Angeleyes.. what can I say...one of the most glorious melodies I've ever heard...the harmonies are divine...IMO, abba at their finest....I can't wait for next week...I'm travelling to London to see voyage ,2 nights in a row🎉....Happy days❤
The harmonies on Angel eyes are very beautiful and the song itself is so catchy ! Very nice it gets so much attention these days. Well deserved. Great, all this background information you gave! And even Agnetha's comment on the song in 1979. Let's hope it will be a real hit in Summer 2022! That would be so much fun!
I’d never really listened to the lyrics of “Angeleyes” until I’d heard the cover by the Czars, it’s a really good version which gives an extra depth to the song.
@@nickw8363 They took a pop- dance track and turned it into a ballad breathing out lots of tenderness and sensitivity. You then feel more the pain of being betrayed and the suffering while being addictive to a non loyal partner and his deceptive angel looks. All this is hidden in a lot of Abba songs while being coated with their 'cheerful' vocals and melodies.
The "oh no no no noooo" is such a signature vocal kick by the ladies that it was an instant disco favourite at the time. Party music, very cinematic lyrics, it deserved a "promo film". But who'd imagine it would be a massive TikTok hit... thanks for bringing this to us!!
When I came by the Voulez vous album (back in 1979) and I listened to it Angeleyes was the song that immediately became my favourite on the album. And still is.
Hey hey It’s a beautiful song 🎵 I love the harmonies especially for me it’s so ABBA and there classic ah ah ha 😉 I’m thrilled to know how much the younger ABBA fans are appreciateing all ABBA songs that wee fans have loved for 40yrs or so 🥳 There’s something in the air again and again 🥳
I have noticed that Voulez Vous (Original and Deluxe Edition) is getting now some attention with Chiquitita, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight), and Angel Eyes especially on youngsters like me. Btw, I'm pretty sure there is a high chance of possibility that Benny might like to collab with David Grohl after his appearance from the Glastonbury festival wearing an ABBA t-shirt. (Also, David Grohl is a big fan of ABBQ and wants to play drums with them) In response, Benny wore a Foo Figthers t-shirt. Another thing, I have noticed from Svanna's IG story post, there is a photo of Ludwig that had the caption On Sweden for an important thing (I don't fully remeber the caption.) That means there is a high chance posibility of having a new material. Also someone said on the German Radio that the next single was Keep An Eye On Dan accompanied by a video. Maybe that was one possible project or they are preparing something new material for ABBA Voyage that are now ready for release either new performance of the ABBAtars or new live album (as I have seen on a music forum site). Anyways that's what I've seen recently. Again, thank you Bobby's Brother for another video giving insights on the wave of Angle Eyes. Giving fresher perspective makes everything great and wonderful. Have a nice day
@@bobbysbrother137 Mines toooo!Tight sparkling harmonies, stardust music arrangement, heavenly melody and backing vocals. There's too much going on to this.A lush production to a dynamic standalone masterpiece that was about to be given a chance as a single but sadly remained an album track.Same case with "Move On"...
I Love Angel Eyes. What a great uplifting and spirited Song. The Angelic Melodic harmonies from Agnetha and Frida are pure bliss. ' Thanks BB for this interesting great news on this fabulous Melodic Masterpiece." Be well and keep up the great work you present us.. Joe👍🎶🇺🇸
What a great background story to Angel Eyes, which only Bobby’s Brother could unearth! One of my Abba favorites and just like Just a Notion, Benny and Björn got it wrong at first! No matter because everything Abba does, turns out to be pure GOLD! 👌🏻💖
I think it's great the younger generation have caught on to the wonder of ABBA and can create a good story board for their shorts, because the songs have such meaning -full and relatable lyrics .Bjorn and Benny have made some very cool decisions. I heard a completely different version of Dancing Queen on the radio last night, very futuristic, but i didn't catch the artist as they ran the end of the song into the beginnings of another... Voulez-Vous was my first ABBA vinyl record that i bought, but i was into them since 1974, and buying that album changed it up for me so much...i remember playing it on my parents radiogram with my ear glued to a speaker.! What a pain looking back now: no pause or rewind buttons, the only option was to move back the needle if you wanted to check in on the extra vocals etc..very time consuming 😵😬. I haven't seen the tic tok versions that are being put out there, but i will be checking up on them after this. Thank you BB we can always rely on your fantastic research in keeping us in the loop, without you I'd be missing such a lot of what's been taking place. We appreciate the time you put into each blog. 👌😇
Interesting that it's being revived by tiktok... I remember ABBAs first revival, the first time I saw Bjorn Again in a small nightclub in 1991, looking around at the entire crowd singing along to Angeleyes and thinking how amazing it was to be among fellow travellers who also loved this relatively obscure b-side. It's a nice pop song but also one of Bjorn's best lyrics, with some really clever Smokey Robinson- style internal rhyming, and real emotional depth.
I never liked Angeleyes much although I know a lot of fans do. I much preferred 'As good as new'. Nice to see that Angeleyes is making a come back though. You can't have too much ABBA !
The first record I bought when I started listening to Abba's music was " Greatest Hits vol 2". I remember that "Angeleyes" was featured on it but not the "Voulez vous " track. I fell instantly in love with this catchy tune and vocals arrangements. I think it was released as a A side in France. Thank you Bobby's Brother for this video that prove once again that Abba continues to be an intergenerational inspiration, a group that moves people through cultures and years.
Oh, that‘s another curiosity indeed. „Angeleyes“ was included, but „Voulez-Vous“ wasn‘t! I think it‘s fascinating how they treat their unreleased songs, once they‘ve been redeemed: „Just A Notion“ was even raised to single status, and „Put On Your White Sombrero“ became a favourit of Benny, who continues to play it in concert.
@@bobbysbrother137 IMO releasing Just A Notion as a single was a mistake. It featured in the UK singles chart for 1 week at #59. Kind of embarrassing tbh. 😳
Angeleyes is awesome. I loved it from the time it was released. It is soooo much better than Just A Notion and rightly had a place on the album. It was a #3 single here in the UK and highly regarded. I really love everything about it. The production, instrumentation, melody, lyrics and the vocals! 😁
I like both "Just A Notion" and "Angeleyes". The reworked JAN is magical, especially the piano melody of the chorus in the end. And they both include Ah-Ah-Ah :-)
WOW, they didn't seem keen on a song that is one of their most LOVED!! The intro Ah-ha-ha, ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha is sooo signature ABBA that it has always sent chills down my spine! "A tone that is too low and too high", or whatever they had said .... NOOO, it has a range so pleasing to the ear and a depth of sadness, melancholy and strength that makes it soar and the instrumentals are ear tickling icing on the cake! I can't imagine the stir the song would have made had it been held back for the Voyage album, but glad it was released when it was !!
Loveagain your new video.Generally don't like the sped up versions but feel proud of ANGELEYES appeal and love the response it gets from the youngsters.Maybe i'm misinformed but i also think it also got partly featured in a netflix series or smth.Love all the Abba shots feauturing the band in the studio cause it pictures their joy of recording together. The place where Abba were creating their history.Love also Agnetha's lil chat and her "Hallooo..." with that interviewer. She sounds so charming, charming...and charming. She was 29 years old at the time.Miss those years and i get easily tranported to the feeling of that era whenever i'm given the chance, such as with vids like this.
IT WAS RELEASED AROUND THE SAME TIME, AS ROXY MUSIC'S ANGEL EYES. SO PEOPLE WERE A BIT CONFUSED. MAYBE BECAUSE, ROXY MUSIC, APPEARED ON : ABBA IN SWITZERLAND. AND PEOPLE TEND TO LABEL ABBA AS A POP/DISCO BAND. TO ME ABBA IS A PERFECT BLEND OF : POP, ROCK, FOLK, REGGAE, CLASSICAL, COUNTRY, CARRIBEAN, FUNK AND DISCO MUSIC. I'M SOOOO HAPPY, THAT ANGELEYES NOW GETS APPRECIATED. IT'S A MASTERPIECE. VOULEZ VOUS TO ME, IS THEIR BEST GREATEST HITS, AMONGST THEIR 9 STUDIO ALBUMS. OTHER SONGS THAT I MEAN, SHOULD GET A LOT MORE ATTENTION FROM VOULEZ VOUS: AS GOOD AS NEW, THE KING HAS LOST HIS CROWN, IF IT WASN'T FOR THE NIGHTS, LOVERS ( LIVE A LITTLE LONGER, AND KISSES OF FIRE 🥰😍😍🥰
Earthquakes produce aftershocks ,and with ABBAs seismic return ,just like Earthquakes we have the aftershocks ,and they will not cease .This is the new reality for a generation maybe two and with those new generations experiencing a live ABBA presence, like us older fans from the 1970s/80s,they want the experience to expand and become immersive and fulfilling, this is what ABBA are and what they are about ,PERFECTION, PURITY and complete ADDICTION in a beautiful and loving union with any individual that take them into their hearts and minds .Angeleyes so full of string arrangements so complex in its structure and so definitive with the third voice of Agnetha and Annifrid combined, this is beyond genre it is its own genre ,like the whole of the VOULEZ VOUS album it touches different styles and genres but eventually rises up and transcends anything that has gone before those themes ,ABBA are their own genre and style that NO other can replicate, and THATis why they will never fade away or ever be forgotten they are the ultimate perfect genre the DISTILLATION of the spirit of ALL genres.
I’ve been listening to Angel Eyes a lot recently. I didn’t know about it’s recent popularity. I love the story , the way the words fit within the melody the catchy keyboard hooks and trills and of course the beautiful vocal lines. The chorus melody is perfect for the words and the dreamy hypnotic vocal harmonies are entrancing.
im sorry Bobby but at 3:18 Agnetha that face she is perfect help , i have played guitar for 40 years , im 63 and deling with muscle problems in the hand but I still listen a lot and now all I listen to is ABBA or Agnethas solo songs . Her voice everything about her she is perfect . I wish when they came to boston in 1979 i was into them i was in a popular hard rock band but I still remember there was this pretty blonde in ABBA and of course who dont love their songs even when you are 20 like I was in 1979 !! I am in no way discounting the other members especially the invredible songwriting and Fridas also perfect beautiful voice but there is just something about Agnetha I cant explain , oh wait I can , her beautiful self and perfectly clear unlimited range voice ! Another great upload my friend great job ! What would be awesome is any footage of them in the songwriting process like SOS my fav song !
I always think that The King Has Lost His Crown is a sequel to Angeleyes. In Angeleyes, the singer sees him with a new girl. In the KHLHC, he has finally been turned down by the new girl. Two strong songs. Thanks BB.
Hey Bobby's Brother...now isn't it strange how songs that were not as popular as others by artists suddenly come ti the fore later on down the years & this what's happening with angel eyes..!,I personally love the song & always have as the two ladies voices just go together like apple pie 🥧 & custard 🍮 😋 thanks again for your masterful uptake of another ABBA review..keep em coming 👍
Not only was Voulez Vous made during their most prolific period, but ‘78-‘79 was, in my opinion, also the musical sweet spot in the history of music. All sorts of music was coming out at the time; different genres, televised music shows on the cusp of MTV, LPs were still king, and most importantly, the masses still listened largely to the same music. Categorization of music, cable TV, and the explosion of AM/FM alternatives thereafter led to smaller audiences. In those days, you just had to set your radio dial to one or two stations and you got it all: ABBA, Boston, Kool and the Gang, and Crosby, Stills & Nash all played together without ever having to move the dial. It just isn’t so these days.
Voluez Vous was the first cassette my brother and I bought back in 1979, I remember falling in love with ABBA instantly, I must said that I like the whole album but one of my favorites tracks was Angeleyes even more than Voluez Vous, I think it's a pity that they didn´t make a promo video and not even performed the song in one of the many TV special they made during that time. I´m so happy to know that the song is having all this attention now a days, it´s very well deserved.
You precious BB.Splendid video!Nice rare pictures and little clips! And again new precious little ifos!Didn't know it was intended for the 'Gracias por la musica' album. And btw "Been and Gone and Done it"(3:01) was the working tittle of G!G!G!.(Bet you knew that too).
Hey, hey! I love the Voulez-Vous album very much and I enjoy the song Angeleys very much. I hope you`ll continue with the the ABBA Tour documentarys. I loved these videos very much. Best regards from Germany.
I've always loved this song, maybe my favourite song in Voulez-Vous and one of my ABBA favourites. I love the sixties flavour and the amazing vocals, high and low lines. And the lyrics? I remember being a teenager, falling in love with someone who I saw was having a walk with a girl instead of me, and I felt really reflected in these beautiful lyrics. That was a long time ago!
Well, that's a surprise, and I'm thrilled that one of their lesser-known tracks is getting the attention it deserves! The a-capella "Ah-has" in the beginning and the song then kicking off into the dance beat always have me hooked - go, #Angeleyes!
No Björn I say this with love. Please don’t dust off your platform boots. You’d break your hip wearing them now. 🤣🤣 we need you around to help write the tenth album :)
Hmmmm ! was in the coffee shop sitting down and ‘the young generation’ employees put a sorta homemade Abba compilation on which blew me away, couldn’t help it handing in my empty cup I said “Scanda?” I’ve always thought the vocals on some of their albums have been sped up very slightly Angel eyes seems a little that way. It seems to add a sorta texture to it that’s unique to hear. Just my opinion tho ❤️❤️❤️
Didn't know Bjorn and Benny were skeptical about Angeleyes and Just A Notion. Ironically, I knew they were skeptical about Summer Night City. I guess Bjorn and Benny realize Summer Night City is a fan favorite now, since it's in the Voyage show. Just A Notion kind of has that early ABBA sound, even though it came in their prime years.
Thanks Bobbys Brother , great video again. A favourite song of mine. The UK different picture sleeve for the single lists Angeleyes as the first track and Voulez Vous second.. Hence Angeleyes being the top three single as it was played more on radio. The record label has A1 and A2. The picture sleeve in the UK used the Chiquitita picture. Around the same time in 1979, Roxy music had a single in the charts called Angel eyes but as two words. A quick mention to the Mamma Mia 2 sing along double cd edition, as on cd 2 you get all the songs from the second movie as instrumentals by Benny and the musicians with occasional backing vocals by the cast .including Angeleyes. In South Africa Angeleyes was the B side to I have a dream.
I feel the same way about this as I do with similar examples, such as Kate Bush running up the charts thanks to Stranger Things. We've seen it before; Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" went to the top spot, 40 years after its initial release. And Toto's "Africa" got about a billion views overnight. That's the power of social media for you. And it can be both a good and a bad thing. Obviously, it's a good thing for the artists. I mean, hey, extra income for a song you thought was half-forgotten? Yes, please! What I'm less positive about is that these older songs seem to be picked at random. It's not necessarily because the songs are so fantastic that they blow up in popularity. It's because kids today hear them on TV shows or while playing video games, etc. But you never hear about those same kids exploring the rest of artists' discographies, do you? It's always that same song that everyone else suddenly likes. Whatever is trending, that's the ONLY thing that's important, apparently. And I don't like that. I would like kids to be inspired to not only discover more of the older music, but also to build upon what came before and try to improve on it. And that simply doesn't happen today. Oh, the bad guy in "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly" is called Angel Eyes. Although, I don't think Björn and Benny were inspired by him! 😂
great comment. I completely agree with you, there's something so 'instant gratification' and mindlessly consumer-like about the tiktok fads that is a put off
@@annedonker4795 Thanks, Anne. Yes, I agree completely with that. And not only that, but entertainment (along with most other things) has become quite disposable as well. There's too much choice when everything is available, and not enough hours in the day to explore it all, so kids today instead expect others to tell them what's good or not. TV shows do that. Social media sites as well. And suddenly you have a generation or two of kids who only like whatever's trending on their platform of choice. "Nobody told me about this!" "Where has this been all my life?" If you watch reaction videos, these are lines you hear ALL the time. It's as if people under the age of 30 don't understand that they're carrying all the music ever recorded in their hands! They don't look forward to the next big album for several years because.....the album as an artform is dead. It's all tracks now. And they only give those a few seconds' listen before moving onto the next track. Probably because the thinking is that for every track they're listening to, there's a million other tracks they COULD be listening to instead. So there's no actual enjoyment in any of it! Where's the sense of mystique and wonder? Why aren't people curious anymore? I blame the Internet. When everything is out in the open and transparent, then nothing is that interesting. You can see the wizard behind the curtain...
Hey Hey Bobby, “Angel Eyes”is a throwback to the 50’s and 60’s like “Just a Notion” . There was an influx of story songs. Leader of the Pack, Johnny Angel, Honey. Though I like both, I like the upbeat of Just a Notion, yet both go together . I see how he looks at you don’t be fooled, he looked me that way too but I have an idea he’ll be coming back to me. As for Bjorn’s disco boots, he did wear them in a video earlier on last year. And as we women know styles eventually come back, which is why I still have my Nehru shirt and a sadly too small pair of bell bottoms. I see in your background, you have Alf, I too have one , confiscated by my 16 year old granddaughter. She loves the show. I wish they made ABBA puppet figures as in The Last Video, which to the worlds surprise, wasn’t.🇺🇸
In the Mamma Mia 2 version of Angeleyes, the shift in key to make it easy for Amanda Seyfried to sing it was such a refreshing change that it just made that already catchy song even better.
"Angeleyes" should've been released as an A-side single in the U.S. right after "Does Your Mother Know." I'm confident that ABBA could've made an edited version to make it more radio friendly, as 4+ plus minute songs were "edited" by the DJs talking anyway. Plus, the U.S. was in the midst of a huge disco backlash in the Fall of '79, while "Angeleyes" transcends disco while incorporating 50s/60s choral harmoies.
I get what Björn and Benny thought about the vocals. The verses are pretty high to Agnetha and low for Frida, the only time it gets easy is during the choruses. But, for me, that's what makes it sound so great: the vocals in different octaves.
I've always loved AngelEyes and also love John Grant's wonderfully creepy gender-reversed section (check it out!) but I love even more your enthusiasm and attention to detail, Bobby's Brother. Keep them coming!
When Johnny Rotten did his infamous appearance on the BBC show “jukebox jury” around 1978, he absolutely trashed this song, and even the Abba fans on the panel said it was not their best. I was thinking, this is one of their most appealing songs ever!
Same man sang FERNADO in front of a live audience some months back.Saw it in Utube. It was fashionable to slagg off Abba at the time.In recent years, i only know just some 3 famous people that does this.Bob Geldof, one member of Pink Floyd(Roger Waters) and old '60s hippie David Crosby from Crosby Still Nash who said some rather disgusting and quite humiliating things on Abba back in 2018 that i couldn't believe while reading his hideous, abusive statements! It's ok to have different opinion and a rightful thing to express. But It's healthy to do this in a civilsed non prejudiced way.And anyway who should care?!The public has already decided for Abba's eternal survival.
It didn't occur to me until just now how there was an odd period of 1950s nostalgia during the 1970s. As you noted, yes, there was "Grease." But there was also the movie "American Graffiti" and "American Pop" and the lingering influence of Elvis, who was doing massively successful "oldies" shows up until his untimely death in 1977. And then there were the massively successful TV shows "Happy Days" and "Laverne and Shirley." So, yes, it seems quite fitting that ABBA would get caught up in that 1950s retro zeitgeist during the 1970s.
Hmm, cannot believe that Angeleyes was near to be canceled...:-o It is very unique song 'cos the most of its tones are played on black keys (halftones? Don't know if it is the correct english word for it...) that gives it an atmosphere and mood like no another song. It was among the first ABBA songs I have found out and still is one of my most fave. Well, if they decided in 78 to put Just a notion on Voulez-vous album instead of it, I would like to believe that Angeleyes would be recorded today on Voyage album...:-D
Thanks for a great channel Bobby! :) Can you help us push the button so we can have Abbas songs remixed to Dolby Atmos? Voyage is there of course, but we want the classics!
It has a 60's beat doesn't it and aren't they all singing the verses?. But do you recall Roxy Music released their own Angel Eyes single the following month which reached number 4 in the UK. I remember thinking how curious for two groups to release singles with the same title so close. Yeah love Dave Grohl for wearing the gold embroidered logo sweatshirt on stage with Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen at Glasto. Got my Voyage concert tickets!.
Yeeeaaahhh!Loved this too.David kicks a@@!He 'unbashefully' adores ABBA and doesn't give a damn if it's right or wrong for a Rocker to say so.He just seems that he wants the whole world to know it!He even toured some years back with FFighters wearing a black T shirt with the ABBA Gold logo written on it.He even had same t shirt on while being interviewed in an American(i think) famous tv talk show. And last but not least he has uploaded lil clips in the net while dancing alone to 'Dancing Queen' with some disco lights on!.
@@alexioverdo5225 Hi Alexio and thanks for your great reply. I saw a video clip of Benny and Bjorn on stage with Bono and he was saying he wasn't worthy to them so they certainly do have plenty of rock musician admirers.
@@grahaml9664 Hi Graham L!Well i really got kinda bulled as a child from some ol rockers back then for my Abba love and i suffered a lot inside my teenage soul .But now it seems 'i take my blood back' about it,lol! The number of rock celebs that are Abba lovers is huge and from unexpected ones.Such as Corey Taylor from Slipknot, the drummer of KORN,Liam Gallaher from OASIS and even the leaderman of The Smashing Pumpkins to mention but a few. And lets not forget, OZZY,Richie Blackmoore,Gene Simmons and Ian Gillan from the older ones. You know revenge is sweet sometimes and that dish is served cold,ha!ha!
Graham L/Alexio,Benny kindly showed back his gratitude to David 2 days ago by posting a little clip of a FF melody playing it on his piano and wearing a Foo Fighters T shirt ploudly exposing it at the end of the video!
I agree with the fact that Voulez-Vous isn't really a disco album; if anything it's disco-inspired, and barely. The closest to actual disco there is If It Wasn't For The Nights, and maybe Lovers (Live A Little Longer). And the later is way too agressive to be part of the genre anyways. I would say it would fit more under the vague europop category, as pretty much all of ABBA's other albums
I agree.Despite the album's disco feel and disco flavoured cover, the album had only 4 disco tracks on it's original release.AGAN/VV/IIWFTN/ and Lovers which is more reminiscent of the early "slow paced" disco songs of around 1975/76 'Silver Convention disco era ' that also involved lots of srtings in instrumentation terms.Rest of the album is pure Abba's pop.Quite various and always addictive.
Always loved the song, but I know nothing about TikTok. Whatever gets the young generation to discover ABBA is fine with me. Most of the new stuff simply does not compare.
I have some feedback I'm gonna share: Your voice is too low in my opinion. I don't know if it's microphone related, but I have to turn up the volume a lot to hear your speaking.
In my opinion this album was the worst. I didn't feel the real Abba in the songs. .Light years away from the real Abba style. I update my favourite songs: 1) Eagle 2) The day before you came 3) Don't shut me down 4) The visitors.
