In this video, we are taking you to a place on the island that will make you wonder 'why don't people visit here in Sri Lanka?' As much as they should at least! A beautiful location called Gal Oya, a low land, dry zone region that is flanked by mountains ripe for hiking and surprisingly lush! The area is home to the first inhabitant Veddah tribes of Sri Lanka that moved from Danigala to Gal Oya during the construction of the Senanayake Samudraya.
It's also the ONLY place in Sri Lanka where you can witness the swimming elephants among other unique wildlife!

I have history in Gal Oya. My maternal grandfather worked in the Gal Oya project after his return from Singapore in the early 50s. He was living in Ampara at the time of his death in 1963. (His wife and children were living in Jaffna. He would come home every few weeks to visit them. He was quite a strict man I’m told. I’m sure they didn’t mind him being away 😝). Beautiful place. Your vlog captured the essence of it. I have to put it on my bucket list. Thank you.

oh wow Sheneller!! What a beautiful vlog ❤️ I've never been there and I've never met or seen anyone from the Veddah community yet in my life. The thought that this beautiful and ancient community is disappearing because they don't get much help, well that's a pretty sad thing! As an island of people very proud to being Srilankans, we should all be eve proud to have the Veddah community and help them instead of canceling them just because they are not modern enough in this world 😔 Anyway thank you guys to bring to light such things to everyone 💪🏽 Keep up the awesome work as always!

I used to have a really old anthropology book that was about every ethnic group of india and sri lanka with photos very interesting. British were obsessed with hair type nose shape skin colour eyes ect and documented many tribes over 100 yrs ago. Not anything if culture and customs though that us the really interesting and enlightening part.

People dont go to see Gal Oya Elephants because they are the most aggressive elephants in Sri Lanka. Gal Oya elephants seems to be like a different breed of Sri Lankan elephants. Also the area is more of forest than planes. So its more harder to spot elephants. Most People go to Minneriya and Udawalawa to see Elephants. 'The Gathering' Largest Wild Asian Elephant gathering Happens at Minneriya.

Thanks Shehan and Sheneller for this beautiful travel video. I'm Gamini from Galgamuwa and never forget to watch these travel episodes uploaded on your RU-vid channel.. They're providing us a better guidance. Actually, there are many more interesting places located off the beaten track in the island to visit and this (Gal oya area) is one of them.
