Callander in Scotland, is a small town in the council area of Stirling, about 16 miles northwest of the city of Stirling itself. It is situated on the east bank of the river Teith. It is a popular tourist stop for those travelling to and from the Highlands. It is sometimes referred to as the place where the Highlands meet the Lowlands.
It is known to have been a Roman settlement, with the Romans naming the place Bochastle when they built a fort beside the river circa AD 83.
Callander is mentioned in parish records since at least the 15th century. The Medieval Parish of Callander was a patchwork of estates, settlements, and farms.
The town's name is supposed to be derived from the Gaelic name "calladh," meaning "ferry" or "the way leading to the ferry," a reference to the days when a ferry was used to cross the river.
Callander it is known for its scenic beauty and historical significance.
Bracklinn Falls and River Keltie are natural attractions that have been of interest to visitors for generations and offer beautiful walks and scenic views.
St Kessog's Church, is a prominent building in Ancaster Square, in the centre of the town.
Callander also serves as a gateway to the Highlands to the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.
The Rob Roy Way, a 79-mile, long-distance walking route, passes through Callander, celebrating the town's connection to the famous Scottish folk hero, Rob Roy.
Rob Roy MacGregor, was born on March 7, 1671, at nearby Glengyle, Loch Katrine, he was a Scottish outlaw who later became a folk hero.
He was a member of the Clan MacGregor and gained the nickname "Rob Roy" (Red Rob) due to his dark red curly hair.
Rob Roy was known for his involvement in cattle rustling and protection rackets, which led to his reputation as a Highland outlaw.
He eventually became a legitimate cattle dealer.
With involvement in the Jacobite Rising of 1715, Rob Roy's life became romanticised, and he is often likened to a 'Scottish Robin Hood' due to his exploits opposition the Duke of Montrose and his clashes with the forces of the law.
However, it was said that his involvement in the uprising was simply part of his ongoing feud with the Duke of Montrose, who had seized his lands and evicted his family, leading to a personal vendetta.
While Rob Roy's loyalty to the Jacobite cause has been debated, it is clear that his actions during the rebellion were intertwined with his personal struggles and conflicts with the powerful figures of the time it remains the case that he is inextricably linked with the area around Callander.
