I visited York Minster some years ago. I was very impressed. Also I'm nearly sure that cobh cathedral in cork has a carrilion of bells.

This is *not* the only church with a carillon: Riverside Church in NYC has SEVENTY-FOUR bells, and the largest has a mass of Fourty-thousand, Nine hundred and twenty-six pounds (40,926), and a note of C0, for Pete's Sake!!

Amazing building! Couldn't afford the tour but it's great from the outside. I think it was £10 to tour or £15 to see the tower also. Free to go in just to pray. By the way next door is a wonderful church with a great service. I would strongly recommend it too :)

During 1983, I delivered a parcel to the shop, within York Minster. My 15year old son Mark travelled with me and as we left the minster via a side entrance, my son Mark gently up an old lady, who had fell down but fortunately she was not hurt by her fall.

What a joy to find this video of the Minister and hear those bells. My family lived in York for 60 years. I was 7 when we arrived. I attended The Bar Convent and walked on the walls to get to school. After my Mum died I was in York with my young sons. The day after her funeral at St. Wilfred's I walked with them up Stonegate towards the Minster, it was February and snow was falling but when the Minister bells rang out I felt a great joy which I still vividly remember.

I have been there yesterday, you have to pay £10 to go in and £5 to go on the tower. Pretty pricey but it's nice. You should be respectful when you go in though as yes, it's a sacred and religious area.

I love going to York in North Yorkshire many times for a day with my parents awesome places and passions and that's were are the friendlies people from around the world

Actually the heaviest bell in britain is Great Paul at 16 3/4 Tons

We saw the carillon when we sang there, but there are several places where you can find carillons. The Netherlands used to have several standalone carillons and even American universities have them, too. Butler University has a nice one and Indiana University also has one. Neither is attached to a church building.

10.75 tons? I'll call bullshit on that. I don't care how many times you pull the rope with only that much leverage, you're not going to get that much iron swinging that far. If that bell is 21,500 lbs of iron, then that wiring on the beam in front of it must be a couple inches in diameter judging it against the bell and how "tiny" that rope you're supposedly pulling on is. That pulley would also have to be about 10 feet in diameter to pick you up that far off the ground on a "half stroke" of the bell, which is what would be occurring since you're only going up as it rocks from center fully in one direction and then you're coming down to center and falling more coming past. And if the rope were as big at the pulley as it is at the "ground", that pulley probably would be 10 feet in diameter based on scale alone. But whoever rigged that tiny 1/4" or maybe 3/8" rope at the most AT THE PULLEY didn't do much of a job of rigging. Because its only looped over the top and then down over the rim and round the nearest spoke before being pulled back toward the rope side of the pulley and wrapped and tied off at another spoke. Big rope doesn't wrap and tie off that smoothly and invisibly. When big bells have full pulleys its so the rope can loop completely over and form a "belt" or at the very least two ends at the bottom so two people can share the work. You don't do that much work single-handedly just to get a huge bell going to ring once or twice.

Great Peter is not the heaviest bell in Britain. Great Paul of St Pauls Cathedral in London is. However Great Peter is the largest manually rung bell. Great Paul which wieghs in at 16 3/4 tons is rung electrically but used to be manually rung
