Join me in Bakersfield, Ca as I spend a day riding across the full length of the Kern River Parkway Bike Trail!
Bakersfield is just under 2 driving hours north of DT Los Angeles and represents the far northern border of "Southern California". Opened in 1971, this 6,000 acre bike path loosely follows the shoulder of the Kern River for a continuous 30 mile one way ride. Allowing riders to travel from the outskirts of Bakersfield in the west, through downtown to end just outside of the beautiful Lake Ming on the north eastern side of the city.
This trail is a standout for the city of Bakersfield and holds firm as the premier Class I path within the borders of Kern County. If you aren't local to the city I'd recommend taking the days drive to this location to simply experience this worthwhile bike path. You wont be disappointed!
Thanks for watching!

Bring Back the Kern!
The 130 mile Kern River cuts through a pristine wilderness and channels through DT Bakersfield. Its headwaters are at around 12,000 feet in Sequoia National Park, just outside of Mt. Whitney, the highest mountain in the lower 48. While the first 100 miles of the river are full of water and flow through pristine wilderness, the final 30 miles of the lower river are bone dry.
People are trying to get water back in the Kern River! Due to droughts, climate change, government controlled water re-routing issues a large majority of the lower Kern River is completely dry. However, This wasn't always the case! Organizations like bringbackthekern.org are advocating on behalf of the river to help restore its waterway through downtown to recreate the flowing river that was a beautiful feature for the city of Bakersfield through to the 70's.
Be sure to check out bringbackthekern.org for more information and how to get involved!

Hope you have the chance to see the trail now. So much water everywhere!!! Even from the parking lot on Enos Ln. Thanks for showing me the end. I got to the underpass where the incline starts and turned back.

Great to meet you at the your start area that day. . Well done video especially the drone shots! Where you saw that water along the bike path it wasn't the Kern river though that was still a canal...haha. Riding that path for 35 years. The squirrel running across the path has its own Strava segment called the Kamakazi squirls. Once the bike path is complete to Buena Vista lake then you can go from lake to lake. Thanks for coming all the way out to do the video.

It was great to meet you as well Mike! Ahead of recording the video I remember you gave me some good tips about the ride. So thank you! And thanks for the clarification about the river! haha. I really enjoyed my time in Bakersfield. The parkway trail was the standout for me. But downtown was cool and the city has some really good restaurants around. It's a great place! Once the path is extended all the way to Buena Vista Lake I will definitely be back! I'm happy you found the channel! -Andrew

Great video. I'll be in the area next March for the Blossum Tour ride in Reedley (hopefully it won't get cancelled again) and plan to stop in Bakersfield to try out this path.

@@TrailsofCalifornia I rode it on 3/7 from the parking lot at Enos to just past Hwy 99/58 for a little over 30 miles round trip. A nice flat and smooth trail very open and uncrowded. I don't think I'd like it in the hot months since there's very little shade. A few homeless camps but that was expected. The American river trail in Sacramento/Folsom is better in summer since there's more trees and shade. Plus the river actually has water in it (well, usually anyway).

@@johnburwell6609 I am so pleased that you made it out there! And remembered to share your update here! Yes, I totally agree that during summer the heat would be a complete killer. You had a great ride it sounds like. Thank you for responding to the comment and for watching this channel. I was very excited to read about your experience 🙌

@@TrailsofCalifornia Forgot to mention that the 5 mile (one way) extension to Lake Buena Vista is complete and open. I didn't know when I was there, if I had I would have tried it out.

Just past Ethel's Corral Cafe, hang a right on Fairfax and going under Alfred Harrell Hwy, make a left onto the on ramp. You'll avoid those inclines and have only one hill that is manageable and certainly easier than the ones you climbed. Great video.

Great overview of the trail. You make it easy to see where you need to go to follow the trail from riding on the street. I was curious, however, how you got back to your vehicle, since you were alone.

Well the idea was to film one way then ride all the way back in the opposite direction for a round trip. But filming this vlog took longer than anticipated so I used Uber. I took the wheels off my bike and the driver was nice enough to transport me back.

There’s been adamant efforts this year to refill the River both for ecological reasons as well as to restore our water table and tourism. Thanks for visiting! Check out #bringbackthekern Best time to come is after rain season when there’s more greenery.

Definitely outside of the heat of summer. October was a nice month when I filmed this vlog. Anytime between October and March the weather is pretty nice in Bakersfield!

Hey Andrew - here's some feedback for your consideration regarding your editing. With the popularity and growth of e-bikes, maybe consider noting in your videos what the e-bike policy is for the trails you are reviewing. I know where I am in AZ the local e-bike policies vary by local jurisdiction ordinances, with some overriding federal laws such as ADA exemptions. Maybe a single video noting the trails you've reviewed that do allow e-bikes would be of value to e-bike riders? I know you already try to pack in a lot of information in your vlogs though, so I get it if you think that'd be overkill. Keep up the good work. - Bill

Love this path and those squirrels are crazy. How did you get the drone shots while riding?
@TrailsofCalifornia
@TrailsofCalifornia 2 года назад
The drone shots are a challenge to set up but I will stop my ride at points I find interesting. Pull out the drone, set It in the air, let it follow me for a minute or two and then land it in the spot I ride to.

I grew up cycling in Bakersfield and I lived around mile 8 it was so nice being able to just hop on the bike path to get literally across town and getting decent views the whole time. Sadly it’s not exactly safe if you are drinking downtown and have to ride back to “the 8 mile” 😅

Well Done TOSC! I was not aware of this path. It looks like a nice rural ride with little traffic. I don't remember seeing you ride a drop-bar bike in your other videos. Did you get a new ride, Argon or ? - Bill

Great observation! This was the first time I've used this bike in a vlog. It's my "other" bike that I typically only use for riding (outside of youtube recording). My original bike had a rear rack that could carry all of my recording gear + more for Vlogs. It was perfect! Well, the short story is that I don't have that bike anymore, hah! Maybe I'll tell that story one day! For now I have to use the drop bar bike and just carry less recording gear on my vlogs until I figure out a new solution. A little more difficult but I have a system that works!

What does Class 1 mean? No e-bikes? Great video btw!
@Roboprogs
@Roboprogs 9 месяцев назад
Class 1 = max 20MPH assist, no throttle (pedal assist only) 2 = throttle (max 20) 3 = max 28 MPH (no throttle) So, class 1 is like a normal motivated human who doesn’t get winded easily 😁
