i think they tend to be business majors (ie the bottom rung intellectually in college) who get there by kissing ass and believing every stereotype theyve ever heard. So.. not knowing that books as complex as the Catcher in the Rye are legendary teenage movies.. they view teenagers as wanting t and a and action and being as stupid as they are otherwise
In all these Exploring episodes, I've noticed that the most of these movies have one thing in common: the studios always wants to fix things that aren't broken and manages to screw up the movie.
It is incredibly frustrating. They continually take a product and dumb it down to appeal to the masses, but make the movie so ass that hardly anyone likes or remembers it after.
Imagine trying to take all the "boring" scenes out of The Godfather or The Departed. The "boring" scenes are some of the best...and...they give context.
I actually prefer to see a bad movie as long as that is the vision that the director intended...the directors and writers are the artists...and I want to see their vision and work...not some hatchet editing job by a studio money man.
I love Disturbing Behaviour, but it is incredibly frustrating to know that it could've been so much better if the director's cut had actually been released. Still, I think this is an underappreciated gem and even with the drastic cuts, you can get the vibes of what the director wanted it to be.
I appreciate the fan made cut that's been floating around the net for several years with the deleted scenes put back in including the original ending. It really helps the story flow better but sadly that's the closest we'll likely ever get to a directors cut of the film.
It is simple, the reason why execs are willing to change a good film when the majority of the audience likes it is greed. They think by changing just a few things that they will magically get 100% of the audience to love it. You will never get 100% of an audience to love a movie no matter how good it is.
Scream Queen Here, thank you for pointing that out!😄This is why I hate horror films now, cause they only want pointless cash grabs....And why I'm not making ANYMORE....Case in point....I saw The Trailer 4 The Strangers sequal...and already knew...they wanted me 2 clean up their own mess...and as you can imagine, that didn't end well....No wonder people don't go 2 the Movies anymore....Hollywood R the ones who're (cause Hollywood's become cheap) Hollywoods The ones who're scared.
Some horror movies are good now , Halloween, a quiet place, get out , etc but that is all thanks to the artist making them if studios had less control real art could blossom
No audience will *ever* be 100% in agreement about any movie - The fact that they cannot see this *completely obvious truth* is a measure of how doolally they've made themselves with statistics and sales forecasts and focus testing etc etc In the mean time, we all get bland mangled movies.... O~O
It's not greed, it's the bubble rich people live in. No one wants to tell the incompetent boss their ideas are shit. It's why the elite are always so dumb
And being scared of everything except the illusion of a sure thing. Studio interference happens far too often, fearing if their reputation is tarnished too much they will have less and less influence in the future.
Because they scared they won't get their money back. Don't worry though - this way of refining a film will soon die in favour of machine-learning algorithms designed to pinpoint what the specific users want.
I feel the studio realizes their mistake in releasing the theatrical cut instead of the film in it's entirety . I do think instead of just owning up, they double down and didn't want admit they fucked up.
They wouldn't even need to admit anything, just release the Director's Cut and not say anything about past decisions. Very few would care about the past decisions, so it's not like it'd hurt the studio.
What I don't understand is how out of touch studio's are and have always been. Somehow it almost always ends up like this and it's so weird as to how these people every made it into the industry at all.
This is still one of my favorite movies of all time. The cast, cinematography, locations, and score are all perfect. I still love it. I wish that we could get a directors cut.
Name recognition at the end of the day. People who love the work of a specific writer, director or producer will go see the film simply because it has their name attached to it so studios will hire said person for their name only. Its like when movies have cameos from big name stars who may only be in a movie for afew minutes yet give them top billing and publicise the movie based on their participation.
so maybe movie execs should make the films themselves since they think they are so creative and pay writers, directors and producers to have their names on it. That way when the movie tanks, studio execs have no one to blame but themselves and writers, directors and producers didn't waste their times/efforts in an inevitable hit on their reputation.
its writers they want to get rid of. It boggles the mind half the movies made are because a couple rich morons got together, tossed together a couple tropes they thought were brilliant and original, and handed random idiot 50 million dollars to put it on film
Lol, coming into this I was thinking "this could be the first time that executives actually helped a film, that's good to know they aren't always wrong and some oversight is needed in the movie Indu..." Then they decided to take apart a movie the majority liked. "YOU WILL NEVER EARN MY PRAISE EXEC'S!"
Disturbing Behavior is one of my favorite movies from the 90's. Endlessly quotable movie "rats! Rats from the bay" "every time one of these kids get a hard on they go beat some one with it" "someone queue the power ballad" "it's bad, it's wrong, it's wrong, it's bad" " what the hell is a yogurt shop-pee" "be the ball"...and on and on. Amazing soundtrack btw- Harvey Danger's Flagpole Sitta and The Flys- Got You to name a few, were huge hits because of this movie.
Studio execs remind me of an episode of Frasier where they hold an audience test for his show and everyone but one guy likes him, and Frasier basically stalks the guy desperate to find out why this one person disliked him. Just the fact the majority of the audience loved the original and they're like "But this one dude didn't, let's change it!" Part of me wishes I could get into test screenings for movies and just become a troll now. "So what are your thoughts on Black Panther?" "I dunno, can we make it more about Iron Man? Marvel movies don't have enough Iron Man."
Ironically, the bane of filmmaking is studio execs.... fucking suits. How many good films were turned into crap at their behest we'll never know. Not that this movie was ruined, but still cut to shreds, and I think I would prefer the uncut version.
Hollywood needs to have a bit of a crash tbh, execs are needed to run things behind the making of the film sure, but getting to the point now where the majority of high-budget action/horror films ect are just so safe and uncompromising, they end up being trite and predictable with no raised stakes or shocking scenes. It needs to crumble and pave the way for more independent studio ventures. With good writing, decent actors who actually fit their roles (not just dragged in cos they're big names) and a decent set up you can make amazing films from the simplest things...
The extended cut is floating around on the net (that's how I got it), and occasionally the SyFy channel shows it but with the theatrical ending still tacked on at the end versus the better one.
I've found the same to be true (in that they sometimes help and often hurt); I actually have an episode of Cinema Cemetery which covers good and bad examples of test audience feedback as well as the differing viewpoints certain filmmakers have on the topic! Great video btw, had never heard of Disturbing Behavior and now I'm totally going to check it out!
i actually like the theatrical cut of 1408 more than the directors original ending which was altered from test screenings. I like that Cusack's character lives at the end and you get that revelation of the recording of his dead daughters voice. IMO it's much better than that lame jump scare ending. Kind of sucks you have to buy the dvd to get the theater version bcus the blu ray has the director's ending only.
Your series has given me a totally new appreciation for character actors. Your attention to detail and love for these actors puts them on a pedestal they rightly deserve.
This is such an underrated film. I actually prefer the extended cut versus the theatrical version, especially due to the original ending which fits the tone of the movie much better than what ended up being in the theatrical version.
Love the irony of that last line. But seriously if someone with Nutter's cache, talent, credits, connections and pull can't fight the studios and win, I think I'll stick with the Indie world. (Oh and Nutter, The Red Wedding, still hurts man.)
The closest thing I ever got to see in a director's cut was when the USA Network aired what they called the "director's cut" back in early '00. They showed a lot of the little scenes with Embry alongside the Caldicott daughter speech scene and Newberry's explanation of what happened 3 years prior. I was glad I taped it coz man... that extended version was so good. You could tell some care went into this version because the scenes that were deleted were of the same quality as the rest of the movie and not like how the deleted scenes on the dvd looked like.
Wow, 'Shout Factory' couldn't get the rights for a director's cut? Shout Factory? Who managed to release MST3K on DVD and give us the director's cut of 'Nightbreed'? One of the producers must have hidden a murder confession in the director's cut, it's the only explanation.
At least they made the effort to try and release it finally. What's weird is that the TV cut of the film has most of the deleted scenes added back in except without the original ending and the usual edits for language and such.
Still love this movie. Dying to see that director’s cut. I do remember seeing this for the first time on tv and either the USA Network or SyFy played it with the deleted scene of Mr. Newberry telling the story of the drunk driving incident
I recently found your channel and you are fucking awesome. It's always fun to learn about movies that aren't well known but are great in their own way. RU-vid needs more positive film channels like yours, GBF. Keep up the great work!
The studio's behaviour here just makes me so incredibly angry. What the hell do they have to gain by not allowing the Director's Cut to appear on a blu ray release all these years later?
I love this channel because I have a few of these movies on DVD..the potential for them to be classics are there, and you can tell someone behind the camera knew what they were doing.
I've always mistakenly recalled this movie being a hit, and a pretty big deal when it came out in 1998. I think that's largely because it had two big hit songs on it's soundtrack that got played day and night on MTV at the time. Surprised you didn't mention that.
Studio fucks up another good movie again. I remember seeing this when it first came out, and it didn't make much sense, and was very fast paced. Now I know why. Thanks for another great retrospective. I've come to see so many movies that I watched in my youth in a different light, because you uncover why they may not have made sense, were too choppy and quick, etc. Keep up the good work.
I saw this film in the theater, and it was one of my first owned dvds upon release. I love it, and I am obsessed with it's potential, and have bored many with long rants after sharing the couch with viewing parties, about what could of been. and once upon a time in community theatre, I performed Steve's extended/deleted full monologue about his brother from the film. To this day, anytime the movie enters my conscious I immediately become a frustrated fan of why I cannot watch this intended cut. I was very relieved to see you had put this video together, and others, showing the community what went factually wrong in production. Now I can save my breath, and link them to this in the future. ONE NOTE: I do NOT believe SHOUT Factory had any intention or made any effort to restore the original cut, because after announcing it, others and I immediately questioned what exactly we were going to receive on the disc, and now I cannot find my inquiry, but you can still see one answer they gave to the question of the director's cut in the comment section their Bluray page... "Hi Mark--if it wasn't finished, it probably wasn't available to us at all." Which infuriated me and obviously others, because of the dull release they did deliver. Anyway, it's their fault we still don't have it, haha. Keep up the good work.
I really love that you shine a light onto interesting films which are otherwise (usually unfairly) neglected. I was in my teens when this came out in theaters and what I personally distinctly remember most is the trailer used Harvey Danger's great song, "Flagpole Sitta". Keep up the great work (random bit: one of your unscripted-videos mentions Centralia PA, which sparked a really interesting conversation between myself and a few friends who grew up near there- Shamokin PA- (sp...?) and have also visited many times) (we're all in Philly now)
I was never a fan of the teen horror trend post-Scream, but out of all of those movies, this one I kinda liked. Seeing this, with the clips and descriptions of what was cut out of the Director's Cut, I KNOW that had this movie been released complete, I would've LOVED it! Another example of corporate suits THINKING they know best for everybody else... hehe, kinda like the villain in this movie!!!
There are fan edits that take the deleted scenes from the DVD and put them back in the film but its still missing about 12 minutes from the original director's cut. For whatever reason, the studio refuses to let the DC get a full release.
I thought I was the only person who remembered this movie. This made me a fan of Nick Stahl. And I always thought it was funny that James Marsden looks older in this than he does now. "Appropriate sparks are flyin, somebody cue up the power ballad man"
another fantastic "exploring" video these are always a delight I like hearing about the additional information surrounding the film's and the in depth detail you include
Producers: “ We like the movie, is great!” Director: “Nice!” Producers: “But we also want you to change practically everything and if you don’t do it we’ll have someone else do it”
I just watched it on vhs for the first time and this video explains exactly what I was feeling. It’s like they stripped it down to a series of moments and the story got curbed.
Just watching it you could tell they really gutted this film...none of it made sense in a lot of places and everything was so rushed...there were big tonal shifts as well
Great analysis dude. I really enjoyed it. I was like 10 when this came out and forgot it existed and now its gonna be a cult fave for me like the crow and ginger snaps
I second this! It may not be appropriate for the channel though, as it is largely film discussion and not television, but I would be very interested to hear any thoughts on Millennium.
I love Millennium. I had a great chat with Lance Henrikson about it a while back. He was very proud of it. I'd love to do something on it but Fox owns the rights and they would DMCA it instantly.
Ah, that makes sense, it figures the copyright issues would be restrictive. It's cool that you got to talk with him about the show, sounds like a great experience! :) Thanks for the quick reply.
I love this movie and now I really wish I could see the director's cut. Shout factory appeals to film nerds and collectors. Mainstream audiences rarely buy physical media anymore. I wish the studio would have allowed Shout to release the director's cut. I wasn't able to buy that bluray before it went out of print but now I realize that what I have on the dvd is pretty much the same. Thanks for another great video!
Fantastic breakdown of one of my favorite movies from that time. Even the soundtrack had issues. The most popular song in the movie/trailers, Harvey Danger's Flagpole Sitta, was not even available on the soundtrack! Seriously wish I would have known you were doing this movie. I would have given a kidney to be apart of this review.
Very interesting video, as always! Man, I know this movie for a long time, since I read years (no decades! at this time I was a kid!) ago in a TV-newspaper about it. But to this day I've never seen it. Maybe because mind control is a topic that always frightened me and I feel not comfortable watching movies and series that contain it. Or, it was. I'm adult now. :D You reminded me to watch it. I didn't know that it was changed from the studio so much (one more reason to hate studio-executives) and now my expectations went a little down. But I'm still excited. I mean, this movie got Cyclops and John Connor in it, before they were known! ^^ And a director from "The X-Files" and "Game Of Thrones" (didn't knew that about David Nutter; in fact, before this video I knew nothing about him)! Fun fact: the german title of the movie is (translated): "We'll Get You Too!" Do you think, this fits it better or not? Anyways, keep up the great work! :)
This seems to be a recurring theme: _"Studio execs removed scenes because..."_ & the movie gets ruined. Makes me wonder how many shitty movies would've bee great had the dumb-ass, out of touch, studio-exec reptiles let the directors *DIRECT* their own fucking movies & just stay out of their way. It's kind of tragic to think about.
Weinstein was the worst about doing that. Just ask the makers behind The Crow City of Angels for what they went through dealing with him and how he butchered the living hell out of that film.
I love this movie so much. It hurts to know that studios butchered the director's version. Mr. GoodBadFlicks, can you do an exploring for The Strangers. I would also love to see a Sidekicks one, especially Surf Ninjas. Can we also get 3 Ninjas ✌😎✌. Been seeing your videos for a very long time, and you never disappoint. Keep it up. Peace and much love man.
Just watched your video, 2 years ago I bought this book written by John Whitman based on the screenplay of Disturbing Behavior. It holds all the scenes that you mentioned were cut, like Newberry explaining what happened with the four kids, Steve spying on one of Dr. Caldicott’s speeches at the school and the ending is Gavin dying, with Rachel, U.V. and Steve getting away, but there’s this girl named Shannon who was Steve’s sister’s friend... This girl is at a spelling bee and you can read that she’s got the flash in her eye. I heard there were different endings to the movie and I guess this was one of them. The book is pretty good, it sets the mood better than the movie and you can find it for fairly cheap, I believe. It’s only a 188 pages long and depicts Steve’s struggle with fitting in pretty well, you see he doesn’t really want to be friends with Gavin, but he feels he doesn’t relate to the Blue Ribbons, and he considers himself a “jock” like them. The whole thing feels so very different from the movie. In the movie you don’t really feel much for the characters, you feel like you’re not understanding what’s happening properly, but the book makes it clear and I appreciate that. Just thought I’d write this, in case you or anyone would like to buy it. I don’t know if it contains the unreleased scenes, maybe it does, I haven’t thought of comparing the two. I have a hunch it might, there are things from the book I can’t say I recall in the movie, like Steve finding files, him going to Caldicott for a consultation, Steve going on a field trip to the hospital where they go to the morgue and so much more. Since there’s so much of it, I feel John Whitman added all that to make it more coherent, but I don’t know.
SO glad you decided to do this one! :D It was an interesting watch and it felt different from other movies in certain aspects. Certainly a very different kind of horror movie
Hearing of this review, pisses me off in that the studio didn't even allow director David Nutter to put both cuts on the Blu-ray version? The studio's theatrical cut and his director's cut. Incompetence like this is makes you wonder who are all these idiots who make these crappy decisions and why do they wield they power they have, so stupidly??!
Got to say, this Adpocalypse really has had some benefits for us casual viewers, it's made our fave uploaders (such as yourself) post more frequent videos for us to watch, so at least there's a silver lining lol Maybe one day I will get that "Amazing Bulk" review from you that I've been itching to see :)
Goddamn idiot executives, cutting material from the film that originally enhanced it. Now the deleted footage looks poorly and badly needs restoration. Something of course which cost lots and lots of money! Seriously if i were nutter i'd have told the studio to go f-'em themselves up the ass. Hearing of David Nutter's treatment by the studio, makes me appreciate George Lucas, Lucas being his own man as an example here. Setting up Lucasfilm back in the day. Who previously owns his own movies/Studio and didn't answer to the Hollywood studio's flawed system! Have known about the "Disturbing Behavior" deleted scenes, for years but the DVD was very hard to come by, back in the day on 'Region 1'. This review has me wanting to order the updated Blu-ray version now, so well done and thank you. Excellent review!
I liked this film, and that song on the film's soundtrack by The Flys too, but "Cease Fire"? Wow, now I know why in "Miami Vice" Don Johnson wearing a war helmet at certain times felt so familiar, it was the cover of that dang film I totally forgot about for 30 years!
wow I loved this film as a teen, I remember having it on vhs. I always tried to dress like Rachel haha what a throwback.. This was so interesting I never even knew all those scenes were cut out or that the ending was changed, I guess I need to find the dvd now
One of my favorite films, and the one that introduced me to Michelle Skalnik, who is my all-time biggest crush. It was heartbreaking when I read she passed away in 2004. Getting back to the film itself, I've messaged Arrow Video encouraging them to release this, preferably the director's cut if possible. The more people who message them, the more likely it'll be.
I just saw Disturbing Behavior. I'd have loved to see a sequel because it was so set up from Gavin surviving and possibly being a new recruiter for the Blue Ribbons. Also, movie producers and directors need to trust themselves more. Expositional dialog isn't always unnecessary and cringe. The janitor telling Steve the truth about the Blue Ribbons would have explained so much and made the audience feel closer to him.
I remember watching this on TV and they have added the deleted scenes onto the original movie with the exception of the original ending not shown. I wished that the director's cut was released and shown to this public. I love this movie.
I equate the studio's ending as one of the worst all time alongside the ending to Deadly Friend.I would've had that movie end with Swanson's character dying again in the lead guy's arms.
Yeah but the studio wanted to end on a "big scare". The original version of Deadly Friend is so much different than what we got. Craven was crushed by what they did. It was supposed to be more of a modern "Bride of Frankenstein".
@Wade Wilson sorry for the late response I will definitely look for it online and if you ever finish what you said you started to do with an upscaling copy let me know I would be interested to purchase.
Thanks for this! In spite of all the studio's twitchy second-guessing, I remember enjoying this when it came out and adopting it as a bit of a guilty pleasure. Somehow this backstory has me thinking Footloose on Steroids, another community clamping down on its kids while overreacting to a tragedy. I'm a Bruce Greenwood fan and I appreciate how he can sell the line "Science is God!" with conviction. I would like to have seen Dr. Caldecott as part of a larger scheme, a nice reversal on Greenwood having starred in the cult classic paranoia show "Nowhere Man." Also, a damn shame about Nick Stahl, who has had personal issues. He's gifted and I'd like to see more of him again.
I was a teen in the mid 's and I remember really enjoying this an how it fit in that era of Scream and Buddy the vampire slayer, teens dealing with horror and confcomfort.I distinctly remember the Harvey Danger song "Flagpole sitta" in relation to this song. "Im not sick but Im not well, but its okay, its all fine BC Im alright, Im in hell" oh 90's Angst. ❤
Can you do a video like this one time where you end the video saying "and guess what? You can get the Director's Cut right now!". This is like the 20th time I've heard about another brilliant film killed by studio interference.
