this cannot just be a broadway fight. scott is involved in 47 upcoming projects, two of which are set to be released this year. he is still making money. he is still in a position of power. a24 pulled back, but other film studios need to.

@@AmyLovatt1 no for sure! i’m the same way, and only learned about scott after karen posted her live on their instagram story. broadway actors are the only ones giving him pushback and since the theatre industry gets much less coverage than the hollywood industry, scott will realistically get off easy. since hollywood only talks when hollywood has to.
@@forevertapes Hollywood is in the middle of this JD and AH stuff, it is easy to see where they are missing this side of this horrible producer. And since Cali is a movie town and not a show town like NYC, UK, Chicago, and San Fransico, it doesn't get as noticed or pronounced unless theres been a full on scandal or accident with a large scale show.
Yes, Sutton and Hugh’s response are not satisfactory, but whose to say that Scott isnt currently manipulating and abusing them. They are the stars of the show; therefore the spokespeople for the show it wouldnt surprise me if scott was in their ears, trying to manipulate them or at least their agents and managers, because the one thing that is abundantly clear is that scott is an evil person and he was the “leading player” in the beetlejuice eviction so i feel like it is a possibility that sutton and hugh might be in a more precarious situation than it already appeared to be...
This is such a good point. I would hope that Sutton and Hugh being the huge stars they are would have amazing teams/lawyers however it isn't unlikely that Rudin could have heard about the article being released from his sources/friends and gotten Hugh and Sutton to either sign a non disclosure/deformation agreement or like you said manipulated/threatened them into remaining silent. Unfortunately we live in a world where regardless of celebrity status, producers are in charge of hiring and firing thus have a lot of power, which is especially worrying with people like Rudin in that position.
We’ve been anxiously waiting for our theatre director to announce next year’s fall musical. Her only hint was that “it involves roller skating” and now we’re all terrified that it’s Starlight Express
100% won't be starlight express. I'm assuming that you're talking about school or a community theatre, the rights to Starlight Express are much much more expensive than most other shows because of the amount of money it takes to produce that show successfully and to the scale the really useful group wants its done. I would assume it could be one of the following shows: -Xanadu -The little mermaid -The Rink (which is a show that should be produced a lot more often than it is)
Re: Karen Olivio/Moulin Rouge. There is a lot of talk that Olivio had already made choice to not return to the show before the Rudin situation went down. They were contacted for a year with the show and had no desire to stay on more than that because they enjoy teaching and their home is far from New York. The pandemic did not matter. One year meant they wanted to be back home full time by July 2020 which has come and gone. Her departure from the show would have been announced whenever the show announced reopening dates. So I can appreciate that they used something that was already going to happen to start a movement for something good. They were like 99% NOT going back to the show with or without the Rudin situation but it helped to set off a chain reaction making everything after possible.
so she knew she wasn't going back and just used it to push her agenda, and make things worse and make us the public feel for her, and for a cause that was a false reason and cause, that proves she isn't thinking of others she's thinking of herself. i wish no ill will or harm to her or her hubby, but that just proved that she's not as for the people as she would like people to think she is. thats a horrible thing to do and use this when you knew you weren't going to go back even if things got better. i'm sorry thats a shitty thing to do. its like AH using the Me Too moment to protect herself when she new she was the abuser all along.
The treatment of the assistants remind me of "The Devil Wears Prada." Always being on call, the unusual and specific demands, the idea that after you work for this person, you can get a job anywhere...
Whilst I wanted Hugh and Sutton to say something and was disappointed with their statements, I understand why they would initially be reluctant to publicly speak out as hundreds of jobs rested on their shoulders, as if they spoke out, hundreds of people would be out of a job
Hey Amy! For the theatery news in my life, I'm in a production of Godspell in my school! We're filming the show onstage and then putting it online for people, and obvi we still have masks on and everything. It's been really hard so far, and there have been some really long rehearsal days, but I think it's going to turn out really great!
In regards to Sutton Foster, I don't think she was saying that posting online about taking a stance is a bad thing, I think she was just worried that if she posted about it online then people would make assumptions that 1) it was just a reaction to the hate she was getting, not authentic and 2) discussions might not be happening behind the scenes, doing it only for show online (as seen by people who posted a black square for BLM rather than actually making change by signing petitions etc). If she had put online that she would not star in the show then that would open the door for people to criticise anything regarding the show, for example if her name was still on the marquee whilst discussions were happening about removing Scott Rudin then people may say that Sutton isn't staying true to her word. I'm glad she has confirmed that she cares and does want Rudin off of the project because the cast and crew of The Music Man should not be punished for the actions of someone else. A lot of time, effort and creativity has gone into the show and so I hope that the necessary changes are being made behind the scene to remove Rudin from the project and find other producers to fill his spot.
Sutton is also likely under contract. While that wouldn’t necessarily prevent her from speaking, it’s unlikely she’d be able to walk from The Music Man without possible legal repercussions.
@@cannotthinkofausername6379 from my friends who were in Cinderella their contracts stated that if they left the show before their contracts were up and it wasn't due to injury or a death or family thing, you would be fined three times your salary for breaking your contract.
I'm just waiting for Broadway shows to start touring again so I can go back to the theater. I miss it and can't wait to support one of my favorite local businesses by buying a season pass.
@@AmyLovatt1 To be fair, if they left or even explicitly spoke out lots of people would be out of a job. It is possible that Scott Rudin and his legal team heard about the news and got to before they could truely say anything satisfactory. Like got there managers to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Also the entire show is partially banking on there star power and if they did anything publically immediatly they would cost a lot of people good jobs. Again I don't hate them, I just wish that producers didn't run everything.
@@shelbymckinney8888 i feel like focusing on individual jobs in this scenario may be a bit short-sighted... for so long, this kind of behaviour and working environment has gone unchecked precisely because people are scared to ‘rock the boat’ including risking individual projects - but, the reality is: - this working environment is unacceptable and actively damaging to so many people who, yes, are simply at their jobs. but complacency now only means that this and future jobs may be really toxic, and i think we need to want more for them. they *deserve* better. - while in the short-term, it absolutely would suck for people to lose their jobs if a project went under, but honestly, projects have failed for far worse reasons than what is, hopefully, being the catalyst of real, tangible change in the industry. - on a broader scale, IF something like this was to cause the whole production to fail, couldn’t that set a precedent that this behaviour isn’t acceptable? wouldn’t it discourage people from allowing people like him to work because, at very least, they’re now a ‘risky investment’ ? anyway, i do hear where you’re coming from, but this is how i feel we could help protect more people at future jobs and ideally prevent these situations from happening going forward
I'm so glad you covered this. I'd been following the story through Karen Olivo and Eden Espinosa's instagram accounts and the videos/articles they recommended. This video brought some new information to me and is a great reference to send to people who want to know what's going on. As to my thoughts on the situation: well, change doesn't come easily, and I'm glad that people like Karen and Eden are standing up and demanding a better work environment for actors. I just really - really - hope that it pays off.
Very glad Karen did this and happy for the March On Broadway. Disappointed in Sutton Foster. Also, why hasn’t Laura Benanti, Seth Rudetsky, Patti Lupone and others not spoke out. Not even called out Actors Equity. A black square in Instagram is not doing the work for change.

so my class wanted to do spring awakening (the play not the musical) but we weren't allowed to because, you know, pandemic, so instead we made an audiobook! at first we were all kind of meh about the idea but then kind of got into it and it was a really fun and emotional (and sometimes kind of, let's say, "odd", if you know, you know) experience, especially for me because it was the first time for me playing a main character ^^ I played Moritz and I gotta say, I already miss him soooooo much! he was one of my absolute dream roles and actually getting to play him, even if it wasn't on stage, was a really cool experience and i think i love him even more now than i already had before (wow my grammar is totally of today lmao)

I feel like there's a lot of things we don't know of that happen behind the scenes on Broadway but maybe more stuff will start to come out after this because people might feel more safe to share their stories. Karen Olivos exit from moulin rouge had been planned since at least 2018. It was known from the beginning of the production that she wasn't planning on staying long term. I was told this by someone who was involved in the moulin rouge production in the early stages
I was just going to say this. You can tell when she did her last interview with aaron and alex that she did not want to be there. I am sure they knew she was not coming back at that point but wernt saying anything. I dont like how she was pressuring her fromer castmates to leave too. Just because it was the right move for her does not mean it is for them.

This hurts my soul so much. I’ve been keeping up with a lot of information and the thing that really upsets me is the boys will be boys mentality that Broadway in general still has but especially the obvious statement from Hugh. He’s just speaking that we should go along with what Scott says because he apologized. I’m sorry but he’s a lot older than me and even I know some people regardless of apologies are toxic, hurtful, and abusive. I mean even Sutton’s bland statement hurts because she also gives the “boys” an opportunity to just run around without reprucussions. I think it hurts most from her because she’s the face of Broadway I’d say. It used to be Liza, Patti, Barbara and she’s the next gen face of Broadway. She should be the one saying it. Speaking out against it. Especially because she has other revenue streams like her 7 season show Younger. It hurts from Hugh but even he does more tv and movies and that doesn’t excuse him but he isn’t a true face of Broadway I say. Hers cuts deeper.
Sutton and Hugh stepping down would have had the best impact. However, given this is an already problemed revival all the other cast and crew would be relying on these two big names to pull in the numbers. Other peoples income would be reliant on their presence even if they themselves are wealthy enough to survive. Personal I would have stepped down anyway because chances are some of those affected would be amongst the cast and crew and I'd rather show solidarity first than focus in income

I'm very interested if the devil's wears prada musical will even happen now/how they try to change and address stuff in the show. I mean in a way the movie Is very much denouncing that type of boss and lifestyle. But like when you watch that movie who do you love? Meryl of course because of how the film is framed. She is seen as badass and such. And I'm sure the musical is going to give her a huge epic villain song (probably like four). Also I think the devil's wears prada is like the worst movie to make into a musical anyway so I hope it just gets canned
i agree! sutton and hugh’s responses were definitely out of obligation more than wanting to actually say something of substance. it just reflects the privileges they’ve had in this industry feeling like they don’t need to say anything because it wasn’t directly affecting them. as for hugh specifically🥴, i haven’t liked him since i discovered what happened with jeremy jordan as well (i’ll protect that man at all costs)
Can we please get over the Jeremy Jordan thing, It could very well have been a studio decision. Also you would be hesistant to if A). There was a good chance you signed a non-disclosure agreement and B). A bunch of peoples jobs are on the line and can be taken away if you are not in the show.

just saying, instead of censoring your language and not being able to easily get the information, please add a trigger warning in the description of content as well as in the beginning :) I think it is pretty good that you did censor it and by cutting the words, I see how that can soften the blow by us not making immediate connections with the word and I do have massive respect and gratitude that you're thoughtful enough to put this into practice, but my suggestion is to still have some of the words uncut. But I don't know if that will have the same effect you want to go for, it's just my idea. Oh, by the way, MickeyJoeTheatre made a really great video on this topic too and it follows the main topic (it was shorter than this) but also touched on the topic of cancel culture and how we should recognise that people deserve better but also focus on the mental health of all people involved, including Rudin, despite his crimes.
The exact same thing that happened to your friend's son's production of To Kill a Mockingbird happened to a production of To Kill a Mockingbird that was supposed to be put on at my community college when I went there. It was absolute BS. It just felt like a weird power trip; we were in Utah how was it possibly going to interfere with his production.
Are you going to do a video on Amar Amsar in West Side Story? Rudin was a producer on the WSS revival and Amsar is a dancer who was fired (but now reinstated) bc he shared nude photos of his girlfriend with other dancers.

To be honest I'm glad she stepped down she was an amazing singer and gorgeous but her chemistry with her "Christian" was zero. Its no wonder people who saw Moulin Rouge with me were kinda shipping Satine/Duke and while I tried to enjoy it... no, I'm gonna stick with the movie. Hell, I was shocked they didn't actually use the Can Can Dancer designs that Baz used I mean the movie goes by so fast I was hoping that I would get to see them in the show, nope just typical can can dancer skirts, well done, but the movie had such a creativity with costumes it kinda flabbergasted me how toned down the girls were. Harold Zidler is perfect though. 🤌 I wish her well and hope that the rest of the year gets better.
Your forgetting that when the Broadway tours across America was touring wizard of Oz, Webber had them shut down mid tour even though they had been touring way before webber was doing his Wizard of oz., so you need to condemn webber for shutting down a production of a tour of Wizard of Oz in the United States just cause he was doing his Oz in the Uk. its what companies do to be sire their version of a story or play or musical is the only one around. And twitter is not at all a reliable source of information since twitter people are mostly following the others who tweet, and twitter is just a full on hot mess since covid happened with cancel culture using it to cancel everything and everyone under the sun. Not saying what happened didn't but just cause people are tweeting about this doesn't make it reliable chatter. Plus people have a right to not like an actress or an actor. i have seen Kelli Olivi in the revival of west side story and in the heights, she's nothing to write home about in my opinion and thats what it is and we have the write to our thoughts and opinions on actors and actresses that doesn't make us monsters. And she was all wrong fore Satin, they should have kept her same way she was in the film and not changed her look and her character.

While she didn’t outright use the words cancel culture, her statement had the energy of people complaining about cancel culture. “Noise on social media” makes it sound frivolous and petty. Calling for an abuser to be held accountable is anything but. And Hugh Jackman continues to be a tone deaf, ignorant disappointment 😑
She didn't mean it like that, She meant that she wanted to say something that isn't based on the social media backlash so that her statement would be authentic, she failed, but I see were she was coming from. Also you don't know the types of contractual obligation She and Hugh are in and how many peoples jobs who could very well be there cast members are on there backs.
