An incredible tale of how starving explorers accidentally taught us the A, B, C of nutrition; told with facial hair and rhyme. AS ALL GREAT STORIES SHOULD BE.
This was my first video made with help from someone who knows what they’re doing! Many thanks to ‪@DomBurgess‬ and Standard Studios for transforming my flat into these exotic locations.

Unfortunately, scurvy is still a relatively common disease amongst guinea pigs being fed with rabbit food. Rabbits (like most other animals) don't need vitamin C in their food, guinea pigs do.
@thorr18BEM

Because they're defective, like humans and fruit bats. The other animals make their own. Our gene got deactivated which did the final step of the recipe for vitamin C. We go to the trouble of making the precursors but then just forget to put the soufflé in the oven.

@seraphina985
@seraphina985 2 года назад
I would assume mostly just by observing that people that do or fail to do certain things seem to go on to get sick, then just teaching their offspring that doing or failing to do those things is harmful. In that respect not much different to how in cultures that still make use of copper cookware parents still warn their children not to prepare acidic things etc in them. This information has been passed down in those cultures for centuries long before anyone figured out exactly why doing this actually makes people sick. That is to say you can still learn a lot by observing outcomes even if you don't understand the connection although of course you can be led up the garden path by the correlation is not causation fallacy. The latter is why old common knowledge is such a mixed bag sometimes the right connections were made other times not so much and myths and superstitions were born.

I dislike how many criticize seafarers for "forgetting" that fresh fruits prevents scurvy. And how the solution is deemed simple. Imagine planning a 3 year long voyage and being told to "just bring fresh fruit" most of which will rot within weeks without the modern convenience of refrigeration. It simply wasn't practical to carry fresh fruit. The gap was likely due to a lack of preservation techniques, as many fruit preserving techniques in that era used heat which destroys vitamin c. I feel that the invention of methods to preserve such vitamins such as in fermented sauerkraut and concentrated lime juice is not given nearly enough credit.

Fantastic as always. How far we have come from those nights in your office eating cold pizza.

Loved this video 😁 Rohin please could you give us an evidence-based run down of why we don't need to take supplemental vitamins / daily multi-vitamins ?? It may be obvious to you but specialists and experts are always saying we should be taking vitamins, then you find super high dose vitamins in every store - help us understand ??

I see you got as much mileage out of the Great Facial Hair Deforestation as you possibly could ...

Man, I can handle the accents, I can handle the acting practice, but the rhyming/poetry have to stop. 🤨

So, just speaking theoretically, how many of us have to sign up to Nebula for you to promise to never attempt a Scottish accent again?

Any excuse for fancy dress. It’s the only reason he became a doctor. It was either that or bee keeping.

Considering how poorly most attempts at an Aussie accent fare, not too shabby, mate.

Many years ago (well before internet scammers selling vitamins online) my then young adult cousin feel ill while her parents were out of the country. My mother lived in the same city and was called to the hospital where the doctor said they have no idea yet what is happening to the cousin. The cousin asked Mum to get some things from her bedroom and when she got there she found a tray on the bedside table stacked with many many many bottles of vitamins and supplements. Mum scooped it up and took it to the doctor. Suddenly, there was the answer. My cousin had poisoned herself with a heavy cocktail of every 'cure' for ailments she heard about and so believed she might be suffering from.

I would rather die of starvation than eat a loveable dog - on the other hand, I'd probs be cool eating humans.

Only started taking vitamin supplements after the pandemic started. Wonder if I should stop after the current bottle runs out.

I swear, the only thing that keeps us away from frequent videos is that he needs to grow a beard for every video. ... And of course, the quality of the videos. But mostly the beard.

Not only that, he had to regrow it between the first and second segments. ;)
