Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng break down the Oscar winners, losers and Ryan Gosling's epic performance on Sunday's 96th Academy Awards. "Oppenheimer" led with seven wins, followed by "Poor Things" with four, including Emma Stone's second Best Actress prize. How did she beat SAG champ Lily Gladstone? It definitely helps that BAFTA came back with a vengeance after going 0/8 above the line last year.

BAFTA ate that up! people calling them irrelevant after one year when they had the same picks as Oscars 8/8 just in 2020 was wild. the short term memory on some people. These things fluctuate from year to year

I'm so glad Cillian Murphy can return to Ireland and a sense of normality. What a champ for enduring the awards circuit the last few months. Let him eat cheese in peace and quiet. He's earned it.

I know you had warned us how awful the twitter discourse would be if Emma won but damn it's even worse than i imagined, I wish I could see the same that that everyone who thinks Lily's Performance is the second coming of Christ saw, she was great but so was Emma and yet some people act like it was a Razzie deserving performance

If there's a better way to spend the Monday afternoon after the late night of Oscar Sunday (it's late for me, I live in Edinburgh) than listening to the two of you talk with unbridled passion and joy about film and the Oscars, then I don't know what it is. Thank you both for what you do. Thank you both for striking a balance between taking awards season seriously without letting it become capital "S" serious. The chemistry you have should be bottled. I had a great time last night - and it wasn't just because of my film-paired-cocktails, although they helped. I thought this was a great Oscar show. Quibbles, sure, we always have quibbles. But the show was slick, the songs were great and - most importantly - the winners were astute. It seemed that the Academy "collectively" paid attention this year and, in my opinion, every coin-flip came down on the right side. The Boy and the Heron. Godzilla Minus One. The Zone of Interest's sound (I'm thinking of adding a new subjective rule to my Oscar prediction rulebook - if something's in the top 2 and feels undeniable and unique, predict it: see Anthony Hopkins). And Emma Stone. Killers of the Flower Moon was my film of the year but what Emma Stone did was unlike anything I've ever seen on screen and, as not a fan of Barbie, I love that this year goes down with a Best Actress winner whose character opened up a deep, sometimes troubling, exploration of female subjectivity in a context of patriarchy. Sorry, this is a bit much for a comment I know but it made me happy - beyond happy. Thank you both. And roll on the next season.

What I learned from this year’s Oscars: 1. The new Globes do have influence. ZOI, AOAF, TBATH and PT got their starts here. 2.Push the film not any particular performance. KOTFM was doing better when it was about the whole film not just Lily’s performance. 3. Passion is important. In VFX they have to care about your movie to want to reward it. 4. Barbie’s “fans” complaining about Gerwig not being nominated really hurt the film overall.

Gonna miss you 2!! My personal takeaways: The Oscars were a near copy paste of the BAFTAs. They got 8/8 ATL and also near full match BTL besides VFX and the shorts. I couldn't brush off the feeling of "Deja Vu" when Boy and the Heron won, then Poor Things went on to win Makeup, Production Design and Costumes. It was no longer a surprise to me when Zone won sound and ended with Michelle calling Emma's name. Also people in the future should pay more attention when it is announced from the start that International voters showed up in record numbers to vote. Just like an election, you can guess the winner early by the early breakdown of demographics of voters from exit polls. I expect narratives to have less and less weight outside of SAG if the trend continues.

Interesting point about the looks of Cillian Murphy vs. Paul Giamatti. PG is a great actor, and Sideways is Payne's masterpiece IMO, but I could never accept Virginia Madsen's character falling for PG's, and I saw Sideways seven times in theaters in 2004. I loved the movie, but no way that's gonna happen. PG's character was a schlub, physically, and a depressed downer. The only thing the two had in common was wine, and that wasn't enough for me to buy it. --Great movie, though.

Billie winning again this year only highlights how much they DID NOT deserve to win for James Bond. I’m Just Ken. The greatest moment (recently). I can’t end my 2024 awards season without mentioning the greatest moment was the 2017 performance of Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” which opened the Oscar’s!! ❤ Great season for both of you!!

Woah, woah - Michelle Pfeiffer is not a VILLAIN in Batman Returns. There are two villains in that film and, come to think of it, where was the other villain, Max Shreck. Christopher Walken was unavailable for the supporting actor presentation? "What, really, you want me - to do an introduction - one of five - like some schmuck - no, this I cannot do - it's unfair, really." (You've gotta really hear it.) But if they got him, wow, we could have had De Niro standing in the audience: "Nicky, no. Nick. Nicky. No." Maybe a bit dark. Jim Carrey would have added value as a Batman villain. One of my favourite Oscar moments is Jim presenting best editing in 1998/99: "... that's all I'm here to do. I have nothing else to worry about. I can just show up and enjoy the parties ... [sigh] ... [applause] ... [tears]." Brilliant. Or Tommy Lee Jones could have grunted the introduction to RDJ, seeing as he reprised his Oscar-winning role as Sam Gerard alongside RDJ in U.S. Marshals. But, no, Sam nailed it! And as for Jack, well the days of Jack at the Oscars are sadly consigned to history. But, my gosh, was he good. From winning in 1997/98 ("I don't know, I've had a sinking feeling all night up to here, there's something about it ...") to the "Whoah" step back after announcing Crash as the winner.

I got 19/23 categories correct and predicted Emma Stone to prevail and happy that u mentioned the globes room when she won there cuz ever since that moment, I was like she’s winning this season. I haven’t seen that excitement for a win in a really long time. I also think Poor Things was peaking during voting whereas Killers peaked a lot earlier and lost its momentum. Stone is very beloved and I think they awarded not only her outstanding performance but they’re also rewarding her for the choices she’s made as an Actor and always pulls thru with craft. She also had the stronger film. She’s also just a natural campaigner, she doesn’t have to try to be liked she just is and comes across that way in most rooms which definitely helps.

I like the acting presenters concept, now the execution... It just did not feel as epic as I think it should have felt. The tone of the presenters was just so inconsistent to me, as well as the way some were friends and others weren't. Also the way they were introduced and the lack of any clips of course. I was also just baffled by some of the choices. I mean, Jennifer Lawrence is nice, but Marlee Matlin was in attendance! Why wasn't she presenting?? Same with Sissy Spacek, who came with her husband (who was nominated). Both looked SO beautiful, I literally screamed the moment I saw them on the red carpet, only to not see either of them presenting Best Actress...

@ella2117
@ella2117 4 месяца назад
@MarcosCorderoBALDO because you ll have all white nominees... so top 3 get an auto nom and the jury of each branch picks the others to have a diverse lineup, that's how Fantasia Barino and the Actress from Rye Lane got a spot, a Teo Yoo who would have otherwise been left out. It allows POCs to have a nomination (even if they don't win because that's why the cutoff is at top 3, usually one of the top 3 wins so it doesn't matter per say most of the time for the winner) on their resume.

And the rest, thot unsure follows the herd in the days leading up to Oscar night. I'm glad tt majority o Oscar voters r voting based on merit n performance, n not history making narrative. Omg, Oppenheimer was a slogfest of men talking to men talking to men in rooms of men, blah, blah, blah. Oh yeah, with one woman in it? What about all of the female scientists who worked on the Manhattan project? Why did Nolan completely leave them out? See Barbie for wise and insightful explanations for this phenomenon.
