Over-the-counter pain medicines are not inherently dangerous, but it’s important to know the potential side effects and health risks.
Acetaminophen, sold under the brand name Tylenol®, is found in many pain relief products. Clinical toxicologist Steven Dudley, PharmD, DABAT, describes how to safely take acetaminophen, which can cause liver failure when taken at too high of a dosage for an extended period of time. 
Dr. Dudley is the director of the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center at the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy. He and his team of specially trained pharmacists provide potentially life-saving medical expertise on a variety of accidental and intentional poisonings.

Safe doses are all the way up to 4,000 MG per day but 3,000-3,200 MG is soon to be the new standard. If you take a few tablets a day, you are very much within the safe limits. But please note that this only applies to acetaminophen not ibuprofen.

I’m in rut. I don’t wanna take acetaminophen because all I read about it is how bad it is for you to take , but I’m allergic to ibuprofen so what else is there to take for pain? ( not opioids )

@@JVCKPOTTake NAC when you take Tylenol to keep your glutathione levels up. That will help protect your liver. Large doses of NAC is what they give you in the hospital for Tylenol poisoning, but you can buy NAC over the counter.

I’m a 35-year-old male who has lots of digestive issues. I find that the only way that the melatonin I take to sleep effectively gets into my bloodstream to cause me to get sleepy enough to lay down for bed, is if I combine it with two extra strength Tylenol. I literally have tried everything, and using the Tylenol is the only thing that has consistently helped me with my sleep. My concern obviously at this point is if I am screwing up my liver, but I feel like I’m getting pretty desperate to get the sleep my weary body needs. Any pointers, RU-vid peanut gallery?

I have autoimmune chirossis. My liver doctor allows me to have 4 /500 mg tablets a day. My pain management doctor added 3 / 500 mg of ibuprofen to be taken at the same time as the Tylenol. Here have not added any additional injuries to my liver and my pain is controlled.

I took 1500mg a day for about a month and felt terrible. The real cure for most people including myself is to core and back exercises combined with stretching. 5 days in and my back is significantly better.

If you drink alcohol, you are much more likely to experience liver toxicity if you take Tylenol. It is safer to avoid this drug if you drink alcohol - why take chances? Obviously, never take Tylenol (acetaminophen) for a hangover.
