Exploring Abandoned Valerie Jean Dates & Shields Date Gardens

California's Coachella Valley is probably the date capitol of the United States. A big reason for that is the former Valerie Jean Dates and Shields Date Gardens.
Valerie Jean was the first to market dates directly to consumers, and their roadside stand is credited with popularizing a lot of the ways dates are enjoyed today. Located in Valerie, CA, which is near Thermal, the V Valerie Jean Date Shop was a popular stop on Highway 99 for over 50 years. Long since closed, the building is listed as California Historical Landmark.
About 11 miles away from Valerie Jean on Highway 111 is Shields Date Gardens, which has been at its current location since the 1950s and is an extremely popular attraction in Indio, CA. Shields farms have been around nearly a century, and their date gardens features a restaurant, gift shop, a 17 acre garden, and a theater dedicated to showing the film, The Romance and Sex Life of the Date.

When I lived in Riverside, I took my family to the Indio Date Festival, a late winter County fair. Nice summary video of the area.

@@SidetrackAdventures It runs for 10 days and there is a parade. They also normally have a show Arabian Nights Musical Pageant in the evenings. It was not the same the past couple of years due to the current situation, but hopefully in 2023.

You can tell in which part of the country I live. I was surprised by the video title "great spots for a date" thinking of date night only to find out it was about the fruit! As always great video.

This brings back memories .. Valerie Jean's wasn't far from where we lived in Thermal and my father would take me there for cheeseburgers and date shakes ,..

Other earlier facetious comment aside - I really love watching your videos and look forward to watching them. Please keep up the good work. People want to hear about statues and fountains and who donated things and where the timber came from - I certainly do. Thanks and can't wait for the next one !!🙂

We always stopped at Jean's whenever we were there in the 1950's and 1960's. I love date shakes. Was so sad to find them closed. Modern date shakes ain't the same.

What was the difference in the Shakes? We've found every place does them different giving them different tastes and textures.

In all our travels in the area we've never once stopped for date shakes. Seems like we're missing out from what a lot of people say. Had no idea this was the first place that offered them though! Next time we're heading through the area maybe we'll have to budget the time to finally stop.

@@SidetrackAdventures For sure! Theres plenty to do and see here. I'm in the central area in Austin there is a wide variety of day trips and neat towns. Also, since you do a lot of videos on route 66, Oklahoma actually has the most consecutive driveable stretch of the road as it runs from the eatern border with Missouri to the western here in Texas.

I got some sad news to report I just drove by Valerie and there was damage done to the north side wall not sure if it was Hallary or if a car crash it but the wall on the corner of Ave 66 has a big hole in it. remember coming here as a kid getting candy and shakes. It sad to see it go. Fun facts the railroad ties that hold up the from came from the railroad track that went into the old salt mine at the bottom of the Salton Sea when it got flood there was no need for the track so they took the railroad ties.

Light bulb!! I have super tall Mexican Palms that need trimming and I've been struggling to come up with a safe idea for getting up to the fronds. Attach ladders to the tree (then take them off when I'm done), duh! Cool video by the way.

I've seen some really long poles with trimmers on them, but not sure how well those work or how accurate/easy to use they are.

Do not do it yourself. It is dangerous work. Many people have died harvesting dates or trimming fronds. Hire an arborist.

My family went to Indio way back in the Sixties when I was a little kid to visit my Uncle who used to live there. I remember my little sister giggling when we watched the sex life of a date at Shields. I remember how hot it was and how my dad bout us one Date Shake to share. Even though that was over 50 years ago, I can still remember how good that date shake tasted.
