We even know how to make perfect diamonds of any size in labs now, for about a hundredth* of the market price. The diamond industry is a joke. They are just carbon, which is extremely abundant. There is a reason diamonds were worthless throughout almost all of human history. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians didn't even use them, despite having access to them. They were garbage gems compared to topaz, aquamarine, ruby, and sapphire. Those rocks are actually rare. Diamonds didn't become popular until scammers started marketing them as a wedding tradition. Edit: To further my point, there is an estimated 6.3 billion tons of copper on Earth. But there is quadrillion tons of Diamond.

The Diamond market is a facade.If De Beers (where jewellers ACTUALLY get their diamonds) decided tomorrow to flood the market(which they can) those diamonds wouldn't be worth a loaf of bread.Why do you think it's illegal to own unprocessed diamonds?exactly that reason
