Fourthly, on 24th July 1878, Governor of Sulu wrote to BNBC concerning the Spanish sovereignty on Sulu and its dependencies including North Borneo and the termination of the 1878 agreement. Fifthly, Governor General of Philippines wrote a letter on the same matter dated 20th August 1878 to the Spanish Government in Madrid. Sixthly, finally, the issues on the agreement between Sultan Sulu and BNBC and the status of North Borneo was settled through the Madrid Protocol (7th March 1885).
