Literally anyone can support any VESC based product! There's VESC solutions for connecting to the IGBTs powering Tesla motors! Clearly VESC can be taken to whatever heights you might want.

I think variety is the spice of life. But the ability to share knowledge is a big advantage. It will be nice to see some of the development make it back to the original designs.

I use a HGLRC VESC on my fat tire Ebike I built back in 2019. I'm using the blueooth app as a display on an old android phone. It has been working perfect for the past couple years and it is very smooth compared to the box controller my kit originally came with. I'm using a 1500w hub motor and have pushed it to 3800w on bursts. I keep it around 2200-2300w for everyday use though. Its easy to change parameters on the phone for quick edits. There was something particular about the bluetooth module connected to the VESC that I had to do to get it to connect right with the phone. I dont remember what it was exactly. Some of the generic bluetooth modules wouldn't connect.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 2 года назад
Interesting. I have powered it on but not connected the phone app. I'll leave that to the bench testing. How do you find the refresh rate using a phone as the display?
@Hyprmtr
@Hyprmtr 2 года назад
@@HighVoltageKits the refresh rate fine. Sometimes the voltage fluctuates but it settles quickly. Current is just fine. I’ve compared it to a inline current sensor and it’s spot on. I’m still running firmware from late 2019. There could be some updates but I haven’t checked into it. Actually I haven’t even run my display in a few months. I just get on my bike and go. It’s been perfect.

@Hyprmtr
@Hyprmtr 2 года назад
@@HighVoltageKits I'll have to plug in it and see. I'll do it here in a little while. I have another Vesc and BT module setup I was going to put on my sons bike. His is working fine though with the box controller. I might use it on my small metal lathe with a sensored brushless motor to be able to turn real slow. I'll post the FW I'm using in a little while.
@Hyprmtr
@Hyprmtr 2 года назад
@@HighVoltageKits The FW I'm using is 3.103. It seems the HW I'm using only supports up to that FW but that could have changed I supose. I knew is was quite old from a couple years ago. I'll have to see what changed in the newer versions and see if I really want to update. I'm having zero problems with what I have now.

I had the Tampa VESC 75 300 and loved the firmware and open source part. Sadly, I had so many issues with a big hub motor (qs205). Another friend put one into a Sur-Ron but the 16S limit and 300A phase is just to less for bigger ebikes and anything above. Changed to a BAC8000 because of that. To be fair, I have an ASI login, so I can tune it myself.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 2 года назад
The Sur Ron motor is not an IPM so it is not able to take advantage of some of the newer aspects of VESC such as MTPA. We ran it with a BBSHD without FW and MTPA and it was nothing special. When the advance features are tuned it should be pretty spectacular... Well we hope anyway!

@@michaelwild4337 Hey, the issue was that I didn´t tune the vesc properly for this motor. As I heared, it´s quite difficult to get large outrunners like the qs205 to run smoothly on a vesc but it´s possible! You might look into ASI BAC8000 controller instead tho..

are you supposed to be able to control the motor from the keyboard arrows? I did an autosetup on a 205mm 16 pole BDLC and it says it was successful but the motor makes clunking sounds when you try to go at high speeds with it.

Once you have got pas the initial stage you need to then fine tune. I suggest using the VESC forums to get help here. There are lots of parameters you can tweak to get the best performance.

Motor terminology, please guys... If a motor has 3 wires then it's NOT a DC motor. Just because the power source FOR THE CONTROLLER is DC doesn't mean anything. These are 3phase acim and spm motors. Bldc were first used in quads when we were harvesting motors from cd-rom drives and we never got away from that terminology.

Open source is foolish. In countries where people cannot even decide how many children to have, and where they essentially don't own anything, they understandably don't care about 'open source' rules. Share only with those who sign up to abide and assist. Giving the schematics away for free is just stupid.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 2 года назад
Its an interesting way of looking at things. I don't agree though. Those who don't follow the rules as you say tend to not do very well as they are not really part of the community. The benefit of faster development in my opinion outweighs the risks. Some one will always copy things. People could replicate what we do but we will still do well because it is so much more than just some schematics. Cheers
