I am fairly new to upgrading and doing my own maintenance on my mountain bike. It’s fairly difficult to find quality videos that go into enough depth on the basics. This is the first video of yours I have seen and I am very impressed and thankful. I gave a like and I am now subscribed. Thanks again.
Nice tutorial! You might mention you need shorter chain ring bolts since they will be only bolting the one chain ring. You might also mention chain line - it's important you pick the correct side to mount the narrow wide to. Cheers!
Thats right, great advice! I think I have the chain info in another video. The chainring bolt fitting is an issue. Some Raceface rings have the built in spacer but not all.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L2Ad5tWERYQ.html (:
Thanks for the well explained video. Been off the saddle for a couple years. Need to service my suspension/dropper, and now I'm looking at my gears with disdain after seeing my buddies bike.
@@BikeTeacher yeah, he has a 12 speed and loves it. Almost glad that his previous bike was stolen so that he could upgrade... I just priced the Sram options at 400-600ish. I'm looking at my bike(Santa cruz) right now trying to figure out if my forks and rear shock are toast due to years of neglect. I should probably figure that out first before ordering the drive train. They still compress and rebound, but I've noticed more oil seeping from the top right tube at the wiper seal. My dropper post doesn't rebound correctly at all, I need to physically pull it up while depressing the lever. That wiper seal is visually damaged at the top o ring, but it's an older specialized and I don't see any indication of what model it is... stay safe out there, recent robberies in the oakland hills targeting mountain bikers
Ah, back in the day that was stuff! The conversations easy to 1x11, or 1x12. Just pay close attention to the specs. Your frames drop out width is important. Your current hub may only take a 11 Sp cassette.
I’m in the planning stage of switching my 11 speed internal gear rear hub to a either a 11 or 12 speed with single chain ring. This is for a foldable bike of 24” wheels so I can’t really use a long cage so I think a 11-42 would suit me. I’ve used this on long tours loaded with 4 panniers but I need better climbing gear than the 11speed Alfine was offering.
The Shimano M8000 groupset uses a medium cage derailleur for all 1x and 2x (one and two chainring) installations - long cage is only for 3x installations. This group uses an 11 spd cassette [CS-M8000] available in 11-40, 11-42 and 11-46, and derailleur [RD-M8000]. It also only requires a standard Shimano freehub body instead of the new Shimano micro spline freehub (or XD driver freehub in the case of SRAM drivetrains) that 12 spd cassettes require.
The 1x really simplifies riding. Less clutter, lighten up the load and less fuss inside your head not having to deal with two transmissions (derailleurs).
Not a bigger chain but a longer chain. Either install a new chain and measure appropriately or ad a the needed links to your existing chain. Depends on your current chain wear. Har to say how many more links you will need. I clarify one link as a one narrow and one wide. Some people may call this two links.
What if I have a 8 speed shifter and I want to convert to a 1x8 and I have a 11-42T cassette? Will that be possible? If so? What RD should I use with my shifter? Im using a shimano. Thank you so much teacher!
Do you have a 8 speed cassette? 7/8 speeds use the same chain width and shifter indexing. 9, 10, 11, 12 are unique. So you need a rear derailleur, shifter and chain that is compatible with your cassette. You also need a derailleur that has a long enough cage to work with your largest low gear cog.
Keep with a matching shifter and rear derailleur as far as brands go or shifting will be bad. it would be best to have a clutch style rear der. to hold the chain tight to the front chainring. Since you will be missing the front der, the chain will want to come off in bumpy terrain. Unless you have a chain guild in place. I dont know if they make a 8 speed clutch r/d. A narrow wide chainring will help this though.
I don't want to plunge into an expensive bike yet. So i have a K2 base (2007?)dual suspension that was 3x8 and I converted to 1x8 for now and yes I have that flop issues with my chain. Any ideas what might work as an upgrade with a clutch?...budget wise ...1x10? Thanks
Would i be able to run a 9-46 rear cassette with a 46T front chainring on a 1x setup. I am using a shimano slx 11 speed medium cage. Do i have to use a long cage to achieve this goal or do you think i can get away with the shimano medium cage. Thanks for your help.
Use a chain checker tool like the Park Tool CC-4 to periodically look for wear. Depends on ow much you ride, the conditions, mud, dust etc. It is best to change it at .75. I equate that to 75% of wear, do not wait till it is 100% worn, you will ruin the cassette.
I was just looking to get a different 1x chainring and was actually looking at raceface, I'm confused though in the chainring description it specifies its for 10, 11 and 12 speeds. I have an 8-speed though and don't get why raceface would say it's supposed to be used for 10 , 11 and 12 speeds. I mean a chain ring is a chain ring right?
The chainrings are specific thicknesses. Most can run two different sizes. * speed cassette have a lot of space in-between gears so the chain can be very wide. As you add gears like today you have 12 gear cassettes. The chain then needs to fit the tight narrow tolerances. So no, chain rings must be different to accommodate the rest of the system.
Great videos. I am having increasing problems getting parts. Your teaching is fantasic, but if you can't get parts, it gets so frustrating, not in any way your fault. My MTB XC hardtail is based on a Shimano Deore XT M8000. Increasingly Shimano are blocked from buying in another country, even though they are unavailable at home, stuck between a rock and hard place. Is this problem widespread? Does anyone have a really good supplier? Can one get parts direct from Shimano Japan? Likewise with SRAM and Campagnolo from their source countries?
I have an ltwoo a7 shifter for my SLX and i run a 1x11 setup, My mechanic limited my rd to only shift to 1 to 9 and removed the ability for me to shift to the 10th and 11th gear because he told me it might break the derraileur, Is it because my shifter isn't Shimano Slx?
Itwoo a7?? Sram? Shifter and rear derailleur should always match brands due to the ratios need to match. A mismatched system will have poor imprecise shifts.
hey man, im intrested in making my mountain ish bike (i cant recall what it is exactly) have a 1-10 gear ratio so that i can go faster when pedaling. any idea or information on that sort of idea?
I HAVE A TIAGARA 10 SPEED REAR DIREILLEUR AND 11-46TEETH SUNRACE CASSETTE. I NOTICE THE DIREILLEUR MAKES CONTACT AGAINS LAST 2 CASSETTE SPROKETS IF I PUSH IT IN. DOES THIS REQUIRE SOME TYPE OF EXTENSION ON THE DIREILLEUR HANGER?
Can I use my old narrow wide chainring 1x to shimano 12 speed microspine? Is there no incompatibility issue? Can I use 36t chainring on 12 speed 10-51t casette?
I have a Fuji Nevada 5.0 with 3x7, can I change only the chainring to have it with 1x7 with out getting a derailleur with clutch. The bike has a simple low budget parts. Thank you
How do you like your Nevada..? Thinking about getting a 2021 Nevada 1.7. just for a little road riding and a little bit of trail riding. Nothing extreme . Thanks
@@Buckeye_4_Life_ I'm 5.6 tall and the bike is a little taller than me, so l recommend ccheck your height first but the bike is solid for the price. I will buy from Amazon and let a bike shop tune it after you assembled
So im running on a specialized sirrus x a 46t wolftooth oval chainring and a 11-28 rear ultegra cassette its a 11 speed and im riding with guys running 50-34 and 52-36 if i go up to a 48t or if possible a 50 will i be able to keep up on the flats with this guys or thats not gonna happen
Yes, as long as it is 12 speed compatible. My latest video I built my Surly with a GRX 40 tooth crankset and a GRX rear derailleur. I found out the the XT shifter is not compatible with the rear derailleur even though everything is 11 speed.
I like 1X. One it works well performance wise. Two it lightens the load weight wise. Three, removing the front derailleur is elevating a problem that got people in trouble like any rough shift even on accident could bend it break your chain at minimum.
