In this video, my dog Barney has a good run around on the beach and I take some photos around St Mary's Bay and Dungeness on the Kent coast.
I'm shooting expired film from 2006 in my Mamiya 7 ii with the 135 panoramic adapter kit which allows you to shoot 35mm film in this medium format camera.
Film developed with the Bellini C41 kit and scanned with on an Epson V850 scanner.

LOL! I don’t go out of my way to find expired film either. I just open my cupboard and there it is! Lovely shots of an iconic location. 2nd shot in particular is amazing for its precise framing (lining up the horizon with the top rail). Not easy with a rangefinder.

I was surprised how well the old film performed. I was given a roll of Kodacolor VR 100 film (120) the other day, it expired on 12/1986 and was bought from Coopers for £2.00 originally. I'll save it for a special occasion.

Images turned out quite well. The expired film performed pretty well. Looks like it had good dynamic range for expired film as I didn't see any grad filter use for some of those brighter sky. Thought your compositions of the sunset pictures with the electric towers as leading lines pointing to the sunset was inventive and effective. And Barney is always a joy to watch. He really seems to have a great time when you're out.
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 лет назад
Thanks, yes, there was quite a bit to work with in the negs. The processing was a fairly simple colour correction, a bit of contrast and sharpening. A couple of the wide shots towards the power station had a very subtle grad applied for the sky in Lightroom.

Really enjoyable Craig... from the antics with Barney to the great cinematic looking images - for some reason I kept thinking of spaghetti westerns... not sure if it was the pano style images, the colour renditions or the sparse landscape look from Dungeness? I use the same developer and setup except I have the v800 not the v850. I do as little as possible with the scan, except clean the neg and scan my images 'flat' then I do all my editing in Photoshop. I have over bought my chemicals thinking the bigger box would workout cheaper, but I don’t develop enough colour film to make it worthwhile and ended up throwing quite a bit away. Another brilliant video, very enjoyable indeed, you got some great shots there.
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 лет назад
The last Tetenal C41 kit I bought was a 2.5l kit and I made up 2x1lt and 1x0.5lt. It went a bit over as far suggested storage times go but I managed to get 29 rolls/sheets dev'd with that kit (a mix of 35mm, 120 and 4x5). This Bellini kit is 1lt so I'm probably looking at about 10-12 but we'll see.
@markharris5771
@markharris5771 5 лет назад
Craig Prentis It was actually the Tetenal kit I used, way too big for my needs, I only develop about 2 rolls of 35mm colour and about a dozen rolls of 120 a year. I should keep more accurate records really...and shoot more colour 35mm film. But B&W is so emotional, atmospheric, greater tonal range and you can lay around with different developers etc. Best of all I can enlarge it and play in the darkroom.

Some of the first shots I had to look twice. Brilliant idea to have the handrail just covering the horizon. It made for a very cool abstract. But most of the photos were very good and you made the most out of the landscape. As you said, it really benefits the landscape to give it more room in the composition. All the negative space makes the subjects stand out that much more. Also, having seen people use the X-Pan, this Mamiya Setup should be more flexible, as you can also shoot 120 film with it, right?
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 лет назад
Thanks Marvin. With an xpan, it's dual format and you can choose to shoot either normal 35mm size (24x36mm) or panoramic (24x65mm) on the same roll of 35mm. When you have the Mamiya 135 pano kit installed, you can only shoot panoramic shots at 24x65mm (and no other size) by loading it with a roll of 35mm film. In order to convert it back to a medium format camera (using 120 film) you must take the pano kit out of the camera.

Another clean and very inspirational video Craig, I really like the photo of Barney and the brick structure, especially the vertical. I got a question; on the dusk images when you used the tripod, do you add more time for reciprocity of the film? What’s your take on that? Some films are better at that but regardless, How important is to adjust the esposure time for that? Thanks
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 лет назад
Thanks Alexandra. I didn't plan to be shooting quite so late towards sunset but those last exposures were around 1/4 to 1/2 sec. I wouldn't normally even consider reciprocity failure until over a second. As all films are different, I'd have to look it look it up to see if there is some technical info out there. As these were expired films, it's a bit hit and miss anyway. The camera was predominantly metering for the sky so it did an OK job this time.

Hey Craig, Sorry I havent commented on you rvideos for a little while. Havent been on here much! "Must do better"! I like the pace of this vid again mate and ill tell you what i got from it... In the beginning, when all was quiet with only background noise and you stood and looked for soemthing to take - i was actually trqnsported to where you were and i could intuitively feel what you were seeing and how you felt when you scope for compositions. Cheers Ewan, good to hear from you. It's tricky to know what direction to go in when making these videos. I'd rather keep them as kind of 'following me along on the experience' type thing with quiet moments and natural sounds. You can never please everyone and some people want this and some want more technical explanations. I just enjoy going out with Barney and improving a little each time. I wish the filming was easier and these trips out become quite tricky (as you know) thinking about lots of different things at once. I'm considering taking it further as there seems to be a willing audience and I wonder if there's scope for workshop/tuition type stuff here? Maybe I should put some feelers out?

Thanks, there are some framelines in the finder. I’ll make sure I show how it looks through the viewfinder when I next do a video with this camera.

Craig Prentis oh great. I would love to see how they look. I have a rz67 kit and I’m think of changing

Really interesting video, thanks. I have a Pentax 6x7 and recently bought 3D printed 35mm adaptors...not used them yet, but you’ve inspired me to do so. What brand is your jacket? It looks ideal for photographic excursions :- )

I’ve tried those 3D printed adapters but they just don’t work in this camera. You can’t wind on without the mechanism grinding to a halt. The jacket is a Paramo Velez Adventure Smock. Cheers.

Craig Prentis - Cheers Craig, I’ll proceed with caution! - I’ve only been to Dungeness once and it’s a great place for photography...I’ll definitely be back....and maybe in my new Smock!!!

Do you use filters for your lenses and if so, which system do you work with? I'm looking for filters for my analogue Hasselblad 501 CM. Which do you use?

How do you compose? Does the rangefinder has markings for the panoramic frame?
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 лет назад
There are crop marks in the viewfinder for normal shooting (i.e. 6x7) and also panoramic crop marks too.

How do you metering on Mamiya7 camera (Ver. i and ii , are different?) center weight , spot ???
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 лет назад
It's supposed to meter from an area just below the range finder patch, so just below centre. I believe the meter has a fairly constant field of view so it's more like centre-weighted when using the 80mm, average when using the 150mm but it becomes more like a spot meter when using the 43mm. I find it's best to use AEL, meter for the important part of the scene and then recompose. That way you can set your aperture and the shutter speed will be set by the camera in 1/6 stop increments.

Difficult place to shoot Dungeness, just because its been shot and vlogged so often. Shooting it on expired film probably added to the individuality of the shots in this case.

Nice video Craig! Did you ever had issues focusing with the 150mm?
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 лет назад
Yes, I’ve struggled a bit with the 150mm so far. It’s tricky to focus. Do you have that lens?

@@CraigPrentisPhoto I don't have it! But I was thinking to buy one since I started reading about the focusing problem, and now I am not sure about it. I have the 80mm and I can't be happier. Maybe I will go for the 50! I have the feeling that 43 is extremely wide.

I started with just the 80mm and it's a beautiful lens, as you know. I need to stick with the 150mm for a bit longer as I've been disappointed with the in-focus hit rate and these are static subjects where you are convinced it's dead sharp in the frame. I've had the rangefinder checked and been told it's fine, so how does that happen? The 43mm is amazing. I'm so pleased with it. I'm sure you'll find the 50mm is the same (and a slightly 'safer' wide angle of view).

@@CraigPrentisPhoto Other photographer told me to make sure that the viewfinder is calibrated, but as you said even checking that, doesn`t solve the problem. Maybe it is a manufacturing flaw. It is a shame because sometimes I miss the 150mm, especially for landscapes. Anyway thanks your answer and keep on making videos, I really enjoy your contents.
