I've been a playing DADGAD almost exclusively since the early 1980s. It's perfect for noodling and I discover something new every time I pick my guitar up.
Thanks. There are some features on other tunings but DADGAD is by far the most popular. I shall be putting up some simple tunes soon for you to get to know and them hopefully embellish.
Hi Andy, I was lucky enough to see the great Si Barron performing at my local open mic last Thursday and was inspired to tune my spare guitar to dadgad. I have played around with this tuning previously without much joy, but your tutorial has encouraged me to try again. Thanks very much, and I have subscribed to your channel, regards, Dave.
You are the first person I've heard refer to the bass strings as the "top" strings, and also the first the first to say that going to the higher frets is moving "down" the neck. Opposite to my way of thinking, in both cases. Nice guitar, BTW!
Greg Mirr what's new about it .I was using it fifty years ago .it's been around since the first strings were bought .Davy Graham told me he discovered it in the sixty's .he would be pissing himself with laughter if he could hear all these musical genius es.
Thank You! Your guitar sounds and looks beautiful. The body shape is so well designed and I am sure for a certain sound as well. Glad I discovered you this day. DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Thanks. The guitar was made by a very talented luthier in the UK, Adrian Lucas. the guitar was commissioned for this kind of stuff but it also a great blues guitar! Where about in Pennsylvania are you? You can find some of my original songs - including ones on Pittsburgh and Philli on my Soundcloud pages: soundcloud.com/ndyowell
Andy Howell Hi Andy, Thanks for your responce. I'm near Lancaster, about 60 miles west of Phila. I've been playing many years and new tunings and tricks have cause me to get back into playing every day, fingers back in shape again. My tonewood amp has been a inspiration as well I must add. I will definetly stay in touch. I often tell folks I play kitchen music, when asked. This is when you get together witb music pals and play music. Always a special life moment and I'm sure you know what I mean. Jammin heaven. Thanks Much! DaveyJO
That's an interesting one. The intonation on this guitar is excellent but then I've played others made by Adrian Lucas and they are just as good. But, for alternate tunings, I think it probably is better. I find the fan frets give you more space especially around the middle of the neck which is you are playing these runs is more comfortable.I'd never heard anyone else comment on this until I read an interview in Acoustic Guitar recently where the interviewee made the same view. Having a greater sense of space might also aid accuracy as well. Overall, and for this type of music, I think the fan fret just adds a bit all round. You could go for a longer scale but then you do loose some sweetness on the treble. I'm very glad I went down the fan fret route. I ahve other guitars for standard tuning!
Nice recording, are you using high quality mic and gear to record? Ive been recording for 30 years on a budget and I cant get that kind of clarity. I do suck at mixing and post production so it could be that haha
Have only just seen this - sorry! You are opening a whole can of worms here. This was recorded using a Zoom H6 mobile recorder, using the built in mics (which are pretty good). The too has a high roof and a fairly nice natural reverb. This is good space for recording guitar but not so good for speech! I did edit this in Logic. EQ for acoustic guitar is pretty important - you can take out quite serious amounts of bass using a shelf or slope Most of my other videos are recorded with a pair of Beyerdynamic 930 miens which are superb. They are not cheap but they are cheaper than many other options.
You can get high quality recording equipment for very cheap nowadays; we live in such good times! I recently bought an all-in-one recording package called the Focusrite Scarlett Solo Studio. It comes with an audio interface, condenser microphone, and headphones, all for around £180. They're all very good quality stuff, too. (Well, good enough for RU-vid!)
I'm subbing you purely because you are the first tutor on u tube that I've heard saying 'cappo' instead of 'caypo', at last ,someone who understands what it means,,,thanks mate,,,🤗👏
True in a pure sense but most people talk about going up or down the neck in this way. I find it best to keep things very simple (though I often get that wrong).
You don't need to present as something you aren't...it's fine to just noodle and enjoy what you come up with without pretending you understand what you are playing... You aren't even in tune man, why present as a professional? It's doing a disservice to the very people you claim this is aimed at. Just be honest and say you figured some things out by ear, you don't need all the posturing and music terms thrown in at random with no relation to what you are actually playing...
