Ilfracombe is a small town and district in central western Queensland, 660 km west of Rockhampton. It’s located on the Landsborough Highway, between Barcaldine and Longreach. The town dates from 1891, when the Central Western railway line from Rockhampton reached there. At the 2021 Australian census, the population of the town and district was 310.
My husband and I visited Ilfracombe on three occasions recently - in 2017, 2019 and 2020. During these visits we spent time exploring the town and inspecting its main historic sites and displays. In so doing, we gained an insight into the remarkable history of the town and district.
There is certainly much to see and learn about this so-called “Hub of the West”. Ilfracombe, Queensland, is really worth a visit.
