G80 lockers have a fuse plate that shears off when the difference in wheel speed exceed idiot levels. If 1 tire were to spin at a fast rate and it tried to lock the other side, the axle would snap, causing it to come out (much bigger problem) After the fuse plate breaks, you don't have locking anymore but the spiders now work overtime eventually welding themselves to the cross shaft and exploding the diff. You can read about all those abused rear ends on any blog. So, if you have a G80, test it by either jacking up 1 wheel and slowly accelerating (careful cause you'll pull the jack along with you) or drive 1 wheel onto grass while the other is on pavement. SLOWLY accelerate away and if working, the high traction wheel will get the torque.
+sldl04 Ignorant chevy owners. They should know chevy uses cheap ass shit for parts that can't handle even the light abuse like the guy in the video lol.
+TheAmericanUhate the g80 gov lock in the 14 bolt full floater is bulletproof. ive seen a 3.21 geared axle chirp on pavement multiple times by a torquey vortec big block. cheap shit gets made and passed around as legit. Beware.
96TAWS6455 Lol you know they are also called gov-bombs? Even in the 14 bolt rear ends, they are weak. The basket is weak. They stop working after a while and will explode if you abuse them any at all. If you're lucky, they won't bust the differential housing when they explode. I know volvo and GM both uses the G80 gov lock diffs and both has had a lot of problems.
those G80s arent meant to be doing donuts in a feild they are meant for mature people who are in a bad spot and need a bit more traction not to play with!!! ours has never broken and probably never will
So, I just bought a 2013 chevy 1500 z71. One of the first comments i heard, was that i bought a pos, and my drive line will grenade on me. He said it happened to his. Now I know how he did it! Haha.. I love my truck, so far so good anyway :)
will continue to be so long as you dont dog it. everyone who calls these POS's has not taken care of them even the ones with engine oil drinking problems they got that way from lack of regular timely oil changes and research on the vehicle that would've afforded them the technology to disable the the GM VLOM/AFM system with a tuner
@mattmatt115 Yeah it was a good reason to upgrade to an ARB. We actually cleaned out all the broken spider gears and were able to drive it home, some how, in 2wd. Sounded like shit but it got us home lol!!!
I see a few Negative Nellies in the commentator section. Yes, he was hard on the truck, as I'm sure he was completely aware. If he wasn't aware of how expensive that type of driving is, he is now. Lesson learned and no one was hurt. He was horsing around in a safe spot. I did the same as a kid- had a blast and learned a lot. Good way to practice emergency driving, if one can afford it. I don't see a problem with driving on a dry riverbed; spring runoff will fix that.
These trucks are really for family transportation just like the same year f150's. family transportation ! They were never designed top be driven by idiots nor are they idiot proof .
That's a light duty truck never intended for being abused like it was being abused. & If you can not comprehend blowing a light duty rear end apart to the tune of probably a minimum of $1400 then you like him are an idiot.
I've had 4 G80 10 bolt differentials in 4 of my Chevy trucks with no problems. I've done smokey burn outs on pavement, brake torques, donuts in dirt, gravel, snow, ice and never had one blow up. If you're going to abuse them like that, make sure you change the fluid using Mobil 1 75w-90.
I used the Delvac Mobil1 75W-90 the one without any LSD additive (GM manual said no additives) and the rear differential started moaning at low speed 90 degree. city turns. I drained and filled with the specified GM synthetic oil and it took a few days for that rubbing sound to finally stop. Apparently the GM fluid does have some kind of friction modifier.
I had a 2000 GMC extended cab Z71 with a G80 locker 5.3 Last of Me 400,000 miles before I sold it I still see it running around town if you treat it right and use it what it's for they last forever
Anyone who thinks the warranty covers drivetrain breakage has never been asked to prove you didn’t exceed the design limits. Your word isn’t going to be enough by the way 🙂
+Judith 'Tardo Holy SHIT; I'm in love with you!! You tell 'em! Don't hold back!! You said "fuck" in nearly every sentence!! Good job!! -- I was going to say the exact same thing as you. Some people are such dumb-asses that they don't deserve to have anything. Btw, I LOVE it when people call idiots RETARDS!! LMAO
I hope you picked that up... in the last 2 years since you posted this comment i bet we've had enough advances in medical tech to where you could have it sewed back on good as new. just try to hold back a little next time, if you have to laugh something off that's what an ass is for.
Well you didn't lock the g80 and accelerated at high RPMS. When you use a tool for its indented purposes it lasts a long time. This guy should read his manual.
I have an 02 Blazer ZR2 4x4 w/ the G80 300,000 miles & love it. It's a great locker & locks up hard! Very low speed. They are like $500! I didn't even know I had one in mine until I pulled the diff. I seen the codes in my glove box but I had to verify. Very little metal shavings also.
I can do the same thing with the new set up you have. You can do that with anything, anything will fail eventually. Anything! But mine does weird stuff all the time, locks up now and then and wont free.. But it is what it is , good rear for regular driving.
I mean feel free to drive like you stole it like that, that's fine. Yet be prepared to pay for it, even racers realize what they are doing on the track means parts are going to prematurely wear out an they will have to replace them early. This is just known fact.
Lesson learned for him.. Now go buy an actual locker.. Not some lsd that restricts u to low speed spins. It's meant to be babied.. Which off roaring isn't.. Go watch TFL where they try to go up a gravel pay and the g80 keeps overheating and disengaging lol.. Junk.. Just buy a locker
My homies '80 suburban has a 3.21 ratio 14 bolt full floater behind a carbed vortec 454/th400. Truck weighs 5100 lbs dry. He punches the throttle too hard sometimes and chirps the tires for about 2 seconds on PAVEMENT and his shit hasn't blown up. Hes done this multiple times. The guys truck in this vid must have had an cheap ass chinese knockoff unit. Str8 up. Ive never heard of a locker unit exploding on a loose dirt/gravel burnout. I knew a guy with a Powertraxx unit who did this alot and his rear never gave out either.
I've got a g80 in my s10 (it's a 7.6 rather than an 8.6 though) and I tried launching it to see how fast it would accelerate and I blew the locker. Now when I spin the tires it grinds really loud. Hopefully swapping it to an 8.6 here next week
@Hickey2500 We ook out all the broken spider gears and were able to drive it back home. Then we installed and ARB air locker in it, better than new now!
@GMCman82 You could use the whole axle but doing that forces you to swap the front on as well since you need the same gears front and back ,i did miss match my ford diff from on with a different bolt pattern but it took me 6 hours of work to accomplish a one hour job ,but thats the only one he had and i had time on my hands but i dont recommend it . but lockers all do the job if you dont abuse them ,the G80 locker works with a centrifuge and cant be abused the way he did!
was driving home and heard a pop lost all power to the wheels after inspecting it figured hey pop it in 4wd and drive home. got 1/2 mile down the road my passenger side axle shaft was out of the axle hosing and it seemed like i had a dually. had the tow truck take me home p.s i have a 1999 GMC Yukon Denali 4x4

@GMCman82 Ya man i get you ,it hard to keep anything working on a 4x some work on the brake system now and i think its a better deal the computer brakes the wheel thats spinning ,at least with the Chevy Z71 you get a locker already in so ill give you that ,the G80 is ok if you work it the way its supposed to !
Got one in my 99 escalade. It blew up once because I was a dumbass. Normal driving there fine. Works great in ice and snow. Don't need 4x4 unless there's more than 6 inches.
One of the many reasons I have a hard time buying a gm truck. I would much much rather have a selectable diff lock. Heck I’d rather have a limited slip than a g80.
The guy is peeling out in dirt and everyone is shitting their pants thinking that is horrible abuse, and the guy should be stoned to death in the town square. You all must 80 years old drive caprice classic station wagons and think and driving over 55 is hardcore.
For real... calm down, dude wasnt doing anything wrong. this is what happens when you let old amish guys post youtube comments. they think horse power is the number of horses pulling their wood carriage.
Low speed traction devices aren't meant to do burnouts. Have fun intentionally destroying your truck I suppose, I'll keep mine running by not acting like an angry high-schooler.
Ford's don't break? Lol my Ford is a POS. Left me stranded 5 times now. The cooling system seems to be underbuilt for the amount of heat the truck creates. Still a fun truck to drive! Just my .02
