Catch wrestling is a classical hybrid grappling style and combat sport invented in Britain. Once a pinnacle of combat sports, it became increasingly pre-arranged, giving rise to the pro-wrestling we now see. However, the real deal stayed on in the background ready to It is starting to make its way back on into the grappling scene, and with the rise of BJJ and MMA it is getting bigger once more. Fantastic vid. I am familiar with a lot of the finishes but I liked how you built the sequence from the tie up and progressively built on it. What I like most about catch is that the basics seem to integrate into just about any style or art. ( especially Japanese ones where standing grappling tends to occur due to grabbing the gi).

The other day, I REALLY made a Gracie Brazilian Jiujitsu mad when I told him that Catch Wrestling could beat BJJ. He was pissed.

Yes he had to be pissed, cause if you join a BJJ comp team and roll with the high level or elite grapplers, they'll make you regret and pay for your saying, guarantee you that. Been there. Now pay attention, Sakuraba and Josh Barnett are the very few who clean technically catch defeated Gracies. Besides that, Gracies could give you tone of real life match stories where BJJ prevail over catch. Neil Melanson, Josh Barnett, both great ambassadors for catch are now speaking on how catch is a disappearing grappling breed. Josh even spoke of how harder it was for him to find another version of grappler who could beat him or continue the catch work for years ahead to come. Catch isnt fading away, its just being pciked up by BJJ grapplers, who will probably shut down catch schools after picking all their moves. Its alreay in progress, but keep in mind, catch cannot beat BJJ.

@@tededo Rufino Dos Santos defeated Carlos Gracie waayyy back in the day (like around 1935 or something). And the Gracies, unable to take an "L" fair and square retaliated by jumping Dos Santos, three against one. You don't see American kickboxers ganging up on Thai's after losing, do you? I didn't say that BJJ is an inferior grappling art, far from it. What I said was that if I had to choose between Brazilian Jiujitsu and Catch Wrestling, I'd choose the latter.

I was already sold on catch wrestling, after studying a few vids put out by Matt Furey , quite a few years ago..and this video demonstration really reinforced it . I think catch wrestling submissions are more devastating and effective overall , than similar ones taught in jiu jitsu . Due to the variety of tweaks that seem to be part of the arsenal. As well, some can even be aplied standing . Plus, it seems to have more variety of take downs and throws than jiu Jitsu. However , i still find jiu jitsu an absolute must know, for both learning how to defend from the guard position. As well as how to escape it.. And i haven't seen much emphasis or techniques from catch wrestling , on how to deal with same . This is the one flaw with catch wrestling, in my view . However , if i am wrong and there are actually catch techniques , dealing with all this ... I'd be very grateful to anyone providing information or video links , etc

In catch it's often called a "Saturday night ride" instead of guard. The position is used to avoid a pin rather than attack from (in general terms anyway) so is far less comprehensive than jujutsu in the approach. However as a result of this there are ways that arose to "break" the guard that aren't found in jitz Josh Barnett has some excellent guard dvds out

Find a club and have at it! Failing that some good collegiate wrestling and some BJJ will give you some exposure and insight ...they aren't as different as many would have you believe

Yes it is - some would claim "the original" form, and not without basis. It is certainly the more well known thanks to Billy Robinson, Karl Gotch etc and the history of the Snake Pit in Wigan.

Honestly the best guys are Roy Wood at the Snakepit Wigan if you're in England! If in the states Catch Wrestling Alliance or Jon Strickland!

Harry has met Roy many times and speaks fondly of him. Catch has such a rich tapestry of tra jers and instructors, and there is variation from region to region and school to school. I was born and bred in Manchester (Hyde) and am well aware of the history there. This is a very, very small taste from what I have learned which is from Billy Robinson line (who taught Roy) Thanks for watching

@@HAVOCJKD You have got that wrong my friend, Billy Robinson never taught Roy Wood! Roy Wood was taught by Billy Riley 😂 If you knew anything about the history of Catch Wrestling you'd know this!

@@HAVOCJKD Again, your phrasing concerns me Roy Wood was never coached by Billy Robinson! He was taught by none other than Billy Riley, and is Billy Riley's successor! My lineage comes through that line, but it's probably going to take me 8-10 years before I'm good enough to teach!

@@rippersubmissionwrestling2704 its probably akin to senior student/junior student relationship. Certainly Billy was the more accomplished and would often muck in at the pit. Its not a hill I'd die on regardless. Certainty Riley was the main influence (though according to Gotch not the best wrestler) there, and no one is denying that. As I said, Harry spoke very fondly of meeting Roy and he is certainly a key figure on the UK scene alongside others such as Jack Mountford. As long as we are all representing then the art will continue to grow and spread, stylistic spice and pickles aside

I tell or someone tells that the "real combat" techniques... which is what you call the catch, come from the region between Egypt and India, therefore, African, Arab, Persian and Indian technique... So it doesn't do much for your ideas of Aryan racial supremacy hahaha

@@MishaBJJ that what you are seeing is "hard" and uncontrolled - it's not. It is no harder than any sub put on in a high energy roll. The tap is always respected, it's just the techniques themselves come on quicker because of certain mechanics in how they are applied

It goes by any names you want. In common parlance these days the vast majority know it is the Kimura, so sometimes the vernacular is easy to use mid flow. I learned it as a DWL first, but I'm not so precious or delicate as to quibble over the other terms used ....a rose by any other name etc As my coach is Harry Smith I'm pretty sure I have my lineage down just fine - and he doesn't give a hoot what i call it as long as I can execute it

Hate the swan neck, you've shown a postion that has no levarage to control the head and you've just locked in a collar elbow that isn't doing anything. This is what happens when you're copy pasting grappling ideas without wreslting expericance. When you're putting your weight on someone you don't leave an arm straight, hangling down for extra weight, WTF, this is extactly what i'm on about. This guy ideas are well above his station. Not trying to be a prick but so much of this won't work in reality. I love catch and this is so bastard, half cocked, duiltied down version. Look who hos practising his "tech" on, how is that not a tell? He gives me self defense vibes i can't watch anymore but i bet he's into chi.

Jesus Christ dude! Can't you hear her? And no I'm not being a grappling pansy, I'm a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu and Brown Belt in Judo and Brown Belt in Japanese Jiu Jitsu, Retied MMA fighter and boxer. So, I'm aware that this stuff is not supposed to be nice and comfortable. But there is no reason to go that fast or deep on that wristlock. Other than that, I love Catch. It's my style of grappling and great techniques. But man, I was feeling for her

She's tougher than booked leather and is fine - and above all the Tap is ALWAYS respected. We have trained together for years and you get used to an "ouchy" noise and a "stop right now" noise If you watch the Catch videos on this channel where Harry is feeding me my own ass you hear me making similar noises, but everything is under control.
