A film from Mark Beaumont & Markus Stitz, ‘Explore Your Boundaries’ was inspired by the desire to create adventures close to home, a way of seeing the familiar in unfamiliar ways. Mark Beaumont, Guinness World Record holder for the fastest circumnavigation by bike, and Markus Stitz, singlespeed round the world cyclist and filmmaker, mapped 24 Scottish council boundary routes to encourage people to stay active, whether cycling or walking, and to inspire adventures that started and finished at their front door. To create the routes, they uploaded the council boundaries GPX files onto the mapping platform Komoot and matched them with the closest existing pathways. This ‘Explore Your Boundaries’ documentary captures four adventures in Clackmannanshire, East Lothian and Falkirk, undertaken from June to September 2021, and Glasgow, undertaken during COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference, in November 2021.
The routes can be downloaded at bikepackingscot...
Subtitled in English and German.

What a great inspirational film exploring places by bike, even if it is just round the block is the way to do it.

Hi Jim, thanks a lot for watching and the feedback. That exactly is what inspired us to make this film. There is so much good riding around Scotland, but I really loved the contrasts on those routes. Hopefully more in 2022.

Brilliant film, perfectly captures the spirit of adventure! Some of the best days on a bike are breaking from the familiar and just following a route, not knowing what is coming next! More videos please 🙏🏻

Hey Chris, thanks so much for your feedback, glad you liked the film. And there is another one in the editing suite as we speak, this time travelling to Argyll's islands. And we are hoping to ride a few more boundary routes in 2022 too. Thanks for watching!

@@reizkultur Bute is great to cycle around, I moved from Devon 5 years ago and I call Bute ‘Devon on an Island!’ Done it a few times from here in Dunoon. Mark B and Hank LW with GCN did a programme gravel cycling on Islay and Jura 👍🏽 If you want a hand on Bute give me a shout👍🏽

Great film and concept! Years ago I used to work outdoors in the Ochils and commuted by bike/train from Edinburgh so I'm glad to see a film shining a light on the area. In fact it was during this time that I once met Markus on a train back from Stirling to Edinburgh. There were never many people bringing a bike on that route so I often got talking to the few people who did on my journey. I remember Markus had a bike laden with bikepacking bags and at the time (probably around 2014) I hadn't seen such a set up as bikepacking hadn't really gone mainstream yet. Keep up the good work, creating and documenting routes!
@reizkultur
@reizkultur 2 года назад
Wow, and I fondly remember the commute. That's why I was really chuffed when we were back, taking the train from Waverley at about the same time I normally took it in the morning. I have also included a route in the Ochils in my Great Gravel Rides Britain which is currently being edited, so looking forward to have that out too. Thanks a lot for watching!

Thanks Steve! More eclectic music choice this time, which fitted with the rides. That’s a great idea, and exactly what would be great to see. We were amazed how much of an adventure we had on those rides.

Lovely film - I recognised many bits of it from my cycle trips last year when I cycled the John Muir way with my kids West to East and down to Berwick. Then loving the views so much, I came back and solo'd Dunbar back across to Edinburgh and up to Perth. I just wish I had more free time and it was closer so I could just impulse ride more around there!

That's fab to hear Terry! We are hoping to either ride the Angus or Perthshire boundaries this year as well, which will be a challenge.

Oh I do look forward to seeing that for more ideas then! Whilst I sheltered in the Dundee Cycle hub after a rather wet ride from St Andrews - I grabbed some of their freebie maps of the area for the next time I'm in the area. I'm sure one way or another I'll be back around there!

Brilliant film and really captures some of the great routes you can do on a gravel bike with a bit of imagination and map research! Hopefully you do SLC boundary? Loads of gravel bike routes here to choose. Same with East Dunbartonshire too. D&G would be another excellent one to do. 👍
@reizkultur
@reizkultur 2 года назад
Hi Greig, thanks a lot for your nice feedback. Dumfries and Galloway is on the ideas list, and I would love to do South Lanarkshire as well, as it looks like gravel heaven. I have almost finished my book about gravel rides in the UK, and D&G will be featured in there, and some more lesser known places in Scotland.
