I knew the bit I had was too big for Estrid and I could have just bought a smaller one but I really wanted to get an expert opinion on her mouth and what bits would suit her. I had seen Expert bits on RU-vid and I really liked their ethos, the bit designs and how much they seemed to cater for each individual horse.
I have used Myler bits for decades, I like that they don't have that nutcracker action that so many bits have and they offer lots of options. I've prefered the hanging cheek because I like that it holds it's own weight off the tounge so when Lisa from expert bits also recommended I try a smaller hanging cheek I was a little bit pleased with myself that I'd been making the right choice.
We also tried an eggbutt and a loose ring. Estrid didn't like the loose ring and she made that quite obvious, she was better with the eggbutt but seemed a little unsure, potentially because of the slight increase in weight on her tounge. Lisa also said that I didn't need a port, my current bit had a low level port to allow for extra tounge room, but because Estrid's mouth is so small and her roof fairly low and hard it would be better to have a straight bit for maximum comfort.
It's funny how, even though I was on the right track and I knew what I needed to change with my current bit, having someone who knows what their doing gives you that extra bit of validation and confidence in your choices. I feel like when Estrid starts schooling properly in the autumn that I've now got the right bit for her and we can confidently start asking for more contact and communication.
Thanks for watching,
Beth

Beth; I am an Arab lover and owner too, and I have to say - She is absolutely lovely! I like all your horses. We seem to have the same taste.👍👍👍

Absolutely fascinating Beth, I didn't realise there was so much to learn with bits. When I used to ride it was a snaffle or one with a curb chain that was it!!! She was certainly sassy :)

My goodness, Estrid had *opinions* that day. I hope you and she find the best fit out of the test options. I've thoroughly enjoyed watching her develop over the past couple years (I'm abysmal at time frames, so if I'm off on how long it's been, don't mind me lol) and conquer the trails, and she is just so darn pretty. I love her eyes and head the most, I think. She's so lively, but her eyes are just so kind and intelligent. I wish we had consultations like this in my area. We have Reactor Panel saddle fitters a couple hours away, but this is the first time I've ever heard of bitting consultation services. I have to make do with local feed/farm stores and online shopping lol. (As an aside, I love the coat the Consult was wearing [I'm blanking on her name >.>]) I love my Myler 3-ring combo (I believe I got the level 3?) for my stallion. My mare goes in anything. My gelding chews on anything but a Sweet Billy's Leather bit with full-cheeks. Full leather, no wire, steel, or chain core. It's from an etsy shop and the first bit he hasn't chewed to death. (Remarkable, since he loves to chew on anything leather. Makes bridling a cinch since he's trying to grab it in his teeth and ends up getting the bit instead of trying to giraffe his way out of getting the bridle on his head lol) Tried him in a rubber bit and the sound was like sneakers on a highschool hallway floor. That squeaky sound lol He chewed right down to the chain core on that bit. Thank goodness it was only $12.00 USD xD

Oh I remember the squeaky bit sound well. My cob had a rubber pelham! Never again! Haha! x

Hey! I love your videos! You really inspired me to try endurance riding! Also maybe you could do a video about Arab horses, what are struggles and joys of having them, because they look gorgeus but can be a bit hot blooded as it looks 😄

This was so fascinating, thank you!! It's almost time for me to buy a bit for my barely 2 year old, and I've been leaning towards a Mylar. I can't wait to see how the trials go and get your perspective! I've never heard of a service like Expert Bits in the US... though I'm sure there's something like it in FL and CA! 😆
