You think life is tough now? I wonder what you'll think after watching my video on Laurence Stephen Lowry. English artist L.S Lowry was born on 1st November 1887 in Manchester, in northern England. Lowry was an outsider and a loner who suffered from Asperger Syndrome, a jovial, self-effacing individual, who was often depressed and very lonely. He never married, found relationships almost impossible and the London art establishment never took him very seriously. From childhood Lowry loved drawing and doodling, but as far as his mother was concerned there was simply no question of him being allowed to be an artist. In 1905 he was an evening student at Manchester School of Art and was inspired by the French tutor of drawing, Adolphe Valette. The 1930’s were a struggle, he had no emotional support at home and despite numerous exhibitions in Canada, Paris, Manchester, he sold very few paintings.
L S Lowry was 52 when his mother died. He stayed in the same house, alone and lonely for the next 9 years. It was his sanctuary, full of cobwebs and splattered paint.
By 1948, he was earning good money as a painter, so he moved house to the affluent village of Mottram-in-Longdendale, near Manchester. In 1976 he was given a one-man exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. This was a major achievement, as very few living artists are given this accolade. But he died on 23 February 1976 six months before the show opened. It was a major success and was one of the most popular Royal Academy shows of the 20th century.
He was famous for his ‘matchstick men’ paintings. A large collection of L S Lowry paintings can be see at The Lowry, in Salford, Manchester.

What a sad tale of emotional abuse. The only redemption is that nonetheless he followed his own way and persevered and, even if he did not see it, be was an immense success. So sad or not, it is a happy tale as well. Thank you. His paintings and drawings were a pleasure.

I agree, but it could be that his mother was also on the spectrum and didn't/couldn't understand the needs of an Asperger Syndrome child. We shall never know.

Thank you so much for this wonderful over view, Lowry has a special place in my heart! I was born in Manchester in the 50's but spent a lot of my life living between Australia and New Zealand. Back in the seventies I was working and living in Manchester and my Grandfather who was a Mancunian took me to see some Lowry paintings, I loved them. many years later I did my Arts Degree in Perth Western Australia, I married a man from Salford, he too was a Lowry fan, this Christmas Day past we both watched the Movie of Lowry, it was so heart wrenching but so well done. . Two days later my husband passed away. It was the last movie we enjoyed together. I will always be a Lowry fan and over the years teaching art I always introduced my students to his work. Love your posts keep up the great work, they are so well done and very informative, thank you, Lowry fan living in NZ

Very interesting. From the beginning of his work I see lots of sadness, loneliness and isolation in his figures, even, when they are in a group. Later in the 20´s I see a strong influence of Art Déco (Reminds me of Tamara de Lempicka). The group paintings - with very dark figures on the white background remind me of the work of the czech painter Josef Lada - although the theme is totally different, I am talking about the contrast of the colors. The painting "The Head of a Man" looks to me like his self-Dorian-Gray-portrait. Thank you very much, for introducing us to this interesting painter. Btw. your style needs to be acknowledged, how you always dress up for a specific theme. You are an original! Thank you very much!

I know a lot of my paintings are good, others not so good, I am always learning and drawing and painting, some look like a kid did it. Some have improved. Anatomy is so hard. So I fall back on my stick figures. I did the shooting of George Floyd and others because if they were anatomically correct people wouldn’t like them so I do stick figures scenes, , people could be more detached looking at them.

Amazing how the human spirit can find a way to somehow survive even when surrounded by such negativity as Mr. Lowly experienced. How important family support can be. Thank you for such an informative documentary of Lowry’s life richly illustrated with so many images of his work. While on my first and only visit to Tate Britain I saw one of his paintings. At the time I was charmed by the unusual style which conveyed such a sense of busyness and movement of the many figures within a stark urban setting. In it’s primitiveness, it reminded me of an urban version of a Grandma Moses* painting. For years I regretted not making a note as to the painter’s name. Fortunately, due to more recent public awareness of his work and wonderful presentations such as yours, his name is well known to me now. (*Anna Mary Robertson Moses) Thank you for this wonderful series about the artists’ lives beyond their creative output.

It's so sad, so many artists and dreamers, have so much to give and knowone to give it to, preferring rather to live in isolation and solitude. Ultimatly at least, this is the only reality that seems to make sense, why waste your time and energy throwing freshly cut roses on a fire. This is the main reason, why so many creatives suffer from depression. So many higher skills of communication, a heightend perception, but only a tiny audience are able to see, to interpret and share their depth of vision and appreciate their individual gift of communication. 50 years or so down the line, the masses then understand, too late the artist had passed! In L.S. Lowry's case if his own Mother couldn't see his brilliance, then what hope had the rest of the viewing public?

Thanks Paul, this was a really interesting video. I grew up in Manchester but never really asked the question who Lowry was and what was special about his paintings until now. It sounds as though he had a challenging life, like many artists do. I wasn't aware that he suffered from Asperger's Syndrome. I think that kind of comes through in his paintings. As you mentioned, he was an outsider who loved to observe other people, but was never part of the activity. I think that is quite a common complaint in people with that type of Autism. I will definitely be looking into more of his work and life now!

Think how much better his life would have been if his mother had "accidentally" fallen down four flights or stairs.

He would then not have had anyone to impress, which was very much his driving force for 50 years.

L.S Lowery is my favourite artist 🎨 ❤ 💕 I saw Mrs Lowery and Son. Starring Vanessa Redgrave and Timothy Spall. I ☺ enjoyed the film 🎥 but really didn't like Lowerys 😕 mother 😕 😢. I despised how her snobbery casual cruelty of her son.

Hello Paul Priestly, Just found you. Love your presentations. Well done history especially the angst the artist goes thru not appreciated. My husband had Aspberger Syndrome and it sounds like the same concerns and interests as Lowry. God gave him a long life from 1897-1976 he must have seen such a change in Society. Very interesting~Thank you very much, Mrs. Ana. I will follow your Facebook page~Good day, July 16,2022AD.

I discovered his work accidentally after watching the Timothy Spall movie “Mrs. Lowry & Son” - As an engineer and draughtsman from the days of pen and ink, I was struck by the way he distilled buildings down to geometric form with few details and yet introduced a level of depressing misery I was familiar with growing up in the industrial North of England. Spall’s movie on Turner is also worthwhile watching. Very much enjoyed your video, thanks for taking the time to produce it.

I only discovered Lowry recently, sort of peripherally... and then, when watching Landscape Artist of the Year, Kate Bryan mentioned him (comparing a painter's style to Lowry) and, although I didn't know his name, I knew immediately who she was talking about and looked him up. I was delighted to find that the image (of the painting) I had in my head matched the name ... and became immediately smitten with his work. It makes me so sad that he didn't know just how wonderful he was/is. Thank you for covering THIS Artist!! I so enjoyed this particular episode.

When I went to a girls school & famous works of art were borrowed for the assembly hall such as Lowry & Breugal . We were the baby boomers grammar stream & had a more culture heritage & creative approach eg drama & dance .It is interesting the extra detail & Manchester connection & was influenced by the Pre raphaelites William Morris designers & way of living .Charleston Sussex too " Hurt no living thing !" At 9:14, there stands Lowry attired in a suit with what looks like paint all over it. That is interesting to me because just this week I was learning about Jean-Michel Basquiat, who liked to paint while wearing an expensive suit. To me, it's suit abuse, lol. Anyway, I really like the way Lowry draws his people & the fact that he includes little dogs & baby buggies into his crowds.
