1877 TALL SHIP ELISSA, 2200 Harborside
The 1877 Elissa is a square-rigged iron barque, brought to Galveston from a scrapyard in Piraeus Harbor, Greece, in 1978. This rare, historic vessel is a floating museum that actively sails today. In fact, she is one of only three ships of her kind in the world to actively sail. Elissa welcomes more than 40,000 visitors annually and serves as the Official Tall Ship of Texas. She remains a symbol of the Gulf Coast’s historic beginnings as a seaport and active waterfront.

My baby! I worked in the ticket booth & occasionally the gift shop & was so very fortunate to sail on her in 84 & 85 before they fitted her with the engine to go to the gathering of tall ships you mentioned for the 100th anniversary of the statue of liberty I believe. Below decks I barely recognized her until you got to the officer quarters. She's amazing to see even dockside so don't pass up the chance to see this fabulous ship. But to be aboard her under full sail was indescribable & something I'll never forget. We had amazing times with the sail crew dockside, especially during Dickens on the Strand, with the wassail flowing, crawfish boils & singing sea shanties at the top of our lungs. Truly a special time in my life that I will always treasure.

Wow,. What a great bit of boaty history that I'd know nothing about if it wasn't for you . Awesome job, thankyou, . It's great to hear more Americans making sense on the internet nowadays too, so, thanks again. Brilliant photography, brilliant story.
