The Post Office Bill 2023 has been introduced to amend the 125-year-old Indian Post Office Act. Focusing entirely on the shift from mail delivery to service delivery, this bill is concise, containing only 17 clauses and vision of transformation of post offices into banking service providers.
In the past nine years, there has been a significant revival of the postal institutions, marked by several key developments:
• Between 2014 to 2023 - 5,000 new post offices have been opened and 5,746 post offices are currently in the process of opening
• 1,60,000 post offices have been connected through core banking and digital banking services
• 434 Dak Ghar Passport Seva Kendra have been established, processing nearly 1.25 crore applications
• 13,500 Dak Ghar Aadhaar Seva Kendra have been opened
• Over 3 crore Sukanya Samriddhi accounts have been opened, with deposits exceeding ₹1.41 lakh crore
• More than 3.5 crore accounts, specifically for women, have been opened in The India Post Payment Bank (IPPB)
• 867 Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra have been opened
